7 Days of Outfits: Coats Included

I’m trying out a little something new this week… I’m including my complete outfits. I spend a lot of time during the fall and winter months wearing jackets and coats. I don’t have an office or someplace that I go where I take my coat off. I am usually in my coats for a large part of the day because I am taking my kids to and fro, and we’re parking and walking a few blocks to get to our destination. That usually means my complete outfit or ‘look’ involves a coat. And because I like to see how others keep warm and dry, (and stylish!) this week I’m going to show you how I do it.

On a side note, I found the best lipstick of my life in Las Vegas. I’ve worn it everyday since I bought it, including in all the photos below!

MONDAY:

Vina Turtleneck Sweater, c/o SiiZU | BF Jeans, c/o Everlane | Isa Boot, c/o  Nisolo | Short Puffer, c/o Everlane

I think I need to start something called ‘sweater-Monday’ because it just makes the day a little better. At the beginning of the week I need extra coziness and comfort to help me rock through the day. I’m sporting these pretty boots from Nisolo, in an attempt to not live in a black and gray world (which often happens this time of year!). So far, these boots have been really easy to wear and I love how they look with black. However, I got together with a dear friend of mine over the weekend, and she was wearing the same boots in brandy, and I loved those too!

This short puffer from Everlane is a nice option when I don’t feel like donning a full-body coat. I’m going to wear it some more and then hopefully do a review in December. It moves nicely and doesn’t make me feel saddled down, which I like. But it is bulky and ‘swishy.’ However, the traits mean it’s warm and pretty darn rain/wind proof. I opted for a size small in the jacket and it fits well through the torso, but is a smidge short in the arms. If I were to re-order, I’d consider a medium.

Let’s talk lipstick. When I was in Las Vegas, with time to kill while Mr. Seasons was working, I wandered the strip looking for souvenirs for my kiddos. I happened upon a Sephora, and naturally I decided to browse the lipsticks, a luxury not usually afforded to me because my 3 1/2 year old little boy is usually in tow. After trying on several colors from my go-to brands (Bite and Nars) without success, the sales lady brought me one of the prettiest lipsticks I’d ever tried on. Both in the color and the case. It’s by Hourglass, which is a brand that’s new to me. The formula is creamy, but long-wearing. What’s really cool about this lipstick, is that you can actually buy refills, and reuse the external housing! But that’s not why I love it. I’m smitten over the color, which is absolutely perfect for me. Sephora was out of stock online (‘If Only’ is the shade), but I found it at Nordstrom ($34) and you can still buy refills at Sephora ($22). I can’t recommend this lipstick enough!

Style Notes: Not the most exciting ensemble, but it served me well. I was warm and comfortable.

Style Score: 8

TUESDAY:

Camel Sweater, Everlane | Sailor Pant, Jesse Kamm | Tirhas Saddlebag, c/o ABLE | Isa Boot, c/o  Nisolo |  Short Puffer, c/o Everlane

I don’t know why it took me so long to pair this sweater with these pants, but I love the palette going on here. Tan, navy, brown = all the heart eyes. It definitely got less sexy when I added the black coat, but I honestly don’t know what else I would have worn. I feel like late fall and winter equals a steady diet of hiding under black coats. Not sure what to do about that. But I really like this shorty coat paired with these pants. Many of my other coats feel ‘off’ with these pants, and the cropped coat is a better match.

Style Notes: I’m not sure I’m sold on boots with these pants.  The boots were great to keep me warm (it was in the low 40’s), but I think the pants look best with mules, clogs and sandals. But I plan to run through the options this fall and see what else I can make them work with.

Style Score: 9

WEDNESDAY:

Cardigan, Zady, no longer available (similar) | Rose Top, c/o Belvele | Jeans, Rag & Bone  | Chelsea Boots, Everlane | Tirhas Saddlebag, c/o ABLE | Down With It Parka (M), Patagonia (currently 20% off!)

I was craving warm tones today so I grabbed my most pumpkin-y closet item and paired it with my cozy, trusty alpaca cardigan. I’m surprised how much I liked the result! This shirt is textured and on the thicker side, so it was easy to stay warm and comfortable.

This parka is my go-to when I need to enter beast mode to stay warm. I bought it on sale at the end of last winter, so I still haven’t worn it a ton yet. It’s very warm, and while it’s puffy, it’s not too poofy, if that makes sense? I feel slightly less ‘walking sleeping bag’ than I think I would in the long puffer by Everlane, but the trade off is less rain/wind resistance.

Style Notes:  I am a big fan of the two color palettes going on here. In the first photo, the pumpkin spices up the black and charcoal (see what I did there?) and in the second, the burgundy bag is a nice pop agains the black coat and boots.

Style Score: 9

THURSDAY:

Rip Scoop Neck Top, c/o Michael Stars (this color sold out, love the olive version)  | Denim Jumpsuit, REIFhaus | Clogs, No.6

Clearly I have a thing for warm tones this week. Today there was no school, so we were mostly hanging around the house, which meant I could take liberties with my wardrobe (aka, I didn’t have to be paranoid about staying warm). I really like this outfit. It was so comfortable, and I always feel totally cool in this jumpsuit. I just have to watch out for food babies so I don’t look like I am expecting.

Style Score: 10!

FRIDAY:

Cardigan, c/o Grana | Striped Top, thrifted (similar) |  Jeans, Rag & Bone  | Chelsea Boots, Everlane |  Bag, (similar, ethical option) | City Anorak, Everlane | Fan Necklace, c/o Loop (use code SEASONS10 to save 10%)

This cardigan is very under-utilized in my closet. It has kind of a big, boxy shape, so I often don’t know what to pair it with. But when I wear it, I’m always glad I did because it’s very soft and warm. I have been favoring cardigans over pullover sweaters this fall, (besides thinner sweaters, like cashmere) because I often warm up when I move about the house, cook dinner, etc., and it’s nice to be able to layer down.

This jacket is my go-to for rain. At first I didn’t like how boxy it is, but I find it very handy to layer over sweaters, or even a thinner jacket if it’s super cold. I particularly like how it looks when paired with this cozy, old wool scarf!

Style Notes: I think I’m settling into a groove of simple, cold-weather outfits. I like the cool navy/gray/black palette a lot but, when I look at these photos, the first one looks more ‘momish’ than I’d prefer. But hey, I guess that’s what I am!

Style Score: 8.5

SATURDAY:

White Turtleneck (M), Splendid | Fisherman Sweater, thrifted (similar on Etsy) | Denim, Vintage (really like this option) |  Isa Boot, c/o  Nisolo | Bag, (similar, ethical option) | Sunglasses, Ray Ban

Yes! Loved wearing this. Mixed warm neutrals, check. Cozy, flat boots, check. Cozy turtleneck, check. However, I don’t love the black bag with this outfit. But I’m not sure what would have been better. Any ideas? Maybe dark brown?

Style Score: 9

SUNDAY:

Scarf, Only Child | Sweater, Everlane | Denim, Vintage (really like this option) | Boots, c/o Everlane | Bag, Cuyana | City Anorak, Everlane

I was trying to channel a bit of French girl here. I know, me and every other blogger out there. But I love the inspiration that plays around in my mind when I think about what a chic woman traipsing around Paris might wear. Chic and simple are two things I always strive for, and it seems to be a common trait amongst French women (or at least that’s what the Internet tells me). I like how it turned out, but I still don’t feel at home in neck scarves. I’m going to keep trying because I love the way scarves look. I spent the entire day in these boots and I’m surprised how good they felt! However, I was off mom-duty for a big chunk of the day, so that’s probably a factor too.

Style Notes: I wanted to contrast my faded vintage jeans so I paired them with black, suede boots. I added the rust scarf for a dash of color in a sea of black, and am really happy with the results.

Style Score: 10

FAVORITES: Thursday + Sunday

KEY LESSONS: I’m scared to wear all black. I love it on others, but it seems like it would bore me to tears. Maybe I’ll try it next week just to see.

  1. Can we talk about the jumpsuit? I have a black linen jumpsuit – very similar to your Reifhaus one but bought from an Etsy shop called OffOn.

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/504321084/linen-jumpsuit-sleeveless-jumpsuit-women?ref=shop_home_active_80

I wore it a lot this summer and fall (to my surprise and joy, as every single person in my life discouraged me from buying a jumpsuit because I’m 5’10” and, as my sister put it, “jumpers are for babies.” She now also wants a jumpsuit, haha).

I’d like to extend its use as overalls in the winter, but (1) it’s linen (perhaps could be dealt with by wearing longjohns underneath?); and (2) it hits just above the ankle – like yours does – and I can’t very well leave my ankles out in the cold.
Do you have a creative way of extending the life of your jumpsuits through the winter? Or do you have a brand you’d recommend with a longer leg on the jumpsuit?

    1. It is harder to find a longer leg jumpsuit, especially for us tall gals! I suppose you could ask if any of these makers would make a jumpsuit with a longer inseam, but that could get pricey. I think part of the appeal of the look of a jumpsuit is showing that slice of ankle. I try make mine warmer by layering a thin sweater underneath and adding ankle boots or high top cons, which show less of the ankle area. And yes, since yours is linen, you might need to wear leggings underneath. Or consider a jumpsuit made from denim or another thicker material.

  2. I love the addition of jackets to your outfit styling. It can change the look of an outfit so much, so it’s awesome to see how you’re doing it. When I’m out and about in the cold/wet I still want to look like I tried!
I actually really like how the boots look with your Kamm pants in the pics, but I agree that warm shoes with them can be a struggle. I’ve found a little bit of a heel on booties pairs pretty well. I’m worried my lower legs will get cold with the wide legs when real winter comes, but I’ll be experimenting with thin knee high wool socks and see if that helps!

    1. Hi Bev, the thick canvas of the Kamm pants in surprisingly warm! I’ve played around with knee socks to help out on chillier days, and it does. Great idea about the healed boot!

  3. Great week! I am loving the extra bits of color! I think Saturday was my fav from the bunch, thank you for sharing! I wonder if you would ever share a post about caring for your leather boots? I know.. not very glamorous. The brown and black boots you are wearing are so cute! But I am always afraid to get something like that, at the risk of water and snow and salt damage. Does just using a protective spray prevent the damage, or do you not wear them in inclement weather? Thanks for all your posts, love reading!

    1. I have so many thoughts on this, as I think about it constantly! I think a blog post is definitely in order. But really quickly, I say a few things: 1) we don’t use salt here, which helps, 2) I do spray them and I also use wax-based leather treatments 3) I add sole savers to the bottoms. Thanks for asking such a great question! I’ll try to fit a blog post in soon!!

  4. I’m glad I didn’t buy the everlane long puffer. It will definitely look too bulky on me. Love the rag & bone jeans!how high is the rise comparing to everlane? Does it have a lot of stretch? ( I had zero luck with Everlane jeans. In the beginning I kind of like the boyfriend fit but the v shape around the crotch drives me nuts)

    1. The Rag & Bone jeans are very stretchy! The high waist is about the same as the high waisted Everlane ones. I really, really like the Rag & Bone jeans, they are ultra comfy and do not stretch out (which is shocking!).

  5. That scarf is so cute on you! Of course I love the vintage cable-knit sweater, as always. I’m trying to get over my childhood fear/loathing of turtlenecks because they are so practial. I’ve had my eye on the Everlane BF jeans in black, but I have to say I don’t love the color in these photos – it seems like it’s been painted on. It could be the lighting. Or maybe I’m not into garment dye. One note about the all-black ensemble: I started wearing all black to work on Mondays as a “boo hoo it’s Monday” – but now I really like it! In a business casual environment it can actually look quite polished and pulled together. Of course you can take it wild with accessories, but I don’t usually have the energy or presence of mind to do that Monday morning. :)

    1. I love your black Monday, great idea! Agreed, all black is a great look for feeling polished. Anytime I want to feel that way I opt for lots of black. The black on the Everlane jeans is a true black, so they aren’t like black denim, which can look sort of faded. Hope that is helpful.

  6. One thought on the neck kerchief–try tying it to your bag! A nonfunctional scarf around my neck makes me so self conscious but looping a scarf around the strap of a bag where it meets the bag feels more natural.

  7. Tuesday and Saturday are my favorites! I keep seeing the Everlane anorak around and I’m really on the fence about it. I need a good rain jacket and I get overheated with coats so easily I feel like this would be a good light option. Do you have it in a small? I read it’s oversized so I don’t want to order too big and be swimming in it,

    1. I really, really like the anorak! I was unsure last season when I got it, but I have been wearing it a ton this fall. It’s roomy, so it’s super easy to layer. And it is very lightweight, I definitely don’t think you’d overheat in it! I am wearing it in a size Small.

  8. Loving these looks! You’re giving me fall-envy big time. I love boots and sweaters, but I’m currently wearing shorts, a tank and Birks. I think My fav is Wednesday bc it looks so cozy and stylish.

  9. I would be curious to know how the Everlane boss boot compares to the heel boot in terms of comfort! I think I remember you styling the heel boot a while back, not sure if you kept them or not. But I’m in the market for a pair of black heeled boots and a pair of black flat boots, and for the heeled ones I’m trying to decide between Everlane’s two options and Nisolo’s Dari boot.

    1. Hey Emily! Here are my observations. 1 – I think the Dari boots are super cute. But the heel is higher than the Everlane ones, so I am worried how that would affect comfort. My friend Ellie (selflesslystyled.com) has them and wears them all the time. 2 – I still have my Modern Heel boots, but they pinch my toes a bit. I am gonna give them one more season to break in. 3 – The Boss Boot is more comfortable than the Modern Heel boot for me because it doesn’t squeeze my fit. The shape is just more accommodating for my feet. Hope that helps!

  10. Thanks so much, I appreciate it!! Also I love how the Isa boots paired with your Kamm pants and cashmere sweater. Serious outfit goals right there. You always look so good. 👌🏼

  11. Since you’ve found the perfect lipstick, and I agree it looks great on you, I suggest you by 2 refills immediately before they discontinue the color!

  12. Loved this post Andrea! It’s great to see what you wear underneath your puffer jackets. I find putting together winter outfits the trickiest of all the seasons. I’m really in love with the long Everlane puffer but it was great to see how the shorter one looks on.

  13. I love the long puffa and anorak coats. It’s funny how the long down coat is bigger than the first short one yet looks sleeker and less bulky overall. There is something about the pocket placement on the short puffa that looks off/ adds visual bulk.

Love your lipstick and Hourglass do beautiful powder palette

  14. Every time I wear my wide leg cropped pants, I get my foot caught in them at some point in the day! This happens to me in maxi skirts too. I suspect I am especially clumsy–which, does serve a purpose–it keeps my students awake (since there’s always a chance I trip over something–usually, myself). Anyway, I’m impressed you can wear them!!!

I’m SWOONING over that Irish knit cardigan too.

  15. Gah! I’m loving ALL of these looks! Also making me rethink which color of the Isa boot would be best — that light oak is the bomb!
