Mid Layers for Fall + Winter With Only Child *discount code included!*

Only Child Cardiff Coat

For many of us, fall = dressing in layers. A welcome change after a summer of simple outfits. And I dare say the ‘mid-layer’ is my favorite outfit variable. You can easily shape or affect an entire outfit with this one item. A mid-layer is anything from a cardigan to a blazer, to a chore jacket or duster. The possibilities are endless. But today’s post is all about two specific mid-layers by Only Child.

This post is in partnership with Only Child. This means, if you make a purchase using the discount code featured in this post, Seasons + Salt will make a commission. Thank you so much for supporting the brands I choose to work with and this blog!

Let’s get right to it! Very first up for discussion: the Cardiff Coat in Midweight Wool.

If you’ve been around Seasons + Salt for a while you probably know that I’ve styled a few iterations of this coat over the past few years. And this one is my favorite to date. It’s light, agile, and easy in a way that makes me want to wear it every day.

SPECS: The Cardiff Coat is made with a midweight wool blend fabric and features a slightly cropped length and full-length sleeves with a slight taper. The cropped length was a big reason I was drawn to this style. The shape feels fresh and easy to wear with lots of items! The Cardiff Coat also features a shawl collar (a great look for broad shoulders) and big pockets.

HOW I’M STYLING IT: I would say this coat lands somewhere between a blazer and a cardigan. It’s not as structured or formal-feeling as a blazer, which makes it feel like it’s appropriate to wear for nearly any day-to-day occasion. And, it’s a little more polished than a cardigan so it’s perfect for giving an everyday outfit a little boost. I’ve been wearing mine with blue jeans and black jeans, over sweaters and t-shirts.

WINTERIZE IT: On Only Child’s website, the Cardiff Coat is described as a light winter or fall and spring jacket, or as I like to call them in Oregon, a mid-layer. :) I describe it as ‘mid’ because if it’s cold or rainy I wear a bigger jacket over it. Thankfully the wool blend fabric is soft and easy to throw a rain jacket or puffer on top of. The Cardiff is unlined, so you’ll definitely want long sleeves under it if you’re sensitive to wool or plan to be out in chilly temperatures.

Next up: the Penny Chore Coat in Cotton Canvas. I wish I could show you guys this fabric super up close. It’s a beautiful, warm, off-white color with flecks in the fabric. (Perfect for hiding spots if you get it dirty!)

I really like this one so far. But that is no surprise to me because I’ve been eyeing it from afar for a few seasons. I love the four-pocket design and brass buttons. I am also a fan of the stiff collar and the A-shape of the jacket (it subtly falls away from the body).

SPECS: The Penny Chore Coat features heavy(ish) weight cotton canvas and is generous in size and shape. I took my true size to make sure I could wear sweaters underneath. It hits about mid-thigh or lower and has a back vent for easy movement.

HOW I’M STYLING IT: I like to wear mine with jeans of all the shapes. The semi-long line shape of the jacket makes it complementary to all denim shapes, fitted and loose. The Penny Chore Coat is a really easy topper to wear with most outfits. I think it would even be cute over dresses in the spring.

WINTERIZE IT: This is where things get slightly trickier. This coat is decidedly a fall/spring coat in my opinion. But on a light winter day, you could wear a thick sweater underneath and a Lenny Kravitz-style scarf on top and you might be okay. Or, if you’re like me and have a few oversized winter coats, you can layer one on top. I like to call these ‘jacket sandwiches.’

  1. These coats/jackets are so cute! I love the colors and sure they will work later in early Spring too.

    Did you cut your hair?😍cute

  2. I have been eyeing the Penny Chore Coat for awhile now, but was confused by the sizing. Their online reviews show customers saying they got a S/M or a M/L, but when ordering it only shows options XS, S, M, etc.

I was wondering if you could discuss the sizing a little more. I see you said you got a Medium for layering purposes. Do you think a Small would’ve been too tight? Or people on the cusp could do either/or with sizing?

Apologies for the lengthy comment! Just looking for some more sizing info before making a large purchase like this. Thank you for this post and sharing your thoughts!

    1. Hi Katie, I believe that is from when they used to have combined sizing. I am on the cusp between S and M per the size chart. I think a small could have worked, but it might be too tight on my shoulders, or make it so I couldn’t layer underneath. I hope that helps a little. Did you compare your measurements to the size chart?
