It’s been hot, hot, hot around these parts and all I want to do is wear whatever I can to stay cool. Pulling together an outfit AND staying cool is a tall order, but I think it can be done! I decided to take on the challenge and create a ‘heat wave’ capsule wardrobe out of my closet favorites and a few pieces I picked up this summer.
The capsule is pretty small (because the hot weather run is pretty short here), but I tried to pick pieces that would maximize versatility/outfit combinations. That meant building a color palette that expands just beyond my love for neutrals, choosing items with interesting shape, and including shoes that are very different from each other.
The number one criteria for any item I added was that it had to be comfortable in the heat.
(Feel free to click on any of the images below for more details.)
These are the exact items I chose with the exception of the dress, the jumpsuit and the white button up. My dress is older and not available, and I decided to include a different but similar jumpsuit that you will see in the outfit photos down below!
A note on Everlane: a few items linked above are from Everlane, but I will include alternatives below if you are currently choosing not to shop there. I tried really hard to include other brands with this capsule, but I have many Everlane items in my closet that I love to wear so I included them. I am currently taking a break from paid partnerships with Everlane. I have long championed the brand, but I am hoping to see some more response from the leadership over recent racist allegations made by the ex.wives.club.
To make sure these items would work in a true capsule I took the time to brainstorm more than a dozen outfit ideas and then painstakingly tried them on and photographed them. For as much as I love clothes and building outfits, I despise actually trying things on! It’s a weird quirk of mine. BUT I thought it would be really important to show how these items all work together! I also plan to use this as a quick reference guide for myself when getting dressed during the hottest days of summer. (In fact I am wearing outfit #1 as I write this!) Brainstorming outfits ahead of time is a great way to save time getting dressed in the morning. Think about a vacation where you have all your outfits pre-picked and getting dressed is a snap. Brainstorming ahead of time can help avoid the mind-going-blank moment when trying to decide what to wear.
Alright, enough talk, let’s take a look at the outfits. All the items are linked above, while jewelry, a few alternate items, and a few discounts are listed below.

A classic combo of fitted top and loose shorts. The tie adds an element of interest that makes the whole thing feel like a complete outfit.

I love the contrast of the sporty sandals and the skirt. This skirt is a little bit on the thicker side, but the away-from-the-body fit helps it from feeling too hot.

I shared all about these jean shorts on Instagram the other day. They are a summer hit for me. I like them because the fit is relaxed (I’m wearing my true size), which means there is tons of air flow and they are comfortable for all-day wear! The slightly longer inseam makes me very happy too.

Earrings, c/o
This shirt is a major favorite of mine because it’s linen. I love the breathability and the cute buttons. The earrings were gifted from Portland jewelry maker Whisky + Wine.

I never thought I’d be into such a colorful ensemble, but I love it! This shirt is ultra lightweight so it’s great for the heat.

The jean shorts = relaxed, the top and shoes = pulled-together.

This outfit was definitely inspired by Pinterest. I am a huge fan of upstyled basics. I linked a similar shirt in the collage above. This exact one is c/o Power of My People.

This is an outfit I never would have thought to style outside of this capsule, but I love it! The earrings make for an excellent ‘third piece.’

A pair of good jean shorts just makes me so happy, and I love the way they look with all my favorite white tops. This linen tank has been a staple for me since last summer, I love the breathable fabric and clean lines. I ‘upstyled’ it a bit with a few extra pieces of jewelry.

A heat wave capsule isn’t complete without a breezy, summer dress! This one is a few years old from Pyne & Smith, I highly recommend their dresses!

Lakeside Jumpsuit, c/o
Last, but not least, this easy, breezy jumpsuit!! I also own the Everlane one linked above, but wanted to give this soft, jersey one some love. It totally feels like pajamas. In fact, I wore it yesterday and thought about keeping it on to go to bed. (Was worried I’d get too hot.) I am wearing a size Medium, which is sold out in this color, but there are several other beautiful shades!
I’m looking forward to wearing these outfits over the coming weeks. Even though we are at home pretty much constantly, having a fresh outfit makes me feel really good. Between exercising, eating a better balance of food, and getting dressed, I am feeling a lot better than I was at the beginning of quarantine. There are so many things outside my control right now that it feels good to have a few things I can take ownership over.
