A Fresh Option for Wide Leg Pants + More

Today’s post is a slight departure from my 99 Days of Summer Style series (though you can catch today’s outfit at the end of the post).

I wanted to share some beautiful pieces from Curator – a soft cotton top and high waisted utility pants. This post is in partnership with Curator, which means the top and pants were gifted, and that there will be a discount code for readers in this post! I will receive a small commission from sales that use the discount code.

I’m super excited about both these pieces, and I love, love that they are garment dyed, which means I can wear them together and they almost read like a jumpsuit. I’m hoping the pants will fill a hole in my closet and the shirt, with it’s vintage vibes, is already a favorite of mine.

The Painter Pant.

Let’s start with the pants. I’ve been curious about the Painter Pant ever since I saw Brianna (of the Constant Closet) rocking them on Instagram. I was curious about them as a fresh option for wide leg pants in my closet.

I own a few pairs of Kamm pants, which I used to LOVE, but for the last few months I can’t seem to be bothered by the discomfort factor when wearing them. On my leanest days they don’t feel bad, but on any days subject to a slight weight fluctuation, they are not my friends. I haven’t sealed the deal by selling them yet, but I’m close. This of course leaves a hole in my closet for wide leg pants that I can wear year round. I am a big fan of the wide leg chinos from Everlane, but they are a decidedly warm-weather item. The fabric is much too light (and too cropped on me!) to stand up to an Oregon winter. Naturally, I’ve been on the prowl.

So far I really like these pants as an alternative option. They have a wonderfully high waist, and a nice, loose leg. They have a more relaxed fit than my Kamms – there is more room through the thigh – and the fabric is much softer. They are more of a utility shape than a wide leg, and I love that because it feels so fresh, along with the hammer hang reminiscent of carpenter pants of the 1990’s.

When styling these pants I tried a few different ways: full length with heels, full length with flats, and then cuffed. I like the pants at both inseams, so I am not committing to cropping anything just yet. I have the best luck with cropping pants after I’ve worn them for a bit because my decision is more educated.

These pants are made from 100% cotton twill, and come in XXXS-XL, in six colors: Copper (pictured), Natural, Mud, Evergreen, Scarlet and Dijon.

I am wearing the size small. Per the website’s size chart these pants have a 30″ inseam, a 13″ rise, they measure 31″ through the waist and 41″ through the hips. For reference I am 5’7 and I usually wear a 6 or a 28 in pants, and these pants fit me very comfortably. The Painter Pant is made in San Francisco at a local, family-owned factory.

I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight the price of these pants – $154, and that’s before my 15% discount code – which brings them down to $130.90. You can enter ‘ANDREA15’ at checkout to take 15% off any order at Curator through Wednesday (6/26).

The Holly Boatneck.

In the world of ethical fashion and small makers, Curator stands out to me because they make styles I don’t often see. This shirt, made out of soft cotton jersey, is a prime example. In a sea of boxy, structured tops this soft knit is exactly what I need. And it’s a great compliment to my wide leg pants (as seen yesterday). The Saffron Vest and the Claire Top are also great examples of how Curator carves their own style path rather than following ethical fashion status quo.

I love the Holly Boatneck for a few reasons. The aforementioned soft fabric (which has a slight texture if you look closely). The waist band makes it easy to tuck into high waisted pants and makes it look equally polished when worn untucked with mid or lower rise bottoms.

In the winter months these types of shirts are often my staples because they work so well with chunky cardigans and wide leg pants. This means I will be using my very own discount code to add one more to my closet – I’m still debating between Mushroom and Dusty Lilac. The top also comes in Mud, Black and Copper (pictured in this post),

The Holly Boatneck features a namesake neckline and 3/4 sleeves. I am wearing a small, and it has a nice fitted feel without being too clingy. Just like the pants, the top is made in San Francisco.

The retail price is $56 before the 15% discount, which brings it down to $47.60 (use the code ‘ANDREA15’ at checkout).

STYLING

I really like the idea of wearing these two pieces together, mostly because I am big into monochromatic dressing (I find the simplicity enticing). In the intro photos to this post I styled these pieces with heels, and here I am trying them out with flat sandals, which is definitely what I wear most often. I think this look would be great in the winter with white sneakers and a cozy, cream colored wool cardigan on top.

For warmer weather you could easily pair this top with shorts, or even tucked into a skirt. The slim fit could also work well for layering under jumpsuits.

For warmer weather it would also work well to cuff the pants and wear them with a tank top. I love how these pants make this very old white undershirt tank top into an instant outfit. One that I could travel and move around in all day and be comfortable.

  1. The cupper color is wonderful.
Seeing these warm colors more and more on instagram and on blogs like yours is really touching me.
I’m a autumn type according to color me beautiful but I have abandoned these colors a couple of years ago.
I was going through a rough periode in my life and just wanted to hide in navy, grey and black.
Now that my life is back on track I feel more and more attracted to my own autumn colors again.
I’m reintegrating them again so I love all the warm tones they use at Curator.
I have already contacted them and will def visit them next year.
One question: the Holly Boatneck does it have a real body hugging fit or is there some space left?
I know that I cann’t show off something very close to my body so a somewhat relaxed fit would be better for me ;-)

    1. That’s so interesting Martine! I’m so glad you’re in a better place now. It’s so interesting how our clothes can impact us so much, and also be used as a refuge, a shield, or a source of communication.
I’m so glad you’ve put them on your list for your trip!! I would love the chance to visit them in person. On the Holly Boatneck, I am wearing a small, I think if I had taken my normal size medium it would be a bit looser on me. Overall it IS a slim cut though.

  2. Any suggestions for non-high-waist wide leg pants? I have been on the hunt for wide leg pants and since I am short waisted high rise are a no go and it seems that wide legs seems to go exclusively with high waists.

    1. Hmm, great question! Everlane’s first take on wide leg pants, the wide leg crops (not the chinos) were not high waisted enough for me, I found them to be lower than I liked, maybe those would work? Also, I have a pair of white wide leg jeans that I cropped from Able, and those fit just above a mid-rise on me.

  3. Seeing that the rise is 13″ fills me with hope. I had to let go of a lot of pants because the rise was just too short on me. Maybe I’ll save up for a pair of these.

  4. I love these pants so much and can’t wait to try them! Oh, and I just ordered some of those Mohinder sandals. I’m curious how you like yours and if they break in well. I’ve determined I just can’t wear heels for anything more than a quick dinner or something where I don’t have to stand or walk much!

    1. I hear ya! Heels are hard for me too!! I rarely wear them. The Mohinders were a BEAR to break in, but they are GREAT everyday shoes!!

  5. Long time since I have left you a comment….but I still read regularly! I love a 13 inch rise and that color is awesome! I have been on the hunt for a wide leg pant in a heavy material that will take me into fall. Do you think we will see full length, wide legged pants more this fall? I could never figure out how to make the wide leg crops and boots work for me. …..looks great on you and others, but I never could make it look right on myself! Ha! What about denim trends for the fall? Any thoughts? I have enjoyed your 99 summer outfits series, too. Take care!

    1. Hi Rebecca! Always so good to hear from you! I’m thrilled that you still read the blog. I do think we will see full length jeans in the fall, I don’t know about wide, but definitely flare and bootcut. But as with most trends, I think it will take maybe another year or more before it’s super mainstream. It’s always interesting to watch this stuff unfold, but I also think you should focus more on wearing what you love, and what works for you. If you like longer, wider cut jeans, I bet you would rock them!

  6. I have these pants! They are super comfy…

Regarding the Kamm pants- I was having the same issue then decided to size up. The size up is a little looser on my days when I feel thin but comfortable all day any and every day. I recently wore them for a day of traveling and feel like I have now thoroughly tested this theory :)

  7. So much more flattering than Kamm pants. A a more reasonable price. Thanks for posting.
