What I Wore: Spring Layers + Hourglass Shapes

This week I had some unexpected favorite looks, including one with slim-fit bottoms. I’m getting more comfortable with spring layers, and styling myself in general. I think feeling settled in your wardrobe is a good thing (and definitely not indicative of a rut). More on that below…

MONDAY:

Cardigan (M/L) Cuyana | The Friend (S), c/o Power of My People (use code SEASONS&SALT20 to take 20% off your order) Valid through 5/25 | Pants (6/M), Jesse Kamm | Clogs, No.6 (similar) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Sunglasses, Ray-Ban

Mondays are often my least-inspired days to get dressed. I think it’s a form of subliminal protest for leaving the weekend behind. Today was better though. I’ve been having a lot of fun with this top from Power of My People, which has the best shirttails and pockets. If you’re interested in more styling inspiration, navigate to my Instagram ‘highlights.’

Style Notes: I built this look around a color palette and shapes I really enjoy: warm tones and wide legs. By now, you’ve seen these sort of looks many times on my blog. It’s starting to feel like a simple uniform for me to throw on each morning, one I’ve been repeating a lot. As I settle into my style, it’s easy to wonder if I’m in a ‘rut’ or a ‘bore.’ Paige wrote about this a week or so ago, and I really appreciate her wrestling through it. I certainly don’t feel bored (yet), but I am going to make sure I view this as a style ‘groove’ rather than a ‘rut.’ I feel as if I’ve hit my stride rather than feeling stuck in any way.

TUESDAY:

The Friend (S), c/o Power of My People (use code SEASONS&SALT20 to take 20% off your order) Valid through 5/25 | Cheeky Jean (27R), Everlane | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Woven Clogs, No.6 (love!) | Bracelets: Able + c/o Moulton

Style Notes: This was unexpectedly my favorite look from the whole week. I absolutely loved this outfit! It felt like a modern take on a vintage look. The high waisted jeans plus the knotted top created an elegant shape, and I never felt so feminine in a simple shirt and jeans! The waist in these jeans has relaxed, and overall these Cheeky Straights feel way more comfortable than they first did. I’m very glad I sized down in them, and very glad I stuck it out when they were a little tight at first try-on.

Style Score: 10

WEDNESDAY:

Pima Micro Rib Scoop Neck Tee, Everlane | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter (from FW16) | Day Heel (10.5), Everlane | Leather Jacket (S), Reformation x Veda | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

Today we had a sweet Mommy + Me tea date at my son’s school, so I decided to dress up a little bit. I don’t know why, but those things always make me so emotional! Childhood is truly a blink. It didn’t feel that way when I had toddlers, but now that I have a child about to finish the 3rd grade, I realize it’s going frighteningly fast.

Style Notes: I wanted to go for dressy, but didn’t feel like fussing with a dress or bare legs, so I basically created a similar silhouette with this ballet-style top and wide leg pants. I am starting to like hour-glass outfits on myself more lately. Might be a reaction to a winter buried under sweaters and coats? I thought about wearing a cardigan to keep warm, but added the leather jacket at the last minute because I like how confident it makes me feel.

THURSDAY:

Claude Cardigan (S/M), L’envers | Alta Top in white linen, Only Child x Seasons + Salt (from last spring, same in oatmeal linen) | Dark Denim (28), Imogene + Willie | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Canvas Tote, old (similar) | Eloria Necklace, c/o Loop Jewelry (use code Seasons10 to save 10%)

Style Notes: This outfit is a little uninspired. But sometimes that’s just how it goes. I think it would have been more ‘me’ with vintage jeans instead of these dark wash ones.

Style Score: 8

FRIDAY:

Duster, c/o Vetta (similar) | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Dark Denim (28), Imogene + Willie | Sneakers (41), Veja | Day Market Tote, c/o Everlane | Eloria Necklace, c/o Loop Jewelry (use code Seasons10 to save 10%)

Wearing a trench and white sneakers together makes me feel like a total millennial. In fact, I skipped my little black backpack because I didn’t want to be too over the top. Did you know that millennials are on pace to outgrow Boomers as the largest living adult generation in the US? Are you a millennial? I am, but I’m definitely near the top of the age range. I am married to a Gen-X’er.

Style Notes: Even though I’m bordering on ‘costume-y’ with this look, I am still happy with it. I enjoy the look and feel of this trench, even though it’s not the most practical thing in my closet.

Style Score: 9

SATURDAY:

Jacket, very old (similar) | Crewneck Sweatshirt, Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Sneakers (41), Veja | Day Market Tote, c/o Everlane | Mirrored Sunglasses, c/o Zappos

My best soccer mom style. This sweatshirt was in the very first order I made from Everlane four years ago, I had barely heard of them, but was intrigued by what they were doing. It was the first time I took a calculated style risk, by way of ordering a fitted, cropped sweatshirt. Previously, my style risks had consisted of buying what was on sale. Who knew it would open up a whole new world for me. I like to hang on to this sweatshirt because it represents the catalyst of this journey I’ve been on – finding my style and discovering ethical fashion.

Style Notes: Super casual can be really hard for me, but I feel like I kinda nailed it here! Would definitely repeat this.

Style Score: 10

SUNDAY:

Cardigan no18 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Wide Leg Jumper, c/o Hackwith Design House | Woven Clogs, No.6 | Day Market Tote, c/o Everlane

I think I went through three outfit changes on this day, but here’s what I started out in. I opted for my HDH jumpsuit because it’s a little dressier than my REIFhaus ones, and I wanted to wear something nice for Mother’s Day. Later I threw on the latter jumpsuit + Birks for chasing my son around on his bike, but then got too hot. After that I entered no-woman’s land with a tank and shorts, because it truly was hot, and I needed to get some Vitamin D on my pale, winter skin.

Style Notes: Of the three looks, this one was my favorite. The jumpsuit is soft, flattering yet still loose. The shoes are fun, but still comfortable, and the chunky shape of the sweater is a bit unexpected. Special shoutout to @theconstantcloset for the cardigan inspiration! I didn’t realize that the fabulous Babaá knitwear made cotton sweaters! Extra points for this cardi because it has true dolman sleeves, making it very layer-able.

FAVORITES: Tuesday/Sunday

KEY LESSONS: If you’ve settled into some good routines with your wardrobe and how you’re putting together outfits, view it through the lens of a style groove, not a ‘rut’.

  1. I got super excited to see so many tens :) That Veta duster is so gorgeous! But maybe I love it because I’m a millennial ;)

  2. I love the Lauren Winter wide pants on you! It is super flattering and you have styled it so many ways.

    1. Thank you Divya! They felt so risky when I first bought them in fall ’16, but now I couldn’t imagine life without them. ;)

  3. I love Tuesday’s look! I just can’t seem to give up a fitted leg on my jeans :) And I am definitely in the toddler years that make every day seem like FOR-EV-ER. I try to remind myself to appreciate every day while the kids are young, but then I have days like today, when my son almost bit off his baby sister’s finger, bolted away from me in the grocery store parking lot and drew all over the kitchen floor with his crayons all before noon. HELP!

    1. Oh girl, that’s a DAY for sure. Hang in there, I swear you’re gonna blink and they’ll be in school. Also, I’m still wiping boogers off the wall, so some things never change. 🤣

  4. Sooo jealous of your Vetta duster! I love that you have figured out simple, classic styles that work for you. I sometimes have trouble staying focused when shopping for new clothes but your outfits look so put-together!

    1. Shopping often leaves me confused!! That’s why I rarely do it in person anymore. I try to only shop (online) with specific items in mind, otherwise I get sidetracked and confused about what I actually like. So thank you for the big compliment. :)

  5. You’re spring style has definitely come together! I’m a little jealous because I can’t quite seem to hit my stride…we keep jumping from winter to summer temps so I’m missing all the in between😂

What’s the secret to keeping a stride from turning into a rut?

    1. I know what you mean! It’s hard to find the inbetween, though sometimes 60 feels like winter after a day of high 80’s. I think the secret… well I don’t know. I just know I don’t feel bored at all, so I think that helps. Do you feel bored? Or do you worry your readers are bored? I started to worry that my readers were, but then realized I wasn’t, and that’s probably what’s more important…

  6. I love all of these! Especially the milenial outfit :)
You are convincing me to keep trying my shirts tied. I feel like there are only a couple of short where this works well and I always end up questioning if I’m being too fussy. Must not overthink it though because you do not look fussy at all. Happy to see your wide leg pants are back!

    1. I have found the tighter the knot, the less the fuss. But it can definitely feel fussy if there’s too much flesh exposed. Having enough fabric for knots (the top or bottom) is critical!

  7. That power of my people shirt is killer on you and I’m loving the fitted pants that aren’t skinnies.

    1. Yay, me too on the pants front. It’s just what I needed. It’s nice to not have sausage legs hahahahahaha

  8. Happy to see the HDH jumpsuit make an appearance on here! I purchased the same one last fall after seeing it on your blog and I LOOOVE it so much. I have worn it to a wedding, to work at least once a week, out with friends, to breakfast/lunch/dinner out, you name it … I’m definitely keeping an eye out when they put out new colors/fabrics since the shape works so well for me. Currently wearing it for a work day at my office with a black Jamie and the Jones blank canvas tee layered over top :) with a neck scarf and Everlane olive loafers.

    1. Yay, I love hearing this! I still love my jumpsuit! It’s such a great item. They released a light blue denim version this year, and I am trying to restrain myself!

Your outfit sounds like a dream!!!!

  9. Love all these looks! As a fellow No. 6 lover – and a size 10:) I’m wondering, did you get the new braided wedge in a 41 or 42?

    1. Hi Sara, I got them in a 42, which is what I have in the boots and Heidi woven clogs, but I think I could have gotten a 41. The leather is really soft and stretchy on the wedge clogs, so my foot has moved forward on the bed with wear and now there is extra space in the back.
