Tucked + Tied, A New Top For Spring

This probably isn’t the first time you’ve seen this shirt. And it won’t be the last.

I want to introduce you to the Friend – Wayward Fit shirt by Power of My People. This is not a sponsored post, but I will make a small commission if you make a purchase.

I’ve been wearing this shirt throughout the week, as a road test of sorts for this post. As you might know, texture and fabric play a huge part in whether I like an item, almost as much as style and shape. This shirt checks all the right boxes: silky linen (texture), oversized pockets (style), and feminine shape. But the feature that has impressed me the most is the staying power of this top. Power of My People first released it in Spring 2015, and it’s been going strong ever since.

As I brainstormed how I wanted to share this top with you guys, I decided the best way would be to showcase how I’m styling it: tucked and tied. But before we get to the outfits, lets dive into the details of this shirt.

SPECS:

FIT:

The Friend has a generous, oversized fit, with a slight nip at the waist. I am wearing a small, a size down from what I wear in most tops, for a relaxed (instead of oversized) fit. It is nice, and blousy, without being too overwhelming. It reminds me of the Courier shirt style by Madewell that I always loved, but never bought. The Friend is similar, but with better shirt tails.

FABRIC:

The Friend shirt is made with 3.5oz woven linen. It has a beautiful, drapey, almost silky quality to it. The fabric is a bit sheer, but the generous front pockets keep all things discreet. The color looks almost white in the photos, but it’s actually a soft cream, one of my favorite shades to wear. The fabric is on the softer, less crisp side of linen, with excellent texture.

Wrinkle Factor: Real talk here, if wrinkled shirts drive you nuts, then this one is not for you. It does wrinkle up throughout the day, but not enough to bother me. I like the texture-driven quality of linen. But if you don’t, stick to cotton.

UTILITY:

Pockets: I really like the big pockets in front. That is what initially drew me to the shirt. However, I was further impressed with them a few days ago when I headed outside to watch my kids ride bikes, wearing the top with my Kamm pants. If you’re familiar with Kamm pants you know the pocket situation is negligible, and suddenly I needed a place to put my phone and keys. Bingo, big front pockets to the rescue. It probably wasn’t the most attractive look, but it served me well for the 20 minutes I was walking around the block with my kids, hands free.

Boob Gap: There is no fear of the dreaded ‘boob gap’ with this design. The Friend features eight, close-together buttons, which keep the fabric nicely lined up.

Layering: Another surprise, these generous sleeves easily layer under the thinnest of cardigans! I expected them to be bunchy, but the fabric is soft and malleable enough that it is a non-issue.

STYLE:

I am a big, big fan when designers come up with a great style and stick with it. Every item doesn’t need to be reinvented every season. And that’s exactly what Power of My People has done with the Friend shirt. It might be cliche, but true style really does transcend time.

Pockets: Not only can they be utilitarian, but the pockets are what make the style of this shirt standout to me. They are oversized, and totally unexpected, taking this classic top from basic to elevated.

Shirt Tails: After the pockets, these are my second  favorite feature. They are long and curved, absolutely perfect for tucking in and tying.

HOW IT’S MADE:

STYLING:

TUCKED: I love a good tucked-in top for many reasons: it’s polished and it creates a great silhouette. I styled the Friend with my beloved Wide Pant because I knew the broad shoulders and wide legs would create a beautiful hour-glass shape. It’s a look made from basics that’s far from boring.

TIED: I’ll let you in on a little secret: tying is the lazy girl’s tuck. It produces a similar effect without the bunch. I’m head over heels for these shirt tails, and nearly every time I’ve worn this top, I’ve tied them. The higher-waisted the pants, the better.

  1. I’ve had the made well courier shirt for a while and pretty quickly became disenchanted with it. I decided to keep it and work with it anyways. Until now maybe… this shirt is a real dream.

    1. Interesting to hear Katie!! I found that in my last years of shopping at Madewell, the items never really felt ‘special’ in the same way that handcrafted items from smaller-run companies do. Once you step up the quality, it’s hard to go back!

  2. I have been looking at their shirt for a while now but the shipping fee is $17 to US unless you buy $200 or more…..I personally just hate to pay shipping lol. Also do you know if they charge any custom if shipping to us?

    1. Hi Jessie!

Jessica here from Power Of My People. Shipping a Friend shirt to the US costs $10CAD (about $7.80 USD), and you won’t get charged customs. Paying for shipping is a pain! But at least Andrea’s code will cover that cost + a little more for you ;)

  3. Love the shirt on you! What size are you wearing and how long is the code valid till?

  4. Thanks for this post! I’ve been looking for a business appropriate linen shirt and i think there Sister shirt is the winner for me! Plus, I also live in Vancouver, so that’s great for supporting a local brand! Thanks again – I’ve never heard of them before! (Ps. Love how you styled the top)
