Mini Capsule Challenge: Week 1 Outfit Recap

Untitled-1

Well, I am officially on day five of my mini capsule wardrobe challenge, aka wearing 20 items for 21 days. Here’s a little update of how it’s going so far.

The Good:
I am getting A LOT more use out my whole closet. Even with a slimmed down capsule wardrobe, it’s still REEAALLY easy for me to wear t-shirts 24/7. That is due in large part to the fact that most of my time is spent hustling kids around town. I keep thinking I’ll save my better outfits for ‘another time’ (that never materializes). With a 20 item wardrobe I gotta cycle through all that’s there. For example, I finally wore my Brass dress for the first time in months. It’s a shame I left that pretty thing neglected for so long.

The Bad:
Today as I was driving through one of my favorite parts of town I was struck with some sartorial inspiration, and then almost immediate I realized all the outfit ingredients that came to mind were outside my mini capsule. Creativity stifled. Hopefully I won’t feel this way too often during this experiment/challenge.

And The Outfits:

Winter Capsule MONDAY | flannel tunic / distressed denim (similar) / Vans (try these Fair Trade tennies)

Winter Capsule-2

TUESDAY (this outfit was such a winner! Loved it! And never would have done it without this little challenge!) | sweater, old / dress, Brass / shoes, Nisolo / necklace, c/o Natalie Borton

Winter Capsule-3WEDNESDAY | scarf, made by mom / shirt, Everlane / black denim, Paige / shoes, Vans (wish I had these) / bag, Madewell (ethical alternative)

Winter Capsule-4THURSDAY | sweater (similar) / black denim, Paige / chelsea rainboots, J.Crew via consignment shop / hat, old (hat goals)

Seasons+SaltFRIDAY | chambray top (similar)(this one is fab too) / stripes (similar) / denim, Paige / shoes, Frye (on sale!) / necklace, c/o Natalie Borton / lipstick (everyday fav!), Bite Beauty in Rosewood

How’s your 20 for 21 challenge going? Are you having fun or has it been hard?

Cheers to the weekend! Hope it’s a long one for you!

  1. You are rocking this challenge, girl! All the outfits you’ve put together are great, but my faves are Wednesday and Thursday. Happy weekend!

  2. Whoa, these are such strong outfits! The 20×21 is really working for you although I feel you on the inspiration on wearing things that aren’t in the capsule! I loooooove thursday’s outfit (not just because I’m a hat person!) those boots with the pants and sweater just works. I use to be the same about saving my “nice” clothes but I realized a while I never wore them so now I just go for it – what’s the point of having nice clothes to wear if they never get worn?
I really enjoyed seeing your first week, you are killing it!

  3. Lovin’ Monday and Thursday’s look. :-) Does this challenge make you feel you could get by with less in your capsule on a permanent basis, or will you be happy when you can go back to wearing all your other pieces? I have a much smaller wardrobe in the winter than the summer, simply because I don’t go out as much. My family could care less if I wear the same jeans/flannel/sweater/boots over and over! :-) I think I could easily do 20 items all winter long….not so much in the summer though.

    1. Yes Rebecca! I think my winter capsule could stand to be wayyy smaller. I am hoping my spring capsule will be leaner too, but transition seasons can be so tricky!

Yes in the winter I almost feel like what I wear doesn’t matter (so long as it’s warm) because it’s always under a coat!

  4. Hi Andrea, I’m new to your blog and I’m already hooked. I know your gray honeycomb sweater is an old Nordstrom Rack score, but I was hoping you could id the brand. It is literally the most perfect sweater for my Colorado winters and I would love to try and track it down to complete my Lent capsule wardrobe challenge that I am doing!

    1. Hi Ashley! Yes it’s totally from Nordstrom Rack about a year ago. It just says ‘Cardigan’ on the tag, I think it’s some sort of generic Nordstrom brand. :/ I’m sorry that I can’t be more helpful. On a side note the cardigan is pretty light weight, and so it’s not as warm as it looks. :/ But it’s really good for layering!

    1. Thanks Sadie! I love what your company stands for. And you guys really turn out beautiful items! :) I hope your success continues to grow!
