Okay! The day is here! I’m going to live for three weeks out of a 20 item wardrobe (including shoes).
Now before we get to the what – as in what I’m going to wear – lets go over the why.
Choice – I want to do more with less. I definitely get hung up on the paradox of choice. For me, the fewer things I have to pick from, the easier it is for me to make a choice. I want to see if this makes getting dressed in the morning even more effortless.
Creativity – The more I limit my wardrobe, suprisingly the more options I end up with – due to the need to get creative. If I had never started limiting my wardrobe I’d still be dressing out of the same sleepy combos I’d been wearing for years. Limiting the number of items in my closet ushers in creativity and thinking outside the box. I’m already scheming new combos from my 20 items that I would have never contemplated if I had endless options to choose from.
Challenge – I want to challenge myself to do more with less. The idea of simplifying is so appealing. There are five people in my family, and most days there is stuff and chaos everywhere. Simplifying the few things I can control (my wardrobe) makes me feel at peace in the middle of the crazy. I hope stripping back to a bare bones closet like this will help me identify and cut the fluff in my closet.
The 20 – These are all items already in my winter wardrobe, and most of them are my top worn items. A few of the pieces are things I want to challenge myself to wear more.
1 / white tee
2 / white button up
3 / A-line dress
4 / chambray (similar)
5 / fitted stripes (similar)
6 / boxy stripes
7 / sweatshirt (similar)
8 / flannel tunic (similar)
9 / turtleneck (similar)
10 / turtleneck #2 (similar)
11 / cardigan (similar – size down)
12 / tunic (cuter)
13 / distressed denim (similar)
14 / dark denim
15 / black denim
16 / leggings
17 / oxfords
18 / ankle boots
19 / vans (fair trade tennies)
20 / chelsea rain boots (try ThredUp or Poshmark)
I’ll be living exclusively out of these items for the next three weeks, starting today – wish me luck! I’ll be taking daily photos and posting a re-cap on Friday afternoons. This should be interesting!
The Mini Capsule Challenge was started by my friend Paige. You can read her guidelines here, and you can follow along with us and others using the hashtag #20items21days on Instagram.
I’m so in love with your blog! I’m trying to make some changes in my life, and you are such an inspiration!
Thank you so much for all the amazing posts!
Joana thank YOU for your kind words! Set your mind to the changes you want to make, you can do it!!
I love this and can’t wait to see what outfits you come up with! I’ve been doing a capsule wardrobe for a year and am finally getting the hang of what to purchase for my small collection of clothes. Right now I’m at about 37 pieces for 3 months, and am loving accessories as a way to add variety.
That’s awesome Daisy! I love the work you do over on your blog!!
Hey hey hey! Loving your blog – I reached out through IG! Anyhow, I have now added you to my EF blogger list on my EF Resource page! :) See you soon on my bloggie!

Thank you so much Christine! Excited to be a part of a network of so many amazing women. Excited to check out your blog!
Great choices! I look forward to going through this with you and seeing of we accomplish our goals. And I was the same way with all the kids’ stuff motivating me to take control of my own closet.
Xo,
Paige
I really like the rain boots, those have got to be the most awesome rain boots! And I’m so happy you included your white dress, I remeber how excited you were about it so it will be fun to see all of the ways you style it. (i know for years i wouldn’t wear white dresses because i was so sure the kids would stuff alllll over it but when i finally started wearing them, it wasn’t that bad! Vinegar is ~amazing~ at getting stains out of whites and I’ve managed to save all of my white items thanks to it!)
Good luck with your 20×21 (although it looks like you’re knocking it out of the park!) and thank you for all of your positive words! :)
Great point about the vineager! Such a workhorse. The material is thick and a sort of woven so it’s sort of forgiving. Katie, I know nothing about your personal life – do you have kids?
This looks like such a beautiful wardrobe! Who would even need more than these 20 items, right? I am on the same page when it comes to creativity. My outfits are far more interesting now that I have 23 items in my closet for this Winter season. Also I’m loving your how-to guides! Keep it up :)
– X Marloes
Thanks Marloes!! I am so impressed you live out of a 23 item wardrobe!!
