7 Days of Outfits: Sweater Weather

This was my first week post-10×10, and honestly I felt a teensy bit overwhelmed by my closet. Wearing ten items only for ten days was challenging, but zero decision fatigue was an awesome fringe benefit. Ramping back up to my full closet means a lot of choices when getting dressed.

I am incredibly thankful to be able to partner with a handful of my very favorite brands and makers to showcase their new styles for you, but it makes maintaining a slim closet challenging. I have a few more collaborations lined up though the end of the year, and then I look forward to a break in January. It’s a great time of year to focus on some topics I love: minimizing, cleaning, healthy eating, etc.

For now, here’s what I’ve been wearing the last week. There were some clear winners, and some clear losers…

MONDAY:

Men’s Sherpa Jacket (S), Levi’s | Cashmere Sweater, Everlane | Jeans, Rag & Bone | Boots, style discontinued (similar) | Bag, (similar)

The Coat: When I posted a photo of this jacket on Instagram, I was a little unprepared for the onslaught of comments it would attract. I’ve been eager to get my hands on a sherpa jacket for a few seasons now, though I am not sure it is a 100% style fit for me. This coat is just so warm and cozy though, it’s hard not to wear it. I do have a bit of a hard time knowing what to wear it with. Whenever I pair it with vintage denim (which I wear frequently) I feel like an extra from the set of Stranger Things, not exactly what I’m going for. I love vintage, and vintage-inspired clothing, but if you dress head-to-toe in it, it looks costume-y. For now, I’ve found this jacket works best when mixed with more modern pieces, like slim denim and ankle boots (and not, vintage denim and clogs).

Style Notes: I like the simplicity of this outfit. It’s very functional and incredibly warm. The jeans were a last minute purchase from the Shopbop fall sale. I really like the fit, but the material definitely falls deep into jegging territory. I wish I could mash these with the Everlane dark wash skinnies, and make exactly the pair of jeans I want.

Style Score: 8

TUESDAY:

Merino Turtleneck, found at Goodwill last year (cotton option) | Pants, Jesse Kamm | Cons, thrifted on Poshmark (ethical option) | Leather Tote, c/o Everlane | Necklace, gift from husband

I love this outfit, but I have a love-hate relationship with turtlenecks. I love the look and function of them, but I dislike how constricting they feel on my neck. My little trick for making them feel better is folding down the top, which I find more comfortable. Speaking of comfort, these pants are feeling better and more relaxed each time I wear them. I hope that with continued wear, any discomforts will be a thing of the past.

Style Notes: These wide leg pants look best with a slim-fitting top, so pairing them with my black turtleneck seemed an obvious choice. I’m a big fan of navy-black palettes so I rounded out the look with black Cons and a black leather tote. I love how the Cons keep the look from feeling too ‘serious’ but the leather tote keeps the look from feeling too kitschy.

Style Score: 10! High marks for contrast and a favorable color palette.

WEDNESDAY:

Oversized Sweater, c/o Vetta (currently sold out, but coming back very soon!) | Clyde Work Pant, Elizabeth Suzann | Veja V-10Leather Tote, c/o Everlane

Style Notes:  This is where my styling fell flat for the week. In my mind this look was a good idea but, once I got it on, I did not love it (though I was too stubborn to change…) This looks like ‘athleisure’ to me, which is totally not my thing. I think a different top would have drastically changed the look. A chambray shirt would have been a great swap. I do love this 3-in-1 sweater, which I’ll be featuring soon on the blog, but it just doesn’t work with these pants. Some statement boots would change the look as well. You win some, you lose some, right?

Style Score: 4 Failing grade for style-mismatch and general frumpiness.

THURSDAY:

City Anorak in Black (S), Everlane | Cashmere Crew, Everlane | Jeans (sized down x1), Everlane | rubber boots, J.Crew via consignment (similar)

Today was pumpkin patch field trip day! AKA, seriously cold, rainy and disheveled day. I may have started out tidy, but I ended the day looking like a wild woman, with frizzy hair (it curls at my temples) and muddy boots and jeans. But it was (mostly) fun. Overall, I was pretty impressed with this jacket. I wore a middle layer jacket under it for warmth (in addition to a cashmere sweater) and I stayed nice and warm and dry (with the help of an umbrella). I didn’t get any pictures from the field trip, and I heard one of the parents joke about how they kept trying to take photos, but it just looked like a photo of a bunch of hoods. Ah, Oregon life.

Style Notes: I went for straight function with this outfit, hence the rubber boots (which are hard to see) and the long rain jacket. The cashmere works as a great base layer (on top of a thin tee) because it adds warmth with minimal bulk. I am really digging on these jeans. They are the Modern BF fit from Everlane, which I got in a size down for a more fitted look. They are comfy, sturdy, and still a little slouchy. I wear them at least once per week, sometimes twice. For further reading, see Karin’s recent review!

Style Score: 8 Not super sexy, but super functional, so kinda super sexy in my book.

FRIDAY:

Waffle Knit Cashmere Crew (S), c/o Everlane | Jeans, Rag & Bone | Chelsea Boots, Everlane | Bag, (similar) | Half Moon Pendant, c/o Claus Jewelry

If this outfit had a name it would be ‘Casual Friday Cuddles’ because that’s exactly what this sweater feels like. It will probably see a lot of use this winter. It’s a little thicker and warmer than my other cashmere sweaters and has beautiful details like a split hem at the side and the wrists (which I unfortunately didn’t photograph).

Style Notes: This outfit felt a little intense when I put it together with the dark boots and the dark jeans. But looking at the photographs, I really like how it looks. I always feel like these boots are so hardcore-looking when I wear them, but they’re really not. They are just simple, leather chelsea boots, which happen to be very comfortable!

Style Score: 9

SATURDAY:

T Sweater, c/o Jamie + the Jones | Jeans (sized down 1x), Everlane | Veja V-10 | Bag, (similar) | Necklace, Pursuits of Happiness

It was raining cats and dogs today, and I opted for another easy look. However, I think I would have liked this a lot better with looser-fitting jeans, aka my original vintage jeans. This look here doesn’t do anything for me, I think the necklace is wrong too.

Style Notes: Often I opt for slimmer-fitting bottoms when donning an oversized top, but sometimes the look feels too ‘conventional’ for my taste. If I were to re-style this look, I’d stick with the sweater, swap in vintage denim, and maybe go for some lace up booties. Or, I’d keep the jeans and sneakers and opt for a chambray shirt and an oversized cardigan.

Style Score: 6

SUNDAY:

Shirt, Tradlands | Denim, Vintage Levi’s via Etsy | Clogs, No.6 | Sweater, Zady (no longer available) (similar) | Necklace, Pursuits of Happiness

Yes! This is back in the land of my style-territory. Loved wearing this outfit. It served me well all day. I layered down when I was hot, and layered up when I was cool. The clogs were really comfortable for a day on the go, and I think the necklace is the perfect addition to this outfit.

Style Notes: These jeans are slightly baggy (which is awesome) and I’ve realized that fitted tops look the best with them. One of the quickest ways to make a top ‘fitted’ is to tuck it in! Easy peasy. The sweater is mostly for warmth (it’s alpaca!) but it lends a bit of a fun, grandfatherly vibe to the look.

Style Score: 10

In Review:

FAVORITES: Tuesday, Friday + Sunday

KEY LESSON: I need a little bit of ‘artsy-hipster’ in my outfits, but not too much.

It’s good to be back! What’s working for you this fall? Do you have a little bit of ‘influence’ on your daily wardrobe and, if so, can you put words to it?

  1. How big does that Vetta sweater run? I’m obsessed with it but have been afraid to pull the trigger because I’m afraid it’s TOO oversized.

    1. Hi Dana, it’s decently oversized, but I like the fit of the small. Also, it has really slim-fitting vertically ribbed sleeves, so that helps it from looking too big. I’ll be posting more on the sweater tomorrow!

  2. I love your outfit roundups for style inspiration. Honestly, I really liked both outfits with the sneakers! Definitely more casual and fun and a nice break from some of your other outfits. It just goes to show how something that you don’t feel 100% in can actually look super great from the outside.

    1. That is so interesting! And it goes to show how style is so unique to the person, not necessarily the trend of the season. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

  3. So happy this is back!!! I am obsessed with Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday is so chic, and I love your hair in the bun. Friday is just cozy perfection.

    1. That makes two of us Mel! I’m so happy this is back too!! It definitely gives me more inspiration to dress well each day, instead of phoning it in.

  4. Enjoying the weekly outfit round-up again! I actually rather liked the dark sweater/green clydes with sneakers outfit. At least in the photo, it didn’t read athleisure to me so much as garçonne.

Also, you may remember I asked a question about getting jean waists taken in, and I am happy to say I found a tailor who knew exactly how to do it (using the middle seam, rather than darts)! Fingers crossed they come out well. Thought I’d post for others that the tailor said that particular change is on the line between altering and re-structuring the clothes, so it is important to find someone who is comfortable doing that.

    1. Ha, I guess I could see how it’s ‘garçonne’ but that’s still not quite my style.

Yes, I do remember your question! That is really interesting, I could see how that borders on re-structuring. Let me know how your pants turn out!

  5. Fun to see the weekly outfit round up again. I actually really liked Wednesday’s outfit mainly because it looked SUPER comfy. Maybe it would have worked better for you if you had worn ankle boots instead of sneakers to elevate it a little. That waffle knit cashmere in Friday’s outfit looks super comfortable and cute too!

  6. Man I loved this week so much. I’ve noticed you have a ton of the Everlane cashmere sweaters – I really want to pull the trigger on getting one. Is there one style/color you’ve preferred or would recommend as the most versatile? We wear similar color palettes.

    1. Hi Lacey! Great question! My least favorite is the v-neck, I am not sure why. My very favorite is the cropped crew, a style they don’t make anymore. I wear my doneal (cropped crew) the most, so I’d say go for the crew either in Donegal or Oatmeal (limited stock!), which is a gorgeous shade I wish I had. Hope that helps!

      1. Super helpful – thank you! Also? It doesn’t hurt those are the cheapest cashmere options 😉.

These posts are my absolute favorite 🙌🙌🙌

  7. So glad 7 days is back! I like Tuesday best. I agree that it’s nice to have an unconventional element for interest/personality. One thought I have is that that element can be an offbeat hairstyle (crown braids, double buns, etc). I like to mix up my hair when I’m feeling boring 😊

    1. Yes, I love that idea! Or for me it can be earrings or lipstick too. I love how the smallest of details can have the biggest of impact on a look.

  8. Let’s chat for a minute about the Everlane anorak, shall we? I have been looking at that raincoat for a while now and I think i have read all 377 reviews :) I haven’t purchased it yet because I’m not sure about the position of the pockets. What did you think about the pockets? Are they uncomfortable to use? I ended up buying a north face raincoat off ebay. It hasn’t arrived yet… I might buy the everlane anorak too and see which one I like better.

    1. Hi Michelle! The pockets are a tad high! But they are not a deal breaker for me. I will say, my friend has the same (city anorak) jacket, and she feels it isn’t waterproof enough. She just ordered the men’s elements jacket (which is super cute!) in a small, I think that one is supposed to more waterproof. Not sure about the pocket situation on that one. Hope that helps!

    2. I have this in a small in olive and love it. I am
5’6” and think the pockets are perfect because they’re slanted and nothing falls out when you sit. Highly recommend this.
My husband has the men’s version and it’s just as amazing but definitely built for a mans frame, so keep that in mind if you go that route.

  9. Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday are so good, Andrea. One of the things, I struggle with is deciding how to accessorize an outfit. I feel like the older I get, the more bling I need, but then I see Thursday’s photos and love the clean, polished feel of it. It’s hard to imagine that you looked messy at the end of the day in this outfit.

    1. I suck at accessorizing, so I almost always omit it. But when I do do it, I either love it or hate it. I guess that reveals I have a lot of learning still to do. But I do love how accessorizing can breathe new life into an existing wardrobe.
Why do you think you feel like you need more bling? I go for subtle bling, haha, like double-pierced ears with gold studs.

  10. What a great week of outfits!
I too feel a little overwhelmed after the 10×10 and have pretty much been wearing the same outfit all week (denim leggings and a wool poncho).
It’s funny how I like the outfits that are not on the top of your list. I love this sherpa jacket, although I understand your doubts about it (I got one as a gift last year, personalized it with pins and patches, but still don’t feel like it’s quite right). I really like your Tuesday (I struggle a little with my cashmere turtleneck too, as I get too warm in it if I go for a walk) and Saturday outfits (to me the top + necklace + jeans combination is perfect!).
I ordered the Everlane anorak 2 days ago and now fear I got the wrong size (I chose Medium). I knew I’d wear layers underneath but now wonder whether it’s gonna be too big…
Oh and now I wish I had ordered a waffle sweater, it looks so good on you!

    1. Hi Chloe! You never know about the jacket, maybe a medium will work? At least you can exchange it. But gosh, their shipping has gotten painfully slow!
So interesting about the sherpa jackets! Going to try again with mine today (since: no rain). I almost wonder if it’s too ‘young’ of a look for me? I’d love to see yours sometime!

      1. Just sent you a DM with pics of my “customized” sherpa jacket.
So the anorak is too wide in M, but now your comment about the men’s version makes me wonder whether I should give it a try, since it would be more waterproof. Does your friend Michelle have any feedback (especially fit-wise, I have wider hips so I sometimes need to order a bigger size in men’s jackets)?

  11. I love seeing these roundups Andrea because it’s fun to see how you’re style has evolved through “the years”… I feel like you’ve really hone it in! And thanks for mentioning my review!

    1. You are the 3rd or 4th one to mention my style ‘evolution’ lately! Makes me so curious how I’ve changed in your eyes! Thank you for the kind words friend!

  12. So happy you’re back doing this series! Thursday, Friday and Sunday are my favorite looks on you!
I got myself the cashmere crew in donegal. You’re so lucky they send you so much free stuff so you don’t have to choose! It was hard to not order the waffle stitch one in black, but I wasn’t prepared to spend more than the $100 I had saved for an early birthday gift.
The pumpkin patch sounds fun. I can’t wait to go on field trips and do stuff like that when my son gets bigger. We took him this year and all he did was sleep lol.

    1. Ah, thanks Jodie! I’m so happy to be doing it again. I really, really enjoy it! And it’s great incentive to dress well, instead of easy. I hope you love your donegal, that’s hands down my favorite! And I’ve had it for almost two years! The other ones I bought last season and still really like them, but I am mixed on the v-neck!
The pumpkin patch was fun, and the kids were sooo cute! Even in the rain and cold. :) I remember ‘sleeping’ pumpkin trips when my girls were babies!!

  13. It’s funny – I really like some of the outfits you didn’t, and I’m not crazy about some of your favorites. Everyone’s tastes are different though. I appreciate that you discuss function: I get annoyed with local (hot and humid climate) bloggers who post photos of items I could never actually wear here: skin tight leather, silk, bulky synthetic sweaters – it’s obvious they are just hawking Nordstrom’s latest. Ok end of rant. I love those Everlane boyfriend jeans – they just won’t quit!

    1. Function is like 80% of the reason behind why I wear what I wear! Fashion without function just feels absurd to me, especially in everyday life. I know exactly what you mean. I look at bloggers all the time, and ask myself, “do they really wear that?” It just seems so over the top! End of my rant too. Glad you can relate! ;)

  14. I’m sorry to hear that you’re still breaking in the Kamm pants, but also glad to know it isn’t just me. I keep wondering if I’m going to regret sticking with them, but they get a little looser/more comfortable every time I wear them.

Also feeling a little overwhelmed with my closet (but excited and rejuvenated too) after the 10×10. Magically some of the things on my “to buy” list don’t seem as important after doing the exercise. WIN!

    1. Eh, I don’t mind too much, sometimes the best things take time, you know? I think that’s why I like vintage denim so much, it’s been broken in for years already!! I hope yours keep getting more comfortable too.
YES! What a great benefit from your 10×10. Love hearing that!

  15. Loving the weekly roundup! I really like Monday, Tuesday and Thursday! I feel the same way about turtlenecks. I love seeing them on other ppl but find wearing one really annoying. I purchased Everlane’s mock wool turtleneck hoping it won’t be as constricting. We will see!

  16. Hi! I ordered a pair of the everlane modern boyfriend jeans in bone and I sized down but they are a bit tighter than the look I was going for. Do they stretch out? A little? A lot? Trying to decide if I should exchange. Thanks :)
