Time for some truth talk. I am starting to get a little tired of wearing the same clothes over and over. But one can do anything for ten days, right? I do truly believe this exercise in discipline is a great way to gain personal style insights and push creativity, so onward I shall go.
LOOK 5:
[ shift dress | black sweater | rigid denim (same style also in stretch denim now) | chelsea boots | tote, c/o | Mantis necklace, c/o (use code seasonsandsalt10 to save 10%) ]
Say “hi” to Stella, the photo bomber! ><
Overall I really liked this outfit! I was surprised to feel like myself (and not a hippie-lady like I thought I might). Also the black and dark denim combo makes my heart swoon a little bit.
STYLING NOTES
>> I felt like this look needed a long necklace to break up the collar-to-knee black, and I like the way this particular piece of jewelry works. It’s fun and drapey, and made by one of my favorite Portland gals, the owner of Loop Jewelry. She’s been a partner of Seasons + Salt from nearly the beginning. It has been fun watching her designs evolve, and showcasing them for you guys.
>> I’m not sold on a grey tote with this look, I think camel would have worked just as well, maybe even a little better.
>> A small logistical problem I faced with this outfit was how to access my back pockets! Because I had jeans on, I kept wanting to access them, slipping my phone in there, a receipt, etc. But it was slightly awkward to hike my dress up high enough to get to them. I had to mentally un-train myself to use them for the day.
Speaking of multi-use dresses, did you see how Paige tucked her dress in and made it a top? I LOVED that. Genius. Chic. Overall she is nailing this 10×10 hardcore!
LOOK 6:
[ turtleneck | sweater, s/o (similar in navy) | pants (currently on sale!) | boots | earrings | necklace ]
How do you feel about wearing a look you haven’t seen before. Do you wait until you see it somewhere else, as sort of a safety net? Or do you plunge ahead into uncharted territory? I took a turn to the latter with this look.
STYLING NOTES
>> I knew I wanted a long cardigan and a high-waist combo, it’s a great way to add leg-length even with super wide pants. But the turtleneck was a bit of a challenge because without a layer underneath it is quite sheer, and not the look I was going for. So I opted for a white undershirt. Kind of different, but I kind of like it. It adds a nice layer of subtle depth to the look.
>> My main challenge with this look was deciding which coat to wear. A short coat usually looks best with these pants, but with this long sweater (and super chilly weather), I needed something longer. I have a fitted puffer-style jacket which looked o-kay, but a looser wool jacket probably would look best. But there does come a point where I just want to stay warm and I stop caring how I look. It feels good to forsake vanity sometimes.
>> Overall I really liked this look, it’s cozy and comfy and easy to wear (minus the outerwear component).
I’m not the only one who has been facing weather challenges. Harben had to make a last minute swap to deal with the rain, and she has seriously slayed her 10×10 looks. I might just go back and study them a little more.
Hope your week is off to a great start!

Andrea
yay, Stella! :) really like the dress/jeans combo!
Thanks Andrea! It’s definitely one I will repeat! And I definitely thought of you when I chose the Stella photo. ;)
Adore the dress/sweater/jeans combo! I’d saying you’re absolutely slaying this too – and you’ve made me realise I was too safe with my items and proportions. A dress and some different trousers will definitely be added next time!
It’s fun to stop playing it safe all the time with our clothing choices, huh? Yay for learning to stretch the limits with what’s already in your closet. Even though you didn’t include those items this round, it sounds like you learned something good! :)
Thanks for sharing, and sticking with it. I am also getting a little bored (even though I skipped a weekend)
I’m not a fan of the sheer look of the white turtleneck but I love the first look. I need a versatile dress.
Good luck on your hunt for a dress Johanne! I bet you could make one. :) I do love this Hackwith Design House dress quite a bit!
I like the interesting silhouettes these challenges force on us. I haven’t done a 10×10, but Dressember made me pretty angsty by the end. Still, now I can see my dresses in a new light and I also proved to myself I can stick with something, which is nice.
That’s pretty cool to hear. I could see how that would happen from wearing dresses for a whole month. Pretty impressive that you stuck to that! And enjoy your time at the march!!
Again, I’m LOVING how you’re styling this shift dress!
(And I think you’re totally slaying the 10×10 looks, too. Keep it up, girl!)
Thank you Erin!! It has been really fun!
I’m not blogging it and I’m a little late to the game, but I’ve decided to hop on 10×10 too. I’m starting tomorrow, allowing myself to skip Saturday (since I’ll be in DC for the #womensmarch and will need to dress for the bus and weather), so I’ll go till next Friday. I had some significant life changes recently, plus doing Apartment Therapy’s January Cure, so I decided to just roll with it. Thanks to AT I now have a much emptier fridge, an empty shelf in the linen closet, a whole empty drawer in the kitchen(!!!!) and two empty shelves in my pantry/cupboard. I wondered what that would be like if I could do that to my closet too? I’m too emotionally attached to a lot of my clothes to purge as easily as I did old toiletries, but maybe this will get me on the right path. I did 10 clothing pieces, not counting shoes or coats, since this is my first rodeo and I decided to be easy on myself :) Workout clothes don’t count either (that’s another whole beast of a challenge…) I’ve already had one last minute emotional switch with a cardigan, so we’ll see how it goes!
Excited for you Anne! Did you read Leah’s post about the march?
I agree it is easier to let go of old toiletries, but I think letting go of unused clothing gets easier with practice!
That’s great info, thanks! The leaders of our bus cohort made sure we read the FAQs but I didn’t even think of carrying things like hand sanitizer and a map. I think I have one from a trip somewhere, or I guess I could print a few pages. I have running clothes with lots of pockets that I will layer with jeans and a raincoat so I am not worried about the lack of backpack. I live in Michigan so I know how to prepare for elements too ;)
I LOVE the dress over the jeans! Love. The best part of the 10×10 is wearing items in unexpected ways and it’s great to see how the different proportions and shapes look on you – I’m getting some new ideas. After 3 days off, I’m ready to get back at it tomorrow. And hi to that sweet little Stella. As always, thanks for the blogger love :)
xo,
Paige
Stella thanks you for the generous attention! ><
You look great. I agree that playing with proportions, especially vis a vis longer layers over pants, can be so generative! Today (Day 8 for me), in a desperate attempt to wear a dress while still keeping warm, I actually put my midi dress (below the knee) over boyfriend (non-skinny) jeans and was surprised to find that I DON’T just look like a pile of laundry! What?!
That’s awesome! Isn’t funny how we have to be coerced into experimenting?!? A change in silhouette can be such a good thing.
