Fall Planning, On My List

While I’m soaking up the sun this week, I’m simultaneously making plans for my fall closet! The thought of adding some well-considered new items to my repertoire has my creative juices running in overdrive right now.

Fall/Winter is always a tricky time of year to shop for because the clothes have to be every bit as functional as they are stylish. (It rains for about 90% of our cold season!) I always hope what I wear will be a true expression of myself and my style, while simultaneously keeping me warm and dry. ;) I’ve made a few purchases and I’m weighing others, and right now, here’s what’s turning my head.

COLUMN 1:

1   |   BLACK WOOL HAT   –   I’ve long wanted a high-quality wool hat. I have one from Target that’s brought me a lot of good use, but it’s on its last legs, and I’m ready for its cooler, big sister. I’ve been stalking the Yellow 108 label for some time and I’m really impressed by their USA made hats. I would like something I can wear on bad hair days, and on days I’d like to keep the drizzle off my tresses. The brim on their Dylan Fedora, might just be wide enough to do the trick.

2   |   WIDE LEG PANTS   –   I can’t get enough of this shape and, while it’s been a spring darling, I’d love to see it work for cooler weather. This white denim option by Reifhaus is longer and thicker than what I’ve previously seen, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t drooling just a bit. Plus, the styling with this shirt dress is just so. darn. good. The full AW16 line by Reifhaus drops on Friday!

3   |   LONG SLEEVES FOR LAYERING   –   I knew this item would be on my list since early summer. It’s the layering piece I found myself wishing for during the winter. I’d like to wear a long-sleeved cotton tee under: my favorite gray cape sweater, my favorite jumpsuit (currently on sale!), and even a dress. I have a feeling this will become a wintertime workhorse, seeing as how I never like to be cold! Everlane’s Pima Long-Sleeve tee is my top option right now.

4   |   OLIVE PANTS   –   These guys have been on my list for more than a year now! At first I wanted joggers, but never got them, and then I came across these by Elizabeth Suzann. I was sold at the description ‘work pants.’ When you have three kids, pretty much everything involves a lot of work. Durable clothes are non-negotiable. Plus, pockets. Maybe this year will be the year I pull the trigger and get them.

COLUMN 2:

5   |   WARM TONE SWEATER   –   As I’ve sliced and diced most color from my wardrobe, I am interested in letting a few neutral, warm tones slide back in. I love the shade of this ‘ochre’ sweater, and the open knit weave would make it easy to wear in early fall. It would look chic with those wide leg, white denim pants from #2, or paired with a pair of ripped, black jeans.

6   |   BLACK CARDIGAN   –   I’m on the fence about whether I actually need this, but it seems like a great option for throwing over a short-sleeved top on days I don’t want to commit to a pullover sweater. Zady has an excellent alpaca option (on sale!) and of course you probably remember how much I love Everlane’s cashmere.

7   |   BLUSH TOP   –   Like I was saying, those warm neutrals are starting to look pretty appealing to me. I love how soft this Sutton Blouse by Only Child looks, both in fabric and in color. I almost bought a blush top in the spring on two separate occasions, and I think the shade would be perfect for fall, especially when peeking out from underneath chunky sweaters and faded denim jackets. The full Fall line by Only Child debuts on Monday!

8   |   BLACK HEELED ANKLE BOOTS   –   I’ve been day dreaming about styling my dresses for fall with a boot that matches in style factor. Of course these Acne booties are about as amazing as they come, but definitely not in my price range. But I’ve got my eye on Everlane’s Modern Heel Boot, in their ‘coming soon‘ section and I’m semi-stalking Fortress of Inca.

Now that I’ve shared my fall picks, let’s hear yours! What colors/shapes/styles are you eyeing?

xo,
Andrea

  1. I love, love, love the warmer tones and the blush for fall. I definitely leaned toward lighter neutrals during spring, but I’m ready to bring my warmer tones out for fall and winter. How are you prioritizing your list? I’m looking to add some variety to my pants collection and adding some on-trend footwear options to update my look. But I think you already knew that…;)

    1. That is the million dollar question Paige, prioritizing is hard because I can’t/don’t want it all. I think it would be:

      Hat
      Pants
      Shirt
      Ankle Boots

  2. Love your list! I haven’t fully indulged in making a fall wishlist yet but I know I’m leaning toward many of the same shapes, colors, and vibes. At the top of my list would definitely be a pair of Clyde pants – I’ve been eyeing them for so long! But I recently found out that the even the tall size isn’t tall enough for me (and I’m not interested in fall capris) – so bummed. I actually sew a lot and might try to make something similar. A longline cardigan and new ankle boots are the other two priorities since I lost my favorite old threadbare cardigan and my chelsea boots are on their last legs. I just learned that Red Wing boots is launching a “women’s heritage” line so I’m looking forward to seeing that.

    1. Hi Jess! What a bummer about the length of the Clyde pants, I hear ya, I’m not into fall capris either. I am not sure whether I’d get the regular or tall for myself. If you find a good pattern, do share! Good luck with the longline cardigan and ankle boots! Oh man, there is a store that sells a lot of Red Wings in Portland, and the shoes are just gorgeous!! Do you think you’ll maybe get a pair of those??

      1. I’m waiting to see what styles Red Wing releases – I like their men’s styles (which do come in small enough sizes to fit most women) so I’m hoping that the the women’s line has a similar ruggedness without being too feminine. I live in Minneapolis and they’re made in state so they’re a pretty big deal — and I just learned they’ll have a launch party at a new ethical boutique in the city! Have you heard of Hazel & Rose? You might be interested in their online shop: https://www.shophazelandrose.com/
As for the Clydes, to be honest I’m still going back & forth! I’m looking forward to seeing their “Diversity Campaign” photos and how fit varies across different body types.
        Cheers!

  3. Great list! The things I’m looking at for fall are mules, culottes, and (always) chunky sweaters. I know I’ve recommended the Clyde pants before, but my love for them has only increased as I’ve had mine. They really are incredibly durable–and mine even seem to magically repel stains.

And I have to thank you for the tip on that Zady sweater being on sale. I actually just managed to lose my cardigan (kicking myself!) and I’m panicking because it’s such an everyday item. I think the Zady one sounds amazing though! No pilling? I have to try.

    1. LO, remind me, are you in California? I just don’t think I could get away with mules for the fall. I actually bought a pair last year and returned them. But I definitely love the style of them soooo much. And chunky sweaters, so good. I love hearing what you have to say about the Clyde pants. It’s just so hard for me to pull the trigger at that price point, so I think I might wait it out and see if they have any sales around Christmas. And I also have my ebay alert set up. ;)

Let me know how you like the Zady cardigan!!

      1. Yeah, I’m in LA, but I sooooo hate being cold so I pretty much dress as most people would in cooler climates. Wishing you luck with your eBay alert!

  4. My fall wishlist looks eerily similar to yours, actually! I’m trying to really focus on bringing it back to basics and think about what I actually wear all the time – for fall/winter, that’s skinny pants and pullover sweaters most of the time! And I’ve got an eye on the Yellow 108 hats as well! I love that they come in different sizes – most hats are too big for my tiny skull!

    1. Best of luck with your hat search Stacy! I’ve already been to Animal Traffic twice, haha!! :) Let’s be hat twins. :)

  5. Great list! I just got a pair of olive joggers from Bridge & Burn (one of your favs, I know) a few weeks ago & I am absolutely in love. They look awesome with everything, are buttery soft & feel amazing on. Another great jogger option for you. Keep the posts coming!

    1. I saw those Kim, they DO look super cute! I think I want something a little thicker, so that’s why I didn’t get them. But I love hearing your opinion on them! I bet they will be perfect for fall, to show a little ankle, with some low-cut boots or mules.

  6. I love that blush top! I just placed an Everlane order, but they are all short sleeved tops to replace old ones in my closet that have holes. I may need to add the blush top to the mix, too. I can’t even begin to think about fall yet it’s so hot here. I would like to invest in a good quality cardigan this fall, but other than that I think I am good. (We’ll see if I’m still saying that once cool weather hits.) :-) I’m still trying to get accustom to the wider pant trend after years of skinnies, so it’s doubtful if I will include a pair, although I love the look on other women!

    1. Oooo! Girl, which t-shirts did you choose? I hope they work out for you! I’m still going strong on my u-necks I bought more than two years ago! Which is pretty amazing for a t-shirt. Good luck with the cardigan hunt, that’s always a hard one for me! So many of them are so delicate and hard to care for!

      1. I bought the Linen Scoop-Neck in charcoal, the Texture Tee in cream, and the Drop-Shoulder Tee in black. I wanted to buy a muscle tank, too, since my old J Crew tank has a hole, but I figured it was better worth my money to buy tees that would carry over to fall. I have a u-neck tee I bought in the spring that seems very well made and should last me for a long time. Do you have the Everlane cashmere cardigan? If so, is it hard to care for?

  7. You’ll have to let me know how the Yellow 108 hat is…I almost bought one of their brown fedoras last year! Still thinking about it. I would like to add black jeans and a pair of flat boots from Nisolo tomy F/W wardrobe, just not sure when I’ll be able to do so. I have the Zady cardigan and can attest to its versatility!

    1. Hey Jenna!! I got my hat a few days ago, and I am trying to get it to fit my head still. It’s a little stiff at first, but it’s soooo cute, and sooo well made! And I feel kind of cool in it, ha!

Did you see that Nisolo added black to their flat boot collection? Love them. Sometimes Nisolo has a way you can get a discount off your first order or use a referral code to get a discount.

You have that exact Zady cardigan??

      1. Yes, the alpaca one in black/charcoal…pretty sure I got a small but could have gotten an XS. It’s great quality and construction; I really love the buttons. The alpaca itches me a little, but I have fairly sensitive skin. Nothing like regular wool does on me, but also not buttery smooth like cashmere.

  8. I’m really into nudes and beiges now, too. Great picks. Honestly, I can’t get into the cold weather spirit until I’m forced to, but I’ve been squirreling away sweaters I’ve found at thrift shops for the past few months, so I’m pretty well prepared!

  9. I am anxiously awaiting the new arrivals from only child, I love the sneak peeks Haley has put on her Instagram page! I am going to have to bite on a pair of Nisolo oxfords, can’t decide between the almond and the carbon colors. If anyone finds cute Chelsea boots that are weatherproof/waterproof, please comment, I’ve been looking for a couple of years now.

    1. Hi Lizzie!! Man, I love the Nisolo oxfords, I love how minimal they are. I have the almond, which I love, but I think the carbon might work better in the winter because it probably wouldn’t show dirt/water so much. That being said, I’m getting ready to ‘winterize’ my almond oxfords. I’m buffing the leather with weatherproofing cream, which will probably darken them a bit, and I’m taking them to the cobbler to get a toppy sole put on the leather bottoms.

Re: waterproof boots – I thrifted some J.Crew chelsea rainboots that are pretty great! But, you know, they’re synthetic, so not as awesome as waterproof leather ones would be. Good luck! Keep us posted!

  10. I’m wanting – among other things – a classic blazer to wear over my vintage dresses, some vintage wool pants, a nice big Baggu tote, and a vintage military jacket. Lusting after the No. 6 store crepe-sole chelsea boots too. :)

  11. I only buy La Canadienne boots. Excellent quality. Sometimes you can find them for sale on Amazon or 6PM.

A lot of them are waterproof.

  12. You know…for the first time in ever I don’t have much of a list! I really want some cute grey Nikes , I’m considering a pair of Everlane’s oxfords and a close fitting black turtleneck shirt would be nice.
