This summer I have engaged in some shameless outfit repeating. The reason: pure survival (I've been busy). But after reflecting a bit this week, I've realized there are some excellent benefits to outfit repeating that are worth mentioning on the blog. These are great to keep in mind if you feel reluctant to repeat (don't worry, no one cares or notices!) or if you feel stuck when getting dressed in the morning.

3 Benefits of Outfit Repeating:

1 // You look good every day and you always like what you’re wearing. Because I am wearing 'tried and true' outfits, I always feel good and I always feel like myself. My outfits are previously executed formulas that work for me. Some examples are: a high neck tank and my favorite cut-offs, or a favorite matching set. I might change it up a little bit with shoes or earrings or hairstyle, but sometimes I don't. This reason alone is worth it to me to repeat my outfits. The more confident I feel in my outfit, the more easily I can kick my insecurities to the curb.

2 // Repeating outfits creates mental space for other things. Overall I've been spending less time getting dressed, less time brainstorming outfits and less time shopping (more of that in #3). This cleared out mental space has allowed more room for things like family, work and fun. Not to mention, I have very little stress over what I'm wearing and I can get dressed very quickly in the morning.

3 // Way, way less money spent. When you openly repeat outfits, you realize how little clothes you need and how much you already have. And when you can easily make several outfits you love, shopping is a lot less tempting. I find this extra helpful for my summer clothing budget, which is considerably smaller than my cold weather budget because our warm weather season is short.

I am confident this is just the tip of the outfit repeating iceberg, and there are more reasons to be considered. If you have some to share, feel free to add them below. Meanwhile, here's a look at the outfits I wore and repeated this week.

Happy (almost) Spring!! The early flowers and leaf buds are popping and I am ready to awake from my winter sartorial slumber.

Not that I've been in an actual slumber, more I've been in a 'winter-stay-warm' preservation mode. Now, like the flowers, I am ready to shoot forth with vibrance and bold shapes. In my closet that is. I touched on this briefly in my Currently Wearing series, but I recently realized that when the seasons change (particularly toward spring), my sense of style gets taken for a bit of a joy ride. Seemingly overnight I start feeling emboldened to experiment with color and shapes more than ever. And it feels intoxicating.

Unfortunately, last spring my desire ran unchecked and, in a covid-haze, I purchased and experimented so much that I lost my way a bit. I ended up with items that weren't ultimately 'me' that I later sold or gave away. This year, I am entering the season armed with new knowledge and some soft parameters. For my color expansion, I plan to keep to a family of shades within one core color: green. And for my shape experimentation, I will stick to oversized jeans and trousers. It feels simple, but I expect it will still be impactful and fun.

Before we dive into my spring capsule, a few notes. It truly looks a lot like my winter one with some smallish changes. In Oregon, spring is still quite chilly. We don't see truly warm temperatures until the end of May. For the next three-ish months, I have swapped out heavier sweaters for cotton ones, turtleneck sweaters for crew neck ones, boots for sneakers, and I will even be able to wear some long sleeve tops on warmer days. I will eventually move my heaviest coats to a spare closet, and make the most of trench weather.

All images below are shoppable links.

Tops

After a winter diet of heavy sweater use, I am happy to swap in some tops! My most recent purchase is a bright green striped top. I bought my oversized one from Aritzia, and I linked another option in the graphic below. You'll note my heavy emphasis on white button up shirts. These are truly a staple for me and they are all different! One is very oversized, one is an oxford, one has a ruffle collar and one has puffy sleeves! *Edited 3/15 to add a chambray peterpan collar top.*

Sweaters + Sweatshirts

You can see my clearly defined color palette here, I love my taupe, cream and black! As it warms up, I'll use some of these pullover sweaters and sweatshirts as a third piece, draped across my shoulders.

Bottoms

I am having a ball with pants this year, in all the shapes and colors that they come in! All of these are the exact pairs I own with the exception of the white denim, wide leg jeans and black trousers (though the latter two are on my radar for checking out this spring). *Edited 3/15 to add full-length Madewell jeans.*

Shoes

It's always hard to narrow down which shoes I want to wear, but these are the pairs I have been gravitating toward lately. It's all sneakers, all the time and I'm very happy about that. Heeled booties come out on special occasions only. *Edited 3/28 to add full-length Reformation Loafers.*

Dresses/Jumpsuits

This category is new for my spring capsule. I didn't include any 'one piece' items in the winter. I am excited to reunite with my overalls and one of my favorite dresses. (Mine is older, so I've linked a similar one down below.)

Jackets

My favorite part about transitional weather is the ability to wear different jackets! Trenches are my ABSOLUTE favorite, so I've included two iterations here. A taupe one that goes with everything, and a black one that is slightly padded for warmth. And, of course, a few blazers! My favorite oversized black one AND that sweet leather one I thrifted (linked to a similar one below).

Evergreen Accessories / Sunglasses, Jewelry, Bags

Below is my core collection of the accessories I wear each week, and some even daily! Gold hoops are my staple, in all sizes. I have worn my croissant pair for the last 2-3 years, I love the texture that they add to an outfit. For sunglasses, Ray-Ban is my go-to. And when building an outfit, I love to include a bag that complements my color palette - I love to pair cognac bags with black outfits and black bags go with everything under the sun.

Spring Wish List:

There are a few items I haven't purchased yet, but I am considering adding this spring:

- The newly released Mel Jumpsuit from Alex Mill has me very excited. I love the full length, straight leg, patch pockets and tie waist. I just need to decide between black and green.
- I love, love the new oversized checked blazer from Everlane. I am just trying to decide if I wear blazers enough to buy it.
- A maxi dress is on my list for the spring, and I might scoop this one up when Shopbop has their spring sale.
- This cropped, vintage-y hoodie. Anine Bing makes the best sweatshirts.
- And lastly, this woven bag with a dual-strap situation seems like the perfect do-it-all bag (would sell my Dragon Diffusion bag in this case).

On the Way:

I have a few items on the way from orders/brand partnerships that I haven't tried yet, but am excited to check out and add to my capsule if they are a good fit: taupe trousers (bought) and these jeans (gifted). I'll be sure to make updates to this page if I add them to my closet! In the meantime, feel free to let me know if you have questions about any of the items or are curious about sizing. See you over on Currently Wearing with the outfits!

Yes, I won't lie. I am starting to daydream about cooler weather and the wardrobe changes that come with it. BUT, I am determined to give summer my A+ effort while she's still around. After all, how many days of the year do we face the challenge of wearing as few clothes as possible while remaining committed to our sartorial goals? It's not mission: impossible, in fact, it can be quite the opposite. It's a fun task to take on; limitations often increase creativity!

Here are three outfit formula ideas to take you through the remaining weeks of summer.

Thanks to Everlane for sponsoring this post.
1 // Add a fall color.

This is a great way to give a nod to the impending season, grab a tee or even a long sleeve top (weather permitting) in your favorite autumnal hue and pair it with summer's best cutoffs. It's a fun way to mix in something different for the tanks you've been wearing all summer.

2 // Business meets casual.

Comfort is the way of the world these days, but I also love, LOVE a well-tailored shirt. Combining soft, terry cloth shorts with a smart, button-up shirt feels fresh and balanced.

I've been really into oversized tailored shirts and, after pinning them for a very long time, I finally have my own! This is a new release from Everlane called the Boxy Oxford Shirt. It's loose and wide, but not particularly long. The thing that stands out the most to me is the substantial, oxford fabric. It's soft and weighty, and I think it will be great for year-round wear. The second thing that drew me to this shirt is the front pockets. I LOVE them. It's a slightly feminine touch on a masculine feeling shirt and I think it creates a nice balance. I tried this in my true size and a size up, and I ended up liking my true size the best. The size up felt too wide. Everlane also released a more classic oxford style shirt called the Relaxed Oxford Shirt. This one looks like it features the same great fabric, but it has a more classic, albeit relaxed, fit.

3 // Tank + baggy jeans.

If you missed it, I shared a YouTube video over the weekend featuring how to style baggy jeans, and this pair was included! I am a big fan of the shift in denim shapes right now, and I predict loose and baggy jeans are going to rocket to popularity over the next year or so. I love the way this tank - complete with a cropped fit and a mock neck - looks with loose jeans. It's very intentional and shows off the high rise of bottoms for an intentional end-of-summer look.

Wearing: the Ribbed Mockenck Tank (M) c/o Everlane, the Way High Jean (27), purchased from Everlane, Platform Sneaker (10), c/o, Mini Form Bag, purchased

Anytime there is an opportunity to make getting dressed easy, I take it. One of my favorite strategies for this is formulas. They're seasonally-based outfit templates that I can use over and over to create looks that don't let me down.

We had a hot spell last week, so I felt particularly inspired to play around in my closet. Shorts weather is definitely on its way in this part of the U.S., so I took the opportunity to brainstorm some new outfit formulas with shorts. I expect shorts to be in high rotation for me again this summer, and I love finding ways to style them that feel intentional.

Below are three formulas I'll be leaning on during the warm months ahead to create chic shorts outfits (say that 3x fast!).

1 // Tailored Shorts + Sweatshirt (or Tee)

EXAMPLE 1:

Sweatshirt / Shorts (old) / Sandals / Bag / Sunglasses

I love a good tailored short, they feel a bit more dressy than cut-offs and are fun to style. This linen pair is one of my favorites, I just love the taupe color. In some ways, they remind me of the Dockers my dad used to wear when I was a kid, pleats and all. (I bet you could thrift a pair!) Trousers are great to pair with more casual tops, like my beloved crewneck sweatshirts. I like the combo of the long sleeve with the shorts because it's a fun play on proportions (if it's not too hot). If it's a toasty day, you could swap the sweatshirt for an oversized t-shirt and tuck it in. Finish with comfy sandals, a tote, and your favorite jewelry. Easy-peasy and pulled-together.

Here's another example with a slightly different color palette. I think the simple play on tones helps elevate the outfit.

It's safe to say one of the best things the pandemic gave us was a wide selection of elastic waist pants and shorts. I don't plan to quit wearing them anytime soon, so I'm always looking for ways to make them feel more styled. Using my rule of mixing casual and dressy, it's only natural to pair them with a button-up! It helps the stretchy waistband seem more 'on purpose' and adds an overall polished look to the outfit.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite all-time shorts formula: the cut-offs and blouse combination. I love it because it feels easy, breezy, and cute every single time. It's a good go-to on those days I just want to feel pretty. (Please tell me I am not the only person who tries to meet emotional needs with their wardrobe.)

I shared a bit about the shorts above on Instagram (it's saved to my Everlane highlights). But in brief: I really like them. I am wearing my true size. They are fitted at the waist and loose everywhere else.

And below: one more fun example of the blouse + cut-offs combination. I love pairing white and denim together. It's my forever-favorite!

Now that Halloween has passed, all eyes are on the holidays! Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and more, 'tis the season for feeling festive! And by all accounts, I think we get to start a little early this year, because 2020.

I know so many of us are staying home, trying to do our part to keep Covid from spreading, and that means the holidays are going to look different than we'd like. But we can still decorate our homes, buy our loved ones gifts, cook wonderful meals, and *dress up!* Putting on an extra nice outfit is one of the surest ways to add a bit of 'occasion' to your day without ever leaving the house. For that reason, I feel like holiday style is particularly important this year.

Today I am sharing a top and a dress, two items that can be used to make beautiful holiday outfits *AND* some excellent everyday looks. (I love, love when items pull double-duty and these ones don't disappoint.) They are both made with original Hackwith Design House custom prints. The team designed the fabric in-house and then had it made in LA with ultra-soft, 100% cotton fabric. I am so excited to show you how I'm wearing them.

This deep red, printed fabric immediately caught my eye. I love the subtle, floral print and the way the colors mingle together. The Peasant Blouse is gathered at the collar and sleeves, which makes it a light and stretchy blouse, easy to get on and off. I love the soft, feminine shape of this top. The ruching around the neckline creates a gentle puff sleeve at my shoulders and wrists, adding a small touch of whimsy.

When taking pictures for this post, I could not decide which shoes I liked best, so I am going to show you both. The first pair is a more dressy option, something I might wear for a holiday dinner at home. (In reality, I think I'd prefer to wear black flats instead of pumps, but I don't have any.)

This is the kind of live-in dress that dreams are made of. It's the ultimate relaxed-fit piece and, if you add heels or clogs, you suddenly look really pulled together. This would be perfectly romantic to wear to a holiday dinner. You could go for clogs, or swap in lace-up boots. Mules would be cute too. The Provence Dress offers a lot of drama with the volume play, but the neutral print keeps it understated. I think this dress would look super cute with a low bun and big hoop earrings. And, as you can see below, I had some ideas on how to dress it up and how to wear it for a 'normal' day at home.

The fabric of this dress is ultra-lightweight, which makes it easy to wear because it's not heavy. However, on a cold day, tights or even a light turtleneck underneath might be needed. Or, as I prefer, my wear-over-everything Babaa cardigan. I love the way the light, neutral yarn complements this print. Sweats are fun, but I am sort of in love with the idea of a 'house dress'! Hackwith also recently released the Adelaide Dress with a ruched bodice, that's worth a peek too!

Every year when the hot weather fades and we slip into the colder months, I daydream about the outfits I'm going to wear. And even though jeans are my *very favorite* thing, I always find myself enamored with cold-weather looks that center around skirts and dresses. And I swear to myself I'll do more than live in jeans all winter. (Though that's a fabulous option too.) The best evidence of this is my extensive tights collection that is a nod to my winter aspirations.

I declare: this year will be different!

Right now, I feel extra motivated (might be a creative reaction to these hard times), so I brainstormed a few formulas. It gave me a good excuse to play dress up and see which of my skirts and dresses would be good options for the colder months. And, more importantly, for this blog post, it gave me a chance to see how to experiment with making the outfits work - stylistically and weather-wise.

Here is what I came up with.

1 // Add a cropped sweatshirt and boots

This seems like a no-brainer, just add a sweatshirt and boots. BUT, the shape of the sweatshirt goes a long way to impact the outfit, particularly if you're putting it on over a dress. I found a cropped sweatshirt (like above) makes for really easy styling. The second easiest type is a sweatshirt with a tight waistband. This helps you pull it up a little bit to create a visual waistline over your dress. OR you can simply front tuck into a skirt. Some people have suggested using a hidden belt or tucking into your bra, but both of those methods feel a little fussy for my preference.

I opted for casual and chunky boots to contrast with the shiny, fitted style of this skirt. But I think any flat boots could work. I prefer boots that are fitted at the ankle (instead of loose) because it works with my leg shape in a way that I like. Everyone is different, and knowing what you like best and what works well goes a long way to make outfit building more efficient.

When I bought this skirt I had every intention of taking it from fall to summer because the color is one of my very favorites. What I didn't anticipate was how easy it would be! The shorter length makes it a great candidate for tights because it balances out the 'covered up' factor that often comes from tights. (Similar to the covered-up factor that comes from covered ankles.) The look would be entirely different if the skirt was to my knees or longer.

The chunky cardigan was the easy option for this outfit, and it kept the color palette neutral, which I like when layering. A turtleneck would work with this outfit too, or a chunky pullover, or my favorite - these alpaca sweaters. I also tried this with a flannel shirt and it was really cute.

A note on tights: Getting them on always feels like a pain, but once they're up, they feel quite good. This particular pair was gifted to me last year from Sheertex, and I'm a convert. They make them out of a special *unbreakable* material. I like them because they're just the right amount of sheerness/opaqueness. They don't go too far in either direction. I also have a pair of fleece-lined tights and those are great for the coldest of days.

This one feels like the oldest trick in the book and I suppose that makes it 'tried and true.' I adore the look of the turtleneck and pinafore together. This would also work fabulously with a slip dress or almost any sleeveless summer dress. I styled a linen dress and a white turtleneck a couple of times and loved it. The trick is to make sure you can style and balance the summer aspect of the dress in a way that makes you satisfied with your outfit. Some fabrics or shapes can be harder to transition to fall. For example, a poplin or thin cotton would need more base layers. Or a full and long dress might look too imbalanced with a bulky warm layer on top. The key is to keep trying until you get a combination that feels just right.

I've said this many times before: a little brainstorming ahead of time is often really fruitful for creating outfits you love. Sometimes working outside of 'in the moment' (especially if you're dripping wet from the shower!) can help you be more creative.

I chose these boots again, for my third outfit, because I super-duper love them. They are so comfortable! And they also feel a tad edgy, which is just what a sweet pinafore calls for!

Hello September!

In a world where it feels like life paused in mid-March, it's hard to believe we're turning the calendar to September. In some ways, it makes me want to sob. In other ways, I want to cling to whatever I can to feel normal and good. Right now, getting dressed makes me feel normal, and working out makes me feel good, so I am prioritizing those things every single day.

I am certainly eager to embrace the fall-inspired part of my closet, but summer ain't over yet, so I'm going to choose to continue to live in the moment as long as I can. Afterall, blue sunny skies and balmy temps are certainly worth celebrating. With that in mind, I've brainstormed a few outfit formulas to satisfy my craving for summer AND fall.

I know I've touted this one before, but it's a great 'gateway' outfit to fall! You can bring in a lightweight, fall-toned long sleeve, your fav shorts and some closed-toed shoes, and suddenly your look feels less 'July' and more 'September.' It's a nice way to feel like life is moving forward even when we're kind of in Groundhog's Day mode.

On a totally different note, how do you guys feel about baggy jeans? I feel like I'm seeing them everywhere right now. I love the way they look on other people but, I admit, seeing them on myself is hard, because it's a break out of that mindset of 'smaller is better.' Sometimes the most stylish combination isn't always the most 'body con,' and I'm okay with that. We will see if it holds deeper into the cold weather.

Guys, all winter we live in thick pants and jeans, NOW is the time to wear all our lightweight bebes. All those pretty tencel and linen pants demand your attention. They are perfect for transitional weather. And they are easy to style too because pants always, always look super cute with sandals.

While I love dressing for transitional weather, it definitely requires a little more effort or forethought. Other formulas could be: shorts and cotton sweaters, dresses and sneakers, skirts and ankle boots, and I am sure there are more! Happy seasonal dressing!

I just can't quit the shorts this summer. They make me feel so carefree and relaxed and they are extremely practical for my at-home lifestyle of kids and dogs underfoot. Not to mention I can jump on a bike and go for a ride with my littlest at a moment's notice, or sit on my front porch with no cares of flashing the neighbors. Not to say I don't like skirts or dresses, but there is a certain ease that comes with shorts.

In seasons past I've shied away from shorts for a variety of reasons, and one of them was my lack of confidence in how to style them. I always felt like a little kid in them, or even underdressed or too casual. This summer, as I have been wearing them more and more, I've picked up a few tips to share. I first shared a post in June on how to style shorts so, if you missed that, consider it part 1. Today, I'm coming at you with three MORE tips for styling shorts, ideas I've picked up as we've gotten deeper into the season.

1. Try a Cutout Tank

One thing I've learned over the years of styling and writing about it - the smallest details make the biggest difference. Cutout tanks have been around for a few seasons, and I never gave them much thought (it seemed like too much of a bra hassle to consider it, honestly), until I ordered one on a whim. I was quite surprised how a slight change in the cut of a very basic top - a white tank - could change the whole look of an outfit! I really like wearing my cutout tank because it makes shorts feel fresh and updated, for a relatively small financial investment. I bet it would look cute with a skirt too, a bit of a feminine/masculine combination. (As for the bra situation, I wear mine with racerback style so the straps don't peek out!)

I'm wearing a cutaway tank from Everlane (sized down). Madewell also has a great option. KOTN has a good-looking option too (I really love the quality of their cotton, it is top-notch). I found this one on Zappos, and I'm tempted to try it because it looks like it's the kind that has built-in support, which means you wouldn't need a bra!

(Outfit details: shorts (from last season), sandals)

2. Embrace Pleats

The 1990's called, they said you can keep the pleats in 2020. Even though they are a fantastic throwback, they are chic and fresh today. Want to make a pant or short interesting? Just add pleats. Seriously. Pleated pants are definitely hot right now (I love these, and I own these), and pleated shorts are their cool, Skipper-esque younger sister.

Pleats in shorts are another one of those (not-so-small) details that shift the entire look of the garment. They create volume, add interest, AND space for air flow (perfect for hot days).

These are the Penny Shorts in Tanstone (c/o Esby), and they're currently on sale for pre-order. (I'm wearing a size 4 and my measurements are 28.5" waist and 38" hips.) Penny Shorts are styled with the Jane Tee (size small), also c/o Esby. Shoes are c/o CANO from last season.

Last spring, on a trip to LA with my husband, I wandered into this super cute boutique and was quickly intimidated by all the (extremely cute) crop tops on the hangers. Eventually my resistance was worn down (as I said, they were super cute) and I decided to try one on with a pair of high-waisted jeans. Guess what? A crop top with a high waist doesn't actually show your belly button or your stomach. Instead it just looks super cool and chic. I freaking loved what I saw in the mirror and I bought both pieces on the spot.

This summer, as crop tops are increasingly popular, I find myself no longer intimidated, but rather drawn to them. They are a great complementary piece to baggy jeans, high waisted trousers, pleated shorts, paper bag shorts, you name it! My favorite crop tops are loose and linen, like the one I'm wearing above. This one is c/o Bill + Jay (from last season), and it's the Melissa Tank in the cropped option. It's a spring and summer staple for me. I also love the idea of a snug-fitting jersey crop, and I keep coming back to these (love the cheetah)! I'm also very into this loose cotton option!

(Outfit details: top (see above), shorts, sandals)

Happy shorts styling friends!

How's everyone doing? Stir crazy yet? As we all adapt our days, I thought I'd try and bring some normalcy to our lives and talk about clothes! Today I'm sharing some outfit planning ideas in real-time, on video!

This is the first time I've 'batch' planned my outfits for a whole week at once, and it was a lot of fun! I am wearing them this week, and so far, it's making my mornings a little easier because I already know what I'm going to wear!

Because we are quarantining and at home all week, (trying to do our part to flatten the curve!) weather, schedule, and activities are not a factor. This means I have the freedom to wear whatever I want. So it was kind of fun to brainstorm outfits.

In this video I'm talking about:

--> WHY I like outfit planning.
--> Why getting dressed is especially IMPORTANT in these days of being at home 24/7.
--> The PROCESS I use to get my outfit brainstorm rolling.
--> A peek inside my real-life, not-so-curated closet!

When I was a young 20-something fresh out of college, I remember so clearly my first company holiday party. It was an election year, and the TV station I worked at was feeling flush, so they decided to go big for the night, renting out a fancy country club, complete with a cocktail hour and a sit down dinner. My girlfriends and I lined up dates, put on sleeveless dresses in the dead of winter and had a blast.

Ever since then, the term 'holiday party' has drummed up positive associations in my Christmas-loving mind. I am a big fan of all the celebrations this time of year -- everything from intimate parties, to holiday concerts, to work parties. I love the chance to step out with my husband (who was at that aforementioned holiday party, though we were not dating at the time), converse with other adults, eat, drink, trade gifts, and do all things merry. Everyone seems to be in an extra festive mood and it's usually a jolly time.

Naturally, my very first thought when these occasions arrive: What should I wear?

Okay, I'll be honest, that's my first thought when any occasion arrises! I absolutely love outfit planning. It's one of my favorite things to do. I keep a running list of outfit ideas on my phone that I log as they pop into my head. The same goes for holiday outfits this year. I've dreamed up a few versions of what would be fun to wear, and today I'm sharing with you the one that's the most realistic to my life and current tastes.

THE FORMULA: Black top + Faded jeans + Black pumps

Black is my personal fail-safe any time I need to feel remotely chic or dressed up. It's really hard to fail with black (unless, maybe, you forget your lint roller). I like black paired with faded jeans because it's a little unexpected and contrasts nicely. When I wear a black top, I usually feel I need to anchor it with black shoes or offset it with light (nude, tan, or print) shoes. In this case, the jeans already offset the black top, so I prefer the anchor concept. The look is chic and reads effortless. See a similar example of this formula here.

BLACK TOPS:

[show_shopthepost_widget id="3393375"]

I prefer a long sleeve because you don't have to concern yourself with an extra layer to keep your arms warm. Usually, a long sleeved shirt topped with a smart jacket suffices. I have a couple go-to black long sleeved tops for those occasions when I want to dress up a bit. My long sleeved black button up, and this wrap top. The wrap top is nice because the fabric and the shape are very forgiving. It's a nice, thick jersey which wears well and keeps me on the warmer side. My long sleeved black button up is super chic, because it's silk. That makes it fun, but I also find I rarely wear it because it seems fussy. I think a black oxford could be an equally chic option, especially if you roll the sleeves and layer delicate gold necklaces with it. I also love the idea of a fuzzy sweater with statement earrings.

FADED JEANS:

[show_shopthepost_widget id="3394392"]

What I really mean by faded jeans is vintage jeans. If you've been around here any amount of time, odds are you've seen me wear the jeans pictured above over and over. But for a lot of people, vintage jeans are hard to come by. They can be difficult to shop for online because the fit varies and it's hard to tell how old they really all. Thankfully, jean construction has come a long way in recent years and thick cotton, vintage-esque jeans aren't as hard to come by as they used to be.

The closest thing I've seen to vintage jeans are the Lindsey Jean by Esby. They are faded to the perfect shade of blue, have a shrunken fit and gorgeous copper rivets. However all that distressing comes with a price tag. The Lindsey Jean retails for $298.

The next closest thing I've seen - and can attest to from personal experience - are jeans by the brand AGOLDE. I recently bought the Remy High Rise Straight and the thick cotton, button fly and copper rivets remind me a lot of my vintage pairs. These are 99% cotton and 1% elastane, and, because the denim is thick, the stretch is barely noticeable. I had to wear them a few days to get them to loosen up and form to my body, just like the vintage pairs I own. I have the Wink wash which is a classic blue. AGOLDE also makes the Pinch Waist High Rise, and I think they are so cute. If I were in the market for a new pair of jeans, this is probably what I would buy. The wash is perfectly distressed and the kick flare cuts a great silhouette. I've seen the Riley High Rise Crop on a few people, and this one has a great vintage vibe too. The fit and the wash are slightly more understated than the Pinch Waist.

Lastly, ABLE has a few pairs of vintage-esque jeans. The Nelly Vintage is a mid-rise with a fitted shape and a straight, cropped leg. The fabric is light wash, lightweight, and is made from 75% cotton and 25% lyocell, which means a non-stretch fit in a super soft material. If you're looking for a little more visual interest, the Kenny Vintage has extra distressing, complete with a few strategically placed holes.

If vintage is what your heart truly desires, I suggest trying Etsy. If you're in the mood to dig, and study measurements, you could find a great option that works for you. I bought a pair off there a few years ago with decent success. They ended up being a little too big, so I spent $15 and had them taken in with great results.

BLACK PUMPS:

[show_shopthepost_widget id="3394391"]

Adding a heel to a pair of jeans is a great way to dress up a look. I am not much of a heels person so I prefer a low pump, two inches is usually my max. I like to be able to walk around with assurance I won't roll an ankle. Many women seem to be pros on tall heels. I am not one of those women, and I'm okay with that. I'm currently rocking the Day Heel in black suede in my shoe collection, and I've been really impressed with the fit and comfort of this shoe. I take it in a 10.5 (half size up from my normal shoe size). They have comfortably adjusted to my foot and are easy to walk in. I think the Square Toe Sling Back is super chic. If I worked in an office or needed heels on the regular I would own these. The Editor Heel is an elegant option for the graceful walker, and I love how exotic the Cono Mule is.

One more formula:

If jeans aren't your thing, a non-bodycon dress with heels is a great option. I've worn this dress by Hackwith Design on so many formal occasions now. It never disappoints and can be worn forward and backward. The Elliot Dress by Only Child would be a great option too!

I am not into buying one-time-use items to wear to holiday parties. I think the best outfits coordinate items you can wear over and over in a unique combination, or with standout accessories. Think: an oversized dress with a heel, or a basic shift dress with big artisan earrings. Most of all, when styling your holiday looks, I think it's super important to feel like yourself. And wearing items you already know and love will really help with that.

F A L L.

It's the most anticipated sartorial season of the year (for most people). Today's post isn't a forecast of trends or styles, but more of a personal forecast on what I'm looking forward to wearing, both in items and simple uniforms.

But first...

FALL STYLE GOALS:

1 // To get dressed each morning with ease.

2 // To keep a cohesive color palette in my outfits, feeling styled (not cluttered) amidst layers.

3 // On days I feel stuck (i.e.: getting dressed seems harder than it should), remember two key fall uniforms to fall back on. (More on those down below.)

WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO WEARING:

Kick Flare Jeans : - (pictured above, in olive) As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I bought a pair of these Reformation jeans, and I was thrilled to find this style in a length that works for my body type. Most often, cropped jeans are too short for me. These are just long enough that my ankles don't have to freeze in the winter. I love the shape of jeans that are wider at the bottom because they work well to balance out my upper body (wide shoulders). Everlane also makes a crop flare (in four shades). The 26.5" inseam was too short for me, but maybe it would be a good fit for you.

Chunky Sweaters: - (pictured L to R: ochre, cream waffle and handknit) Chunky sweaters have been popular for the last few years, and I am excited to keep wearing mine. Everlane gifted me the ochre sweater and, so far, the thick cotton knit looks good with all the jeans I've tried it on with. I bought the cream waffle knit sweater from Everlane last year (it's currently on sale!) for those extra cold days. The close-knit collar works wonders at keeping me warm while I watch the kids play on the playground after school. I currently have two handknit sweaters in my collection (besides the one I made) and they are real treasures for me. There is something about a sweater that is made slowly and with the very best fibers and design that makes it feel like an heirloom. I have a wool cardigan by L'envers and a cotton cardigan by Babaà.

Suede Boots: - (pictured) I had the loveliest pair of suede fast fashion boots a few years back, and they eventually got so torn up I had to part with them. Ever since, I've desired to add another pair back to my closet. The textured leather is a welcome change of pace amidst a sea of sensible, smooth leather winter shoes. I've been stalking out the brand Aquatalia, who makes waterproof suede booties. A reader introduced me to the brand awhile back, and I was reminded about them when Lee shared about the brand in her stories. I'm still hunting for my perfect pair, and I like that this brand offers waterproof suede, and that their boots are made in Italy. For those of you who have fewer weather restrictions, ABLE has some cute (and affordable) suede boot offerings, and Everlane still has their rust option for sale.

Hoop Earings: - (pictured in gold, and in tortoise) I can't get enough of hoop earrings lately. I know they are super trendy right now, but they are kind of classic at the same time. It makes me thankful I held on to a thin pair I bought several years ago, that I've recently brought out of the archives. Baleen Jewelry sent me a pair of gold hoops (pictured) last month, and I love them. I have worn them at least a dozen times or more in the last few weeks. They are perfect, 'barely there' in feeling, but eye-catching enough to augment a basic look. Obviously I am eyeing the tortoise pair too. Because how cute would those be with the outfit pictured?

Balloon Sleeves: - (pictured in sky blue) It looks like I'm getting sucked into all the trends lately. *Sigh* I couldn't pass on this opportunity to make myself feel beautiful in this ultra-feminine style top. It started when I bought one from Doên, and I became addicted to how I felt in that shirt. Recently I learned of the small maker Muumuu (thanks Erin!) and fell in love with her peasant top (pictured). It's made from thick linen and has the prettiest ties on the bottom of the sleeves. If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw that I already bought it in cream. If you're in the market to support a very new, emerging designer, this top is on sale through the end of the month. I also like this minimalist take on a balloon sleeve top.

Leather Bags: - (pictured in cognac and black) It's no secret I've been living in my vintage straw tote this summer. It simply fits the casual, (mostly) laid back vibe of summer, and makes almost all my summer clothing look better. But, I am excited to hook back up with my leather bags this fall. They felt a little too serious for summer, but I think they will be just the right amount of serious for fall. Everlane sent me their new Form Bag to test out and, honestly, it's prettier than I expected. It looked a little technical on their website because of the non-leather strap, but it comes off differently in person. I plan to put this bag to a field test - fancy talk for use it daily - for at least seven days in a row, see how I like it, and then decide whether it earns a permanent home in my closet. Results to come. The black bag pictured above I bought in March, and I'm a huge fan of it. It's simple, crossbody, and fits more than just my wallet. It also performs nicely in wet conditions.

Kamm Pants: - (pictured in Skintone 34) I'm looking forward to busting out my brown and navy pairs of these beloved, high-waisted, wide-leg pants. The thick fabric makes them too hot for summer time but fall is prime Kamm Pant weather. I look forward to pairing them with sweaters, both chunky, and fine, clogs and high rise tennis shoes.

Faded Black Denim: - (pictured) Ever since I laid eyes on Rachel Comey's slim legion pants in washed black I knew this denim shade was in my future. I didn't end up ordering that particular pair because the price point is quite high. Sometime later, I was thrilled to see washed black denim styles announced on Everlane's coming soon page. I bought myself a pair in the Cheeky Straight, in my usual Everlane denim size (27). I'll keep you posted!

Clog Boots: - (pictured) I bought these last fall, and they were my most worn pair of shoes over the cold months! Merging the comfort of clogs with the warmth of boots is genius. These have a lacquered base so they're extra handy in the rain. I waited years to pull the trigger on investing in these, and they were totally worth the wait.

Vintage Denim: - (not pictured) This probably goes without saying, but I am very excited to wear my favorite vintage jeans again. They make the most basic outfit look good. Plus they are super comfy because they've been worn in so much over the years.

TWO 'SAFETY NET' UNIFORMS:

Every fall, when we transition from simple summer dressing to mixing layers and staying warm, I tend to feel overwhelmed by the possibilities. Suddenly, getting dressed seems a lot trickier. This year my plan is to keep these two simple formulas in the back of my mind, to reference on those days when pulling together an outfit just isn't coming easily.

FORMULA 1 // Comfy (semi-cropped) jeans, chunky sweater, and ankle boots. If I want to dress up the look I might add pumps or smart flats .

FORMULA 2 // Same jeans, a layering sweater (like cashmere) or a cute crewneck sweatshirt, and hightop sneakers. Finished off with a 'third-piece' topper like this cotton canvas trench.

When shaping your fall closet in the coming months, it's good to consider how you want to feel in your clothes. I want to feel vibrant, beautiful and unfussy. These words go a long way in shaping the purchases I make. How do you want to feel in your clothes?

Werk. Werk.

It has been eleven(!!) years since I worked in a proper office environment. Before I had kids I worked in a newsroom, and later in PR and tourism marketing. I clearly remember the struggles I had to dress myself as a young professional. It was particularly hard to match my casual, outside-of-work style with what I thought professionals needed to wear (black polyester pants and stilettos). I felt like when I was going to work I was putting on a costume, instead of looks that represented me.

It’s very tricky being a woman in the professional world. I wanted to look the part, being polished and pulled together, without calling too much attention to my femininity, yet not being completely masculine. In other words, I didn’t want to dress just like a man, but I didn’t want people paying attention to me for the wrong reasons. Tricky waters to navigate. If you're a female professional in an office environment, I'd love to hear how you navigate this with your personal style.

If I could go back in time and tell early-20’s Andrea how to dress, I would urge her to search a little harder to find ways to be true to her personal aesthetic. To take the time and get the right pieces that make her heart sing a little, and not just check-the-box - black, polyester pants.

I've learned a little bit about how to style myself over the last decade (especially the last few years!). If I needed to reintegrate in a professional, office-based environment, I'd like to think I have a pretty good handle on how I'd dress.

1 // Classic White Top - I prefer an oxford fabric like this one. It's constructed for everyday wear, and masculine in cloth, but feminine in cut.

2 // Polka Dots - A relaxed button up with a subtle pattern is a great way to give professional basics (like pants) some visual interest without screaming, 'hey! look at me!' (which is definitely my M.O.). This top would be cute with either of the bottoms pictured, and either of those shoes too! And it would look pretty darn good buttoned all the way up, under a blazer.

3 // Black Pumps - Where were these shoes when I needed them? They are just as polished as the pointy-toed, pencil-heeled shoes I wore but with the ability to walk at a normal pace. I am even racking my brain to see if they fit any 'needs' in my life now. Super cute, super professional, super smart.

4 // Platform Oxfords - These make an impactful statement, and say 'hey, I'm stylish' but don't take over in a meeting. They would look amazing with both wide leg and slim fit pants.

5 // Gold Hoop Earrings - I stumbled across these the other day when I was looking up t-shirts on Reformation's site, and I realized I was spending more time eyeing the model's earrings than the T-shirts. They are small (1") yet thick, so they make a really nice, simple statement. The bonus for me: they are hollow, and lightweight with stud closures, so they don't wiggle (much).

6 // The Blazer - This is another one of those items that I reaaaaaaly wish I could justify in my real life, but it just doesn't make sense. But man, they look good on other people when I see them. This herringbone one is particularly attractive.

7 // Black Pants - These are the grown up version of those black polyester pants. These are chic, impactful and ultra functional. All the shirts featured here would work beautifully with these. (Even this cute reversible one, that I ran out of space for.) In a nutshell, Kamm pants make all things look good. At the office too. (And yes they will get comfortable. Buy the right size and give them time.)

8 // The Tapered Pant - I have seen these pants on enough people to know they are really flattering. The loose, but close cropped fit is a fresh option to choose over thigh-hugging work pants. These would be cute with just about everything pictured here. Think: polka dots and black pumps, or blush top and platform shoes, or mix those two up.

9 // High Neck Blouse - I love the color of this top, along with the texture from the pleats at the top. It feels like it would be a good option for when I would tire of button ups. I also really like blouses with big neck ties!

10 // Burgundy Satchel - I love the idea of a non-black bag for work (for life too). This one can be trapeze style, or rectangular if you fashion the inner snaps. FYI, it's not available till next month though.

And of course I would wear some of my favorite jumpsuits and dresses that are currently hanging in my closet. I think options like tencel and cupro make great work-friendly, easy-care fabric options for clothes. And I'd definitely wear my leather jacket with everything.

Sometimes I miss the challenge of styling myself for a professional environment and sometimes I don't. I'd love to hear what you wear to work!
