Affair of the Hair

Fall CapsuleHow often do you wash your hair?

Growing up, and pretty much always up until the last few years I washed my hair daily. Every. single. day. Why? I have always been the girl with greasy, stringy hair. Thanks to my head of fine, toddler-like tresses. When I discovered dry shampoo about two years ago, I felt like I got a new lease on life, and my mornings. Hello, washing/drying/styling hair every day takes way too much time! Figuring out I could wash my hair only every other day felt like the freedom of getting my drivers license all over again.

A few weeks ago I was getting my hair done and my amazing and talented stylist tipped me off about how she uses her dry shampoo – at night! She said sometimes she literally goes to bed with gray hair, but it’s always gone in the morning. Well, I wised up and took her advice, and WOW – what a difference it makes. Now I shampoo only every three days, and I could probably go longer, or at least to only 2x per week. And get this – I like my hair better on the “dirty” days, it isn’t nearly as flat!

I am pretty sure the oil production on my head has finally slowed down after all those years of daily washing. I am trying to start my kids young, I only wash their hair about once a week and it is never oily.

What about you? Any hair tips to share? Anyone do the “no-poo” method? I think my hair would be too brittle if I went that route. I currently use various shampoos and Bedhead conditioner but I am super curious to try out some of the Kerastase line. As for dry shampoo, I have tried several brands from cheap to expensive, and this one from Target is by far my fav!

The Outfit:

Fall Capsule-2

This look was inspired by Lee from the Style Bee.  Initially when styling these flares I kept thinking less volume and shorter tops, but I love the look she pulled off so much that I paired a few of my items in a new way to create a look I loved. My blouse is old by Bellatrix (USA made!) from Nordstrom Rack, but this is a great, current USA made option. My sweater is old Urban Outfitters, but when my kids are to a point where they are a little less rough on my clothes, I am going for cashmere like this. As for the boots, mine are by Aldo, but when they wear out I am considering these or these from Nisolo, but I can’t decide if the latter are too ‘hipster’ for me. Bag is from Madewell, but try this ethically made bag instead. Necklace by the talented Lauren of Loop Jewelry.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I have really similar to yours, its sounds like (mine is less fine, but definitely flat, straight and prone to greasiness) and I live on dry shampoo! putting it on at night is a life saver. I’ve been trying some new shampoos lately (OGX and Acure) and my second day hair was terrible, to the point where dry shampoo made it worse, so I’m back to my tried and true Tresseme! I’ll have to check out that Umberto dry shampoo, I’ve been using Dove but it’snot my favorite.

    1. The Umberto is pretty heard to beat for the price point! I tried Kevin Murphy dry shampoo, which was $30, and it didn’t last as long nor work as well! Good to know about the Tresseme. They are my go to for hairspray, but it’s been ages since I used the shampoo and conditioner.

  2. I wash my hair once a week (if I haven’t done anything out of the norm i.e. been swimming or hiking etc). I feel like my hair is a lot healthier now, though I’m not sure if that’s correlated to my washing routine. I usually wash it on the 5th or 6th day.

    Nat • Dignifiable

    1. I have heard that before Natalie, that hair starts getting thicker/shinier/stronger/longer etc when it isn’t washed so much.

Did you have to work up to washing only once per week?

  3. I wash my hair 2 times a week and use dry shampoo in between. I just use Dove dry shampoo or good old baby powder. I’ll have to try it at night! Thanks for the tip. In 2012 I went no-poo for 3 months. If I were the kind of person who would wet my hair daily and used a vineger rinse, I think it would have gone better. My hair is so thick, wetting or washing it every day is a pain, so it looked gross most of the time. :-/ So I went back to shampoo, but only wash twice a week. I rairly use conditioner, but I don’t color my hair and only style it with heat occasionally, so it doesn’t need it often.

I love your flares! I ended up not getting a pair this season…..too much money spent elsewhere, but I still want a pair! Love the look you pulled together!

  4. I tried the baking-soda/vinegar route once. I think I made it about 3 days before I was too grossed out to continue. I would love not to wash everyday, especially on mornings like today where we all slept through alarms, I still had to walk the dog and 30 minutes to shower/wash/dry before running for the bus/school run, is just not enough time. My hair is fine, but I have a lot of it, and it’s above my shoulders so a ponytail kinda just looks weird on those rushed mornings.
I almost bought a bottle dry shampoo a few weeks ago, this may be just the push I need to Do It. (love the outfit! and the more ethical options you included)

  5. I have super-duper fine hair that used to get greasy fast, but I’ve pretty much gone shampoo-free now, and it’s totally adjusted. I use Wen cleansing conditioner 1-2 times a week, and dry shampoo almost daily (I’ve tried many, and landed on Batiste as the overall most effective–and cheap). The adjustment phase lasted months for me, and involved a lot of hats and extra dry shampoo, but I think it’s been totally worth it.

    1. Fascinating Lo! I’d love to hear more. And I’ve actually heard about Wen before, sounds like it was totally worth the price? Did you just swtich cold turkey one day? How many months did the adjustment phase last? And how did you know it was just “phase” at the time?

      1. I made the change pretty gradually over about 4 months, using more and more dry shampoo as I went longer and longer between shampoos, and then I replaced the shampoo to Wen. Because I now don’t use it that often (although you do have to use a large amount when you do use it), I have found it lasts forever even though it seems expensive up front.

  6. Ok so first I LOVE Lee over over at Style Bee- I live for her unique combinations and clean colors and lines. True quality minimalism.

Second- dry shampoo should be named the invention of the decade and possibly the century I realize this I probably premature because it’s only 2016, but unless they cure cancer, my vote goes to dry shampoo. I went from rigidly washing my hair every other day to going 4 days between washes thanks to a shorter cut and dry shampoo. It has, as it seems for many people, changed my hair game and earned my undying love and loyalty!

    1. Seriously, Lee is the best, right? Her execution of all things style is spot on.

HA!! A love letter to dry shampoo – I love it!!!

  7. What a good idea to put it on at night! I used to use a dry shampoo made especially for brunettes but it was still lighter than my natural color so I ended up with a powdered wig look nonetheless. I use cornstarch or cocoa powder now so putting it on at night is even more crucial. Thanks for the tip!
