One of the beauties of being a part of an online community of like-minded people – folks like you who value style and ethics – is the ability to share ideas and encourage one another.

When I first styled this dress and asked for feedback, Anne commented that she would style this striped shirt dress open as a duster. Ding! A little light bulb turned on in my head when I read her comment, and I mentally logged it for the future. And voila! A new look re-imagined with simple pieces from my closet.

I’ve said it a hundred times: I love when function meets design, aka, if my articles of clothing are well chosen, I can wear them over and over again in new ways. There is something so satisfying about getting your money’s worth out of your clothes. I think that is why I tend to overthink my purchases. I want to really make sure the item I’m picking is the right one.

One little clue I’ve picked up in the process of deciding whether to buy something – I pay attention to how it makes me feel about my current closet. If the item in consideration has my mind immediately reeling with the possible items I would like to buy to go with it, I put the brakes on and re-evaluate. On the contrary, if the potential purchase leads to instinctive outfit planning with items from my current closet, then I know I’m probably on the trail to something good.

Hope your long weekend was restful!

xo,
Andrea

  1. Brilliant. I absolutely love this. (And I’m currently picturing my closet trying to figure out if I’m missing an awesome possibilities like this.)

  2. Love it! Especially the idea of wearing pieces in different ways.

On another note, I ordered a few Everlane tees after reading your reviews and am so happy with them – the Uneck is my dream tee. I don’t know why I didn’t think to do it before because I’ve been a long time customer of Everlane, but sometimes a little nudge is necessary. Thanks so much.

    1. Yay!!!! So glad I could help. Agreed, the modern fit of the u-neck is so good! It’s like a plain tee, but a little bit stylish. I love it. I’ve been wearing mine for more than two years now! I still have the same white one I started with. I know what you mean. Sometimes it helps to see something on someone else before you notice it.

  3. This looks so cool. I also love wearing shirt dresses this way.
I think the tips for deciding whether to buy something is great!
I thought that wide pants were perfect for everything in my closet, so I got two pairs, but now one is hanging in my closet, because I feel like they need new shoes…
Or maybe I just feel I need new shoes for everything this fall. Oxford’s / Loafers are haunting my dreams.. Cannot decide whether it’s a fling or a love.

    1. Johanne, you are so good at wearing your dresses over pants, I love it. Probably because it is colder there?

Oh man, I know! It’s so hard sometimes to know whether I am falling for a trend, or falling for something because I just love it. If I give myself some time, the truth usually reveals itself. Good luck!

  4. I love this outfit! It looks great on you. I am curious to try something similar this fall, thanks.
