Winds of Change

These pants are probably one of my most exciting and most risky closet additions for the fall.

I was spending time browsing Backtalk several weeks back, with the idea of wide leg pants rolling faintly around my mind, when I spotted these on their very curated racks. I fell in love with them as soon as I tried them on, even though they were probably the most daring thing I’d tried on in awhile. I liked them so much I almost impulse-purchased them on the spot. But then I remembered my self-control and walked away. However, I immediately began overthinking whether I needed them in my closet or not.

After too much some analyzing, I determined they made many outfits with what is already in my closet, and I pulled the trigger about a week later. I ended up ordering them straight from the designer, to get them in a slightly darker denim color.

Now, who’s going to make fun of me for wearing them everyday? Though they are stretching me outside my comfort zone, they feel like home everytime I put them on.

This is the beginning of the end of skinny jeans. (For me at least.)

This denim-silhouette-shakeup has been a long time coming (speaking broadly now). Skinny jeans may have ruled for the last decade or more, but everywhere I look now, it’s straight leg crops, demi boot cut crops, flares, wide leg galore.

I think some of it has to do with the waning interest in wearing boots over jeans. Without that visual weight at the bottom, sometimes skinny jeans can start to look unbalanced. A little outturn at the hem of a pant (like this or this) can create instant balance to a look.

What do you think? Do you think it’s the end of skinny ruling the roost?

Cheers to the weekend!

Andrea

  1. This is one of my favorite looks, ever! You look flawless, I love the silhouette, and everything is perfection. Killing it, lady!

  2. I know skinnies are dying but I am FAR from giving them up. They work with my more conservative style and honestly, I just think they flatter me more than a wider leg! Maybe one day I’ll switch it up ;) These look amazing on you!

  3. I read your post on Sunday and listed to the video about the skinny jean/wide leg and how the fashion industry wants us to buy stuff so they need this to change! What do you think about that?! It made me feel kind of yucky – like the fashion industry controls me and my money and even contentment!

    1. I was definitely thinking about that article when I wrote this. Great point! It is a little weird and yucky feeling. I think I definitely need to be careful to let a new shape in my wardrobe not “necessitate” the addition of many other things. That is definitely what the industry wants. I guess if I am going to update and adapt to changes (only if I love them!) I need to do it very mindfully.

I guess what we need to beware of is, who is influencing us, and how much or little we let ourselves be influenced.

      Thanks for bringing that up!!

  4. Can’t help it but for me, skinny jeans are still ruling my wardrobe (when I wear jeans that is) I’ve tried on straight leg and proper boyfriend cuts and they looked just terrible on my shape. Even though I’m not a small size, I prefer tighter trousers, because when I have something loose on I feel like it makes me look even bigger. So I’d rather just confess to the shape I’ve got than pretend it’s something else.
I was thinking the other day, it must be a lot harder to hone in on your style when you’re skinny, because everything is made for you and suits you :D For me, only a select number of styles/cuts make me look good so it’s perhaps a bit easier to get to know what my style is haha. Although that may be the only upside.

Hope you’re well Andrea, I’ve not been around for a while and I think these wide legs definitely suit you. I dare say I prefer the silhouette to flares!

    1. Hi Kat! As always, I love your introspective feedback!

I think it’s so helpful to identify what you love and feel good in. I don’t know if I’m totally breaking up with skinny jeans, but maybe favoring a jean slim but not so tight around the ankle. We’ll see!

I hope you are well! I always love following your adventures on Instagram.

  5. I think it’s time to diversify our wardrobes with wide leg or tapered slightly looser leg but I don’t think it is the end end of skinny jeans. I also think those pants would look amazing with a mock neck long sleeve tucked in all the way around or with a boxy crop top that hangs loose. Very nice purchase!

    1. Hi Michelle! Thanks for the nice words!
Perhaps skinny jeans will still be around but I see them getting a little straighter over the next few years. It will be fun to see how things pan out. But perhaps a well-tailored skinny jeans will always be a closet staple??

  6. Love this outfit! During the Summer and Spring I tried out less skinny pants and really loved it, but I don’t see the skinny style dying out around where I live during the Fall and Winter. Being in the mountains, everyone still wears taller boots over their pants for about 6 months of the year. It’s not practical to try and wear just booties when the snow is three feet high! I think that the skinny jean is a lifesaver for winter outfits, but I really like breaking out the less tight styles when the weather warms up!

    1. Great perspective! It really is a weather thing! It’s still not terribly cold here yet, but it will be interesting to see what the prevailing styles are when it gets too cold for bare ankles.

  7. I think there will be a period where both styles are popular, a transition period of sorts. I love the updated styles and wider legs.. I find them more flattering on my shape. I do like the denim styles seems to stick around longer than other trends, so I’ll search for a pair or two I love and wear them for the next decade!😊

  8. Thank god skinnies are almost over (Oh, I hope, I hope!). I adore a wider leg silhouette and have also always loved straight flares (as opposed to “bootcut”). I think tight or fitted clothing can be a short cut to looking “put together” (whatever that means) and looser shapes necessitate a taking a keener eye toward the entire fit of the outfit. Which is admittedly difficult. I often think something looks lovely in the mirror but when I see a photo of myself I find that it looks very oversize (I am very small, at 5’1). It’s hard to get the fit right, but I’m convinced this is what makes any cut of pant look great. This looks lovely on you, and I covet it! Plus, I always hated how skinny jeans were tight on my calves and ankles, so now I am rejoicing!

    1. Thanks Julia! I’m with you on the tight-calved pants, lets depart from that! I have bigger calves too, so all skinny jeans hug me way too much in that area. I’m looking forward to wearing more jeans that look a little less painted on.

Great point about tight clothes. Looser fits do take a bit more consideration!

  9. I love these pants and they look great in you. I love how they are reminescent of the late 60’s and early 70’s photos of my grandma who had great and daring taste, and at the same time super modern and chic. A timeless and confident addition to your wardrobe for sure!
