Wearing Lately: Feeling Lost

That title might be a bit dramatic, but it sums up how I’ve been feeling about my style the last week or so. I have been struggling to pull together outfits I love, and have been stumbling through color parings/groupings.

I’m pretty sure the reason is two-fold, 1) I had a 10×10 style challenge hangover and  2) I inadvertently bought too many new items at once.

It’s pretty natural for me to feel a bit confused when I get back to accessing my whole closet after styling myself from a handful of items for almost two weeks. The endless combinations can be overwhelming. Usually though, I find a way to take what I’ve learned and apply it to my closet moving forward. And I did, but reason number two loomed large.

Confession time: I think I added too many new items at once, and it’s thrown off my internal sense of style. I bought my Sevilla Smith Booties, a linen duster and two pairs of jeans in a relatively short time frame. (The boots I bought ahead of time, but since they are made to order they arrived around the same time the duster and jeans did). Trying to integrate those four items into my wardrobe at once has thrown my styling game way off. I suspect the main reason is that they are all a bit different than what I normally wear. The boots are shorter shafted than I’m used to. The jeans are both full length, which is something I haven’t worn in a long time, and again throwing my styling off. One of the pairs I chopped to be slightly cropped, and I intend to do the same with the other pair later this week. But meanwhile I’ve been wearing my jeans long and/or cuffed, something I don’t normally do and it doesn’t feel like me. The last item – the duster – is closer to what I normally wear but, like most new items, styling it has come with a bit of a learning curve.

The takeaway? I should have been much slower in my purchases, adding only one or two at a time instead of four would have been a much better idea.

Here’s what I’ve been wearing…

Esby DusterEsby Duster

Baronne Duster (M), Esby (sadly this is nearly sold out, but I’ve seen a few versions around including this one and similar versions from this shop) | Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar) | Levis, thrifted (super similar in a high rise) | Booties, Frye (purchased FW ’15) | Jacqui Bag, c/o Jacqui |  Slice Hoops, c/o Baleen

Remember these booties? It’s been a minute since I’ve worn them! I don’t think I wore them once last winter. I felt inspired to wear them this week, and it makes me very thankful I wasn’t hasty in getting rid of them when they collected dust last year. I felt they were a little intense, with the dark black leather and edgy trimmings, but this week, that’s what I was craving.

Overall, I really like the way this outfit came together.

Cardigan no18 (one size), Babaá Knitwear | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Sailor Pants, (8 -runs small), Jesse Kamm | Cons, Thrifted (similar, made in the USA) Form Bag, c/o Everlane

I was feeling pretty good in this outfit too. Basically I’m happy whenever I wear brown, ha! And wide legs and converse. Always at home in these items.

Elizabeth Suzann Clyde Trench

Clyde Trench (S), Elizabeth Suzann | Waffle Knit Sweater (M), Everlane | High Rise Straight Jean, AGOLDE | Boots, Loeffler Randall, no longer available (very similar, super cute too) | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana

Here is one of the aforementioned jeans. I wanted a long-ish straight leg jean. Something to wear on the coldest of days and actually have my ankles stay warm. These are by AGolde, and I’m really impressed with the quality of them. They feel like true vintage jeans with the ever so slightest bit of stretch. Wearing them for a few days in a row loosened them up in all the right places. However, I do not like them cuffed like this. It took me wearing them all week to pinpoint that.

Baronne Duster (M), Esby | Lazlo Jumpsuit (M), c/o REIFhaus Use code LAZLO15 to save 15% off Lazlo Jumpsuit styles by REIFhaus | Paloma Mule (10), c/o Nisolo | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana

I had a rare night out last week for a lovely Friendsgiving hosted by Parachute. The folks from Parachute were so nice, and the food was amazing. Of course I was excited to pair some of my fall favorites all at once. I loved this look.

Side note: when we were restocking our linens last summer we invested in Parachute sheets and towels. I’m a big fan of the way this company is dedicated to responsible manufacturing using the highest quality materials from around the world. Our sheets are incredibly soft and our towels are thick and luxurious. But my very favorite part is probably the beautiful, muted color palettes!

Baronne Duster (M), Esby | Alpaca Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Levis, thrifted (super similar in a high rise) | Boots, Loeffler Randall, no longer available (very similar, super cute too) | Jacqui Bag, c/o Jacqui | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

When I bought this duster I pictured myself styling it with lighter tones and not so much black. But I can’t seem to get away from styling it with black. I have mixed feelings about this look, I think I missed the mark on the color palette.

Claude Cardigan (S/M), L’envers | British Tee, c/o Zappos | High Rise Straight Jean, AGOLDE | Booties, Sevilla Smith (41, 2cm heel) | Jacqui Bag, c/o Jacqui | Padlock Pendant, c/o Aide-Mémoire | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

I almost didn’t share this outfit because I do not feel like it belongs in a highlight reel. This is where I lost my way a bit last week. I love all the individual pieces in this outfit, just not together. I think a good start would be a nice raw edge on these jeans instead of the cuff, and then maybe an oversized sweater, or something with a more interesting shape on top.

Sienna Beanie, kit c/o We Are Knitters | Alpaca Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation | Clog Boots (42), No.6 (similar) | Initial Necklace, Nashelle

Feeling that dark color palette again, but mostly out of necessity! All my warmest shoes seem to be black or brown.

A quick note on this sweater. Everlane sent me one of their Alpaca Oversized Sweaters, and I can’t seem to stop wearing it. It’s ultra cozy. But what I love is that they finally made a sweater for people who don’t want to wear straight lines all the time. This sweater has lots of gentle curves including slouchy, tapered sleeves and a snug waist band that sits on my hips (in this photo I have it partially tucked). I just wish their color ways were a bit more organic-inspired. I would have swooned over anything in the white/cream/tan/mocha department. Instead this sweater comes in charcoal, pink, orange, heather blue, light gray and the black I’m wearing. (The heather blue is really pretty.) If any of those colors speak to you, run and buy this sweater now. You will love it! It’s so soft, and so warm. Big fan of alpaca here!

And there’s the honest truth about what I’ve been wearing lately. Hopefully next time I’ll have a better report! Cheers to you as you tackle staying warm and stylish.

  1. Okay so I know I’m probably late to the party here, but I found your blog and instagram and I feel like I have just found my new favorite blogger… Your style and content are amazing!! I literally want to wear all your outfits (and PS we are the same size shoe… not many of us out there that want to wear size 42 clog boots!!!). And I’m so happy to see thrifted items along with higher end ones – that’s how I like to dress myself, with a little bit of both. Just thank you, I am excited to follow along and look through all your older posts!! xo Ella

    1. Hi Ella, welcome, and thank you! You know how to make a girl feel good! =) I don’t thrift as much as I used to. I used to have such good luck in the past, but lately I seem to need more time/be in the mood for a good hunt! I love vintage too, it’s sooo fun. I am so happy to have you here, big foots unite!

      1. P.S. After seeing it on you, I totally bought the Everlane Alpaca Sweater when they sent me a holiday coupon… it is THE BEST. I am in love. I will be wearing it as many days a week as I can!

  2. I loved all the looks with your jeans cuffed! Also from last post when you reviewed sweaters. I totally respond to photos with cuffed jeans bc I realize that’s what I personally feel most “me” in. Ha! The weather change has thrown me for a loop with my style. Thanks for posting…love the inspiration!

    1. That is too funny Christy! I cut them today, so :( sadly you probably won’t ever see them cuffed again. But I am a much happier camper. Agreed on the weather change – that is definitely a factor!!

  3. Could you explain how you determine what length is good to crop your jeans at? Just cuffing them under and looking in the mirror till you like it? (And do you leave any allowance for fraying or do anything specific to keep them from fraying too much?) I have a couple pairs that I know that needs to happen to, but I’m so nervous to just pull out my scissors and cut…

    1. I always get a little nervous before I cut too Anna. But I like to wear them a handful of times so I can get a sense of where I want them. I’ve found a pretty sweet spot where I like my pants to hit – about an inch above my ankle. Before I cut I cuff them under and try on a few of my most worn shoes just to be sure. After that I use a tape measure from the bottom of the hem to make sure it’s even. I mark with chalk and use sharp scissors to cut. I don’t really worry about allowing for the fraying too much because it doesn’t seem to eat into the length noticeably. Happy cutting – you’ve got this!

  4. You look amazing in all these looks and everything is styled to perfection! You are way too hard on yourself. Looking good, lady!

  5. I don’t like wearing my dark jeans cuffed either, but I will happily cuff the ligher washed ones. I think it’s the contrast between the right side and wrong side of the denim. I have a problem with wearing black and white together too, but ivory seems to be OK.

    1. So interesting Sophie, I think you make a great point, it’s that visual contrast that makes the difference. I am the same way, I almost never wear black and white together, but I will do cream and black. Great observation!

  6. Oh yes. I always feel similar when I buy all new things at once! I think that’s why the capsule wardrobe strategy of buy everything then nothing never worked for me…
