HAPPENING:
What do you guys think of Starbucks’ new straw ban? Some say it’s an environmental milestone, others say it’s missing the point, and now disability rights groups are taking issue with the ban.
It’s that time of year, when bloggers and Instagrammers everywhere start their unending stream of posts about the Nordstrom sale. This year, the feeling around the sale is decidedly different. There seems to be a bit of a rebellion, as folks are tired of the overconsumption that appears to happen because of the sale. I am quietly ‘muting’ some of the folks I follow on Instagram until the sale is over, and have decided not to link to items this year. Do you still shop the Nordstrom sale?
STYLE:
Who wore it best? Meghan Markle and Emma Watson wore matching pants to Wimbledon, one taking a fashion risk, and one playing it safe.

FYI: tomorrow (July 16th) Everlane is restocking the Day Glove. If the mocha color has been on your wish list, it’s finally coming back!
LIFE:
A very peaceful, Chicago apartment tour.
Five AirBnB’s to stay in at Joshua Tree – number two is giving me all the feels, and now I’m jones’ing for a trip down there!
ON S+S:
I recently published a long format Q&A video to my IGTV channel. It was fun to share a little more about myself, awkward moments and all!
Did you see my piece about Hackwith Design’s new Sustain Shop? It’s a fabulous new way to ‘upcycle’ your old HDH pieces. Right now through Thursday, save 10% on everything in the shop (and the rest of HDH!) with the code: FORSALTREADERS.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Nordstrom sale. I love buying some of my favorite items on sale if I need them (leggings, bras, blankets, etc.) and I love adding a few fun new items to my wardrobe in general, but I hate the nonstop blogger shill. It almost makes me feel gross to shop the sale because of how much it’s hyped up…and honestly, it’s not THAT great of a sale. It’s good but not as amazing as they make it seem. The bloggers I read regularly and care about the most don’t post about the sale (or they might post about it once), and they’re the ones in which I actually want to see what they would buy! Ha.
Kimi, I am totally with you on this one. The constant posting about it gives me a weird feeling too, and then it makes me feel like I’m missing some sort of boat by not constantly pushing the sale myself. And ditto to the later part too!!
I don’t have strong sale feelings either way. I like Nordstrom as a company because of their customer service. I’ll support the sale if something I need is significantly marked down.
I agree that the straw ban is missing the point, but I am all for reducing single-use plastic. People like an easy solution.
I agree, Nordstrom is a great company. I just am a little tired of the hype around the sale. Which comes from bloggers and the platforms they (we) are a part of.
As for the straw, you’re right, I think people do like an easy solution! I just hope people continue to reduce, instead of replacing plastic straws with something else.
Agreed on the Nordstrom sale! I’ve searched through the offerings and selected a couple of things to purchase once the sale opens up to non-cardholders, but I won’t be too sad if anything sells out before I can get to it. I’m way over the incessant harping on the sale’s glories – the deals just aren’t *that* good.
I loved your IGTV Q+A, by the way! It’s refreshing to see video content that isn’t overly-produced, and feels natural. Keep them coming!
Have a great week!
Hi Krystal – thank you for your nice comment about my video!! It was fun to do. :) I have another one planned for later this week. :)
I was delighted to see the straw ban, and Starbucks will offer paper straws upon request, so people who need them will still have access. It’s a baby step toward dealing with our massive plastic problem, but it is certainly better than nothing. Now if people would just bring their own cups and lobby for fishing companies to mark their gear (learned something new in that article!). :-)
Here, here! Thanks for the comment Courtney.
The Nordstrom sale is my time to usually add a pair of boots to my closet – I bought 2 pairs 2 years ago during their sale that have been worn constantly. They’re waterproof, cute booties, and I’ll probably add a different style by the same brand this year. But everything else isn’t worth it to me.
If memory serves me correct, they usually have great deals on Frye boots!
I don’t buy from the Nordstrom’s sale – too much temptation and also I tend to buy things that I do not need. I am trying to weed out the clothing I have and stopped buying at their sale approximately 6 years ago. I am all for classic clothing and SLOW fashion.
If I need some bras, yes, I will buy, but usually I can find the bras that I need (albeit in a wilder color) at Nordstrom Rack for a better price than during the Nordstrom sale.
Bras are one of the trickiest items to source for me! Glad you’ve found a way to get some that you like at a good price.
I shop Nordstrom primarily for beauty, so when I heard the sale was coming up, I checked in just to see if my usual sunscreen or dry shampoo would be discounted. Alas, they weren’t, so now I feel like I can put my blinders on, but I think purely practical purchases are always worth checking out sales for.
Sounds like you’ve found a good way to navigate the sale and make it serve you, rather than the other way around!
I’m so glad you brought up the Nordstrom sale. In the past, I was always pretty excited about this sale but when I think back, I can’t remember one piece that I still have and like to wear. This year, I received the catalogue and for the first time, was not interested in anything. When I’ve visited the store recently, I couldn’t help but notice all of the waste and over consumption. It is such a relief – although I still am struggling with obsessing over different items now – like Elizabeth Suzann or Ace & Jig. I spend so much time on fretting over sizing and fit because it is not as easy to purchase such big ticket items and having to wait so long to receive.
Ditto – relief is the exact right word for finally not being interested in fast fashion. (And also ditto fretting over ES sizing. But c’est la vie!)
OH man! Yes, it’s like swapping one obsession for the other, I know exactly what you mean!! I think I’m in the same boat. Both things can consume way too much time and energy in we’re not careful. Good luck with your information gathering!
I purchased two things from the sale last year that I loved but many more I didn’t. I already decided that I’m not ordering anything this year. Agree with the commenter above that the deals really aren’t that great.
As for the straws, I think they should let people request them if they need them. I have been ordering the Cascara drink that comes with the sip top and have questioned whether it really takes that much less plastic to make it or the little green stopper for the hot drinks either.
Interesting! I hadn’t thought about that!!
I always love reading your rundowns Andrea (even if I can’t get to them until a week later… *insert eye roll emoji here*)! You always link to the best and most insightful things. Thank you so much for including me in this week’s links — truly an honor! : )
Aw, thanks for the nice comment Laura! Excited for your sweet baby, soon to come!!
