This summer I’ve been spending time browsing some of my favorite style blogs and I am definitely seeing some recurring themes and trends. That is part of the fun of immersing myself in the ‘blog-o-sphere.’ I just love seeing what others are wearing. While I’ve been busy styling myself in a wardrobe of clean lines and simple colors, I’ve almost missed the 70’s-slightly-bohemian trend that is showing up all over streets and computer screens. I love this soft, feminine look, and here is how I would incorporate into my minimalist-vibe wardrobe.
1) The Flare, as seen here, here and here. I think we’ve all been on the fence for a year or so in regards to whether this late 90’s/early 2000’s favorite is on the return. Now, I am definitely going with YES. I have seen it in denim and white, lots of white. It creates a beautiful and elegant silhouette that is a sharp change from all our beloved skinny jeans. Not that skinny jeans are going anywhere soon! Right now I think flares are mostly a complementary look in the jeans/pants department. If they are going to takeover, I predict it will be at least another two years away. [shop it: 1, 2]
2) Off the Shoulder, as seen here, here and here. Full disclosure: I am a little bit self-conscious about my square shoulders, so I am not sure if I would actually try this one, but I love how relaxed it looks, and how it adds a touch of whimsy. [shop it: 1, 2]
3) Fringe, as seen here and here. For my no-fuss style, I would pair a fringed-item with very streamlined or basic supporting pieces. I’d wear a fringed top for the 4th of July with cutoffs for a chill look, or with dark denim and clogs for a more dressed up look. I could also forget the shirt and go for a sweet fringed-bag.
4) The 70’s wedge/clog, as seen here, here and here. Just as excited as I was that Birkenstocks came back, I think I am equally excited about the return of the clog! I have been drooling over the handmade clogs of this San Francisco company via Instagram for awhile now. Some day! [shop it: 1, 2]
5) The Culotte, as seen here, here, and here. I am definitely late to the party on this trend (as I so often am), but I am sold on these cuties. They’re not just for Mennonites in PE class anymore, they are for you and me. Very chic and, again, I love the silhouette. [shop it: 1, 2]
As a child of the 70s I feel the nostalgia, but the fashion can be TOUGH for my figure. I need a little structure to make my shape make sense so too much boho is no bueno. But the flare thing has been on my mind, and I have the same thought – are flares really any different from the boot cut jeans of the 90s? Because I found a pair of those in storage and am thinking I may try my hand at meshing that 70s rock vibe with something a bit more modern and still figure-friendly….
Great points Maggie! For awhile I was bemoaning parting ways with my Citizens of Humanity flares of yester-year, but I realized if I were to wear flares today, I’d rather have them be high-waisted. The ones I had before we quite low. But that could totally not matter with the right top…
I have tried all of these trends except for the culottes trend. But I really want to try that trend too!

I may get a pair of flares this fall if the budget can handle it. I plan on investing in a quality pair of skinnies, too, so we shall see!
Happy hunting Rebecca!
