When it comes to getting dressed, generous proportions make me happy. Something about all that extra fabric just makes me feel feminine, and I like it. Which is funny because I could wear skirts and dresses if I wanted to feel that way, but I don’t often do that in the winter. Something about tights just feels fussy to me and, since I spend most of my days at home, fuss-free usually wins.
I think what I like about generous proportions is that they are often unexpected. Which, in turn, makes them more fun and creative.
For example:
Baggy jeans when everyone else is wearing skinny jeans, mix baggy jeans with a baggy sweater and it sits nicely in contrast to delicate shoes. The same outfit constructed with the presence of distressed skinny jeans would have been a lot more predictable and a little less interesting.
Slouchy pockets make this outfit. Without them this look would be more ordinary than it would be “street style.”
Oversized blouse meets tidy a-line mini. The generous top would look great paired with almost anything: culottes, boyfriend jeans, work pants, high-waisted shorts, you name it. Roomy through the back, it hints at menswear and the wide sleeves give an unexpected bloom around the arms. The outfit looks simultaneously delicate and masculine.
A Baggy sweater topped with a boyfriend denim jacket make an otherwise serious black mini feel as cozy as venturing out in your favorite flannel shirt. Baggy on baggy says “effortless” even though the sharp shades and purse say “pulled together.”
Some other proportions to consider… culottes and a tunic (shown here), a wide crop top over a dress (shown here), long dress and long sleeves (shown here), a cocoon dress (shown here).
How do you like your proportions? Have you settled on a go-to formula and do you like to bend the rules?
Cheers,
Andrea
I adore oversized blouses and roomy tees!
Me too Daisy! Sometimes I even borrow from my husband!
I love big knits! They just look better when the’re oversized. Playing around with proportions is so fun to do and definitely adds an interesting touch to an outfit. I always try to keep at least one ‘skinny’ element in my outfits though – like a skinny jeans or a pair of feminine sandals.

Yes, oversized big knits just seem fun! Yes, I agree it is usually good to have an element of skinny, or show a bit of skin – like ankle! ;)
I tend to gravitate towards oversized tops and fitted bottoms, but sometimes I’ll go wild and switch things up… ;)
Yep! Me too! Living on the edge ;)
