In a little over a week it’s Dad’s turn to get his time in the spotlight. I’m so thankful to have a partner who helps in all things around the home, and is an awesome person to raise a family with. We love the chance to take a day and spoil him. It usually involves watching ships on the Columbia River at our favorite brewery, and some cool, coastal weather. This year Mr. Seasons gets a trip to Disneyland, but that’s a story for a whole separate blog post!
While Mr. Seasons loves experiences, he also enjoys a well-selected gift. Today, I asked him to join me on the blog to share his top gift ideas. We hope this helps you shop for your dad or spouse, or special father-type figure in your life.
This post is in partnerships with Dick’s Sporting Goods, our family’s go-to spot for all things sports, home gym, camping and outdoors-related. (We also love getting our shoes there!)
Hi! Kevin here (aka S+S editor-in-chief and mid-afternoon coffee barista) and I’m honored to get a crack at picking some items for this post. I am usually content with a good hazy IPA and a tasty meal with the family, but for this, I thought about what would be a nice gift to give or receive. And I have to admit, it was more fun than I expected.
1 // VRST Men’s Merino Wool Jogger – I am a verrrry late adopter. When joggers started showing up I didn’t know what to think. But I’m here for it now. I’m not sure if it’s the work remote season of COVID where cozy trumps dressy or that sweatpants no longer look like pajamas but are actually stylish. I could see wearing these as I drop the kids off in the morning, work through the day, or head out for an impromptu dinner date with Andrea.
2 // Reef Men’s Marbea Synthetic Leather Sandals – My flip flops from 2013 just filed for social security and it’s time to upgrade. These Reefs are a perfect update and cover the bases on comfy summer wear while still looking good. These would be great on the back deck while I BBQ or walking up to the community pool when the summer heat finally hits.
3 // Patagonia Men’s P-6 Label Traditional Hat – I think I wore a hat every day in high school. It was a beat-up Trail Blazers hat. Then I joined the Army and kind of fell out of wearing hats other than when required in uniform. Now that I’m retired, I’ve started wearing hats again and I’m working on my collection. This Patagonia cap would be a great addition as an easy throw-on and its simple, clean look would work with just about anything.
4 // Nike Men’s Air Force 1 ’07 Shoes – I’ll admit, I’ve been influenced by my wife and eldest daughter. They have the all-white Air Force 1s and, while that’s tempting, I want a pop of color in my life. These hit just right and, having tried them on, they’re really comfortable too. These are all-around sneakers for shorts, jeans or even chinos (still coming to terms on tube socks being in again…)
5 // Altec Lansing ComfortQ Active Noise Cancelling Headphones – I love surrounding myself with sound. But sometimes, I just want to listen to a Conan Needs a Friend podcast or the latest Weezer album (which come out about every three months these days) without also hearing everything else. Every dad (or mom really) needs their own cone of silence from time to time.
6 // Solo Stove Ranger Fire Pit – Yes. Just yes. We love our deck and this would make hanging out on it more enjoyable on those cooler Spring and Fall nights.
7 // Coleman Forester Series Sling Chair – Watching my kids play soccer is one of my favorite weekend activities. I’m not sure how much I’d sit (I like to pace) but this would be perfect. Or, pair this with the Solo Stove above and hang with my Scotch tasting crew.
8 // Altec Lansing Baby Boom XL Bluetooth Speaker – We listen to a lot of music in our family and this would be an excellent add-on to our back deck activities, hanging out on the beach, or just to up our podcasting game when Andrea and I are working out. I also love that this is waterproof. I mean, we live in Oregon. Even on sunny days, waterproof needs to be an option.
9 // Victory Tailgate Rosewood Premier 2X4 Cornhole Set – We have a cornhole set but I wish we’d seen this one first. If you’re getting a cornhole set, get a good one. Not one of those vanilla ones with the bags that puff chalk all over you. I mean, this one is just nice to look at.
10 // Fitness Gear Cast Hex Dumbbell- Single – The home gym is one of the best things to come out of the COVID quarantine. If you’ve built up your own gym, you know that weights can add up so buying them as you need them is ideal. And, it’s still cheaper than signing up for a gym membership you use for a month but pay for 12.
11 // YETI 14 oz. Rambler Mug with MagSlider Lid – Andrea has this and I steal it whenever I can. I’m convinced someone found a downed UFO and used material from the wreckage to make these Yeti mugs. Coffee stays hot but the cup is cool. I think we have an entire cupboard of attempted coffee tumblers but only reach for this one. Time to get a second one!
If you need more ideas, check out Dick’s Father’s Day gift ideas at $25 and $50 price points. AND, my favorite Dick’s destination – the Pro Tips page, where they offer insights on everything from golf tips to how to pack for a hike according to the current season
If you’re lucky enough to have a Dick’s in your town, be sure to take advantage of their curbside pick up. We’ve used it many times in the last year and it’s quick and easy, and is especially helpful when you’re ordering heavy items like weights!
