As promised, I am back today with my winter capsule wardrobe. For the next two months, and maybe beyond, I will only be wearing these items. I didn’t include undershirts because they are mostly unseen, save for the occasional turtleneck. And I didn’t include coats either because I like options when it comes to keeping warm and dry (and stylish!).
This is not a rigid scenario. If I decide I need to wear different shoes or swap out a pair of jeans, I am not going to stress it. I shared last month that I am currently in the middle of a muscle-building phase, this means my body (read: butt and thighs!) is changing. A lot of my jeans are tight, and I am embracing loose pants and leggings like never before. So if a pair of pants I am planning to wear from my capsule line up doesn’t feel good on me, I will not hesitate to grab something else that does.
You’ll notice that dresses and jumpsuits and overalls are absent from my capsule. I don’t usually wear many dresses in the winter so, in effort to keep my wardrobe simple, I left them out. This also frees me from that feeling of “I should try to wear X.” Some items just aren’t practical right now and that’s okay. I also omitted jumpsuits and overalls, which can be hard to wear in the winter because I don’t love how they layer. But that will make it all the merrier when they return in the spring!
The Items:
Knitwear is a major cold weather category for me, I wear sweaters almost exclusively this time of year. I knew I’d have a lot of them in my capsule, so I made sure to choose a variety of styles.
Cropped Chunky Convertible Sweater, c/o | V-neck sweater, c/o | Half Zip Sweater, c/o | Cropped Black Turtleneck, c/o | Tunic Sweater | Ruffle Shoulder Sweater (I sized down) | Sweater Vest, c/o | Rust Cardigan (this color no longer avail.) | Cashmere Crew, c/o (I sized down) | Oversized Crew, c/o | Oversized Turtleneck | Oversized Cardigan (I sized down)
For sweatshirts, I had to have my trusty Anine Bing, this thing is so soft! Plus two other ones I like to wear.
Los Angeles Sweatshirt | 100% Human, c/o (men’s size L) | Cropped Sweatshirt (this color’s out of stock)
I love jackets for an alternative to sweaters, they are great for layering and wearing as a third piece. But it’s always smart to be sure you have a coat or two that fits over them!
Long Wool Shirt Jacket (I sized down) | Green Shirt Jacket* | Denim Overshirt | Wool Shirt Jacket (I sized down) | Glen Plaid Blazer c/o

I got smart this time around and included very few tops in my capsule. During the winter months it’s too cold for a single top, so I included a few that would work well layered under a vest/sweater/jacket or layered over a turtleneck.
Fancy Blouse* | Ruched Sleeve Tee, c/o | Cardigan Top, c/o the Lobby | Oversized Button Up | Ruffle Collar Blouse, c/o

Jeans are my ride-or-die, as evidenced by the large selection here and the amount of time I spend wearing them. I know these all look alike, but I promise they’re not!
90s Jeans | 90s Pinch Waist | 90s Distressed | 90s Pinch Waist Distressed | Original Cheeky, c/o | Way High Rigid, c/o | Wide Leg*

Pants are the best category for making your wardrobe feels like it has variety. You can wear a colorful or patterned pair of pants and it makes the whole outfit!
Cowboy Pants | Loose Trousers* | Wide Leg Cords, c/o | Barrel Leg Cords (older) | Leggings | Black Jeans, c/o | Barrel Leg Jeans, c/o (use code SS-FRIENDS-15 to save)

I am a bonafide shoe lover… but my options are pretty limited in a rainy PNW winter. These are the shoes I’ve been wearing the most so I decided to make a capsule out of them.
Brown Boots | Black Chunky Boots | White Sneakers | Loafers (I like these too) | Run Star Hike Converse | Lace Up Boots (use 15ANDREA to save) | Platform Converse
As I’ve gone through this process of creating a capsule again, I’ve looked back through some old posts from the years I capsuled and I have some interesting observations. The outfits I wore back then were a very true representation of my personal style, and it really hasn’t changed a ton. I still like and would wear many of them today. In more recent years as a blogger and content creator I’ve had access to way more clothes, and I feel like that has clouded my view of my own style. It’s a reminder to me that having fewer items definitely helps connect you to your personal style.
Your Turn. Have you ever created a capsule wardrobe? I’ll admit, I was a bit daunted by the thought of putting one together again. But it wasn’t so bad. I started in the ‘notes’ app of my phone and slowly wrote down the items I thought I’d want to wear. I mulled it over for a few weeks and then got my closet in order. If you’re feeling: overwhelmed by your closet, bored by your closet or confused about your style I highly recommend experimenting with a capsule wardrobe. If you’re interested in future blog posts pertaining to the ‘how to’ or anything else around capsule wardrobes, let me know in the comments!

What a great post! I love the pieces you picked and I am always excited to see your outfits!
Thanks Michelle!! I always look forward to your outfits.
I like all the orangey browns. This is about the size of my winter wardrobe. I get into uniform mode when it’s cold. The thing that has really helped me keep things minimal is having a color scheme. I try to make sure anything I add to my wardrobe will go with most other things.
Thanks Leah, I really like those colors too. That’s so true about a color scheme. I find I like my individual outfits better when they follow an overall color scheme too. Good luck staying warm!
Hi Andrea, I am interested in following this and how you feel about it. Embarrassingly, my closet has grown a lot during covid (attempted coping mechanism, definitely). A recent IG post by thrifty tomboy talked about having a lot of beautiful pieces sitting in your closet like a museum, and that really hit home. I am looking to take a step back and simplify, and look forward to following your next few months.
Hi Lindsey! You know, I think I had an element of covid coping behind my shopping too. It’s like I was trying to buy hope. Ugh, and here we are again. At least I am less tempted to shop these days. That sounds like a spot-on analysis, I’ll have to go look for that post. I’ve been dressing out of my capsule all week and it has been SO MUCH EASIER to pull together an outfit that I like or love. I’m glad you’re here Lindsey!
I’m on a forced capsule wardrobe of sorts in my pregnancy wardrobe, and I love the inspiration for mixing and matching. And I’m able to wear some of my regular clothes to give variety. I’m running on 3-4 pairs of pants (including overalls), and most of the sweaters in wardrobe work fine, but I’m mostly stoked for the cropped sweater I bought for boxing day this year by 7115 by Szeki. I’m happy to show off my baby bump as long as I can haha. Good luck with your wardrobe!
That sweater sounds so lovely! I have stalked sweaters from 7115 by Szeki, but have yet to buy one, what a cute way to show off a baby bump! Good luck with your capsule, I hope you can wear your pants as long as possible. ;)
Your capsule looks great! I’m excited to follow along
I’ve read your blog for many years, but when I had my baby 2 years ago I randomly read it from the beginning to end (while I was waiting for my labor to start) so your early years are fresh in my memory now
That is wild Val! And super cool. I haven’t even done that. Hopefully it wasn’t too repetitive. And thank you! I hope it’s helpful to see my outfits.
I love posts like these! I am very confused about my style and seeing posts like yours help me plan my wardrobe. Keep ‘em coming!
