Everlane 2020 Denim Review (Includes the new Way-High Jean!)

When Everlane released their first styles of jeans in 2017, I was lucky enough to visit their headquarters, meet the team and preview the collection. I reviewed them for you, and then, in 2018, I did an update. Fast forward to 2020, and we have seen many new styles come out, well beyond Everlane’s original skinny jeans. There are 90’s jeans, bootcut, flares, and even, finally, a wide leg jean! I figured it was high time I give you guys an update on my favorite Everlane jeans.

In today’s post I am highlighting the styles I wear the most along with a brand new release coming out one week from today, the ‘Way-High Jean‘.

A few notes about my jeans preferences: I like little-to-no stretch, a high waist, and comfort is king.

MODERN FLARE

FACT SHEET:
SIZE: 28 Regular
RISE: 11″
INSEAM: 31″
LEG OPENING: 21″
COLORS: Dark Blue Wash

The Modern Flares are some of my favorite jeans from Everlane. I like to call these yoga pants masquerading as jeans. They are soft and easy to wear. The true blue is a color that pairs well with nearly everything in my closet.

FABRIC: Mid-to lightweight soft, stretchy denim, 87% Cotton, 12% Elasterell-p, 1% Elastane. (These are some of the stretchiest jeans I own.)
FIT: Runs true to size. I am currently a size 27, and I am considering buying a new pair in my true size for a more sleek fit through the hips.
PERFORMANCE: Really comfortable and easy to wear. No restriction on movement, easy to sit for long periods of time.
STYLING: These are really fun to create outfits with! They are a nice departure from cropped jeans, and have some leg-lengthening magic. I love wearing mine with clogs, boots, sneakers, basically anything. You can see how I styled them several ways in this post.

’90s CHEEKY STRAIGHT

FACT SHEET:
SIZE: 27 Regular
RISE: 11″
INSEAM: 28.5″ (ankle length: 26.5″)
LEG OPENING: 14″
COLORS: Bone, Medium Blue, Dark Wash, Vintage Sunbleached Blue, Washed Black, Destructed

These jeans have been an Everlane staple for me ever since they first came out almost two years ago. I like them because they are made from 100% cotton (which takes some breaking in!) and have a button fly. They remind me of vintage jeans, but with a high waist.

FABRIC: 100% Cotton
FIT: Runs true to size. Will be snug at first. These jeans are great for curvy bodies because they have roomy hips and nip in at the waist. Getting the fit right for straight body types (mine) can be a little bit more tricky.
PERFORMANCE: As I mentioned these take some breaking in. Over time, 100% cotton loosens a bit and shapes to your body. Worth the effort in my opinion!
STYLING: These are a perfect jean if you’re looking for something looser than skinnies, but still a minimal volume pant. The are called a straight jean, but to me look slightly tapered. They are a great shape to pair with big tops and oversized sweaters. The crop is perfect on a tall(ish) person like me (I’m 5’7), and they come in ankle length too!

AUTHENTIC STRETCH

This style of jeans is no longer available, but I wanted to speak to the fit and feel of this fabric, which is used in Everlane’s popular Authentic Stretch High-Rise Skinny. This is an extremely wearable fabric. Very similar to the Modern Flare.

FABRIC: 77% cotton, 17% modal, 2% elastane, 4% polyester
FIT: Runs true to size. Very stretchy, can easily accommodate weight fluctuations. Also available in curvy.
PERFORMANCE: These are like the leggings of jeans in my opinion. No fuss, all comfort. The fabric is form-fitting without compromising real denim details like pockets or leather patches on the back.

NEW: WAY-HIGH JEAN

FACT SHEET:
SIZE: 27 Regular
RISE: 12″
INSEAM: 27″
LEG OPENING: 16.5″
COLORS: Vintage Indigo, Distressed, Coal, Flax

And new in at Everlane, the Way-High Jean! These are the first loose-fit pair of jeans I have seen from them. True to their name, they have a sky-high rise, followed with a loose, relaxed, generous leg.

FABRIC: thick, medium stretch
FIT: Runs true to size, or maybe even a tad big. These were loose for me at the onset, which makes me think they are intended to fit that way. If you’re in between sizes, I would consider sizing down.
PERFORMANCE: These are very comfortable, which I think is due to the loose fit and stretchy denim. They are great pants to wear after a leg day workout when you just want your legs to feel relaxed and not constricted!
STYLING: Because these jeans are decidedly looser and baggy, styling must be much more considered. The first time I wore them I had a baggy sweater and a beanie on, and the look felt a bit sloppy. The second time I added my favorite spicy boots and a slim fit turtleneck, and felt very chic and modern. I also felt relaxed, something about relaxed-fit pants makes me feel relaxed

Other items featured in this blog post: Alpaca Oversized Sweater, Striped Turtleneck, Italian Merino Turtleneck and Western Boot (<–currently on sale!)

I hope this review is helpful for you! Feel free to let me know if you have questions about any of these styles.

  1. Thanks for the comprehensive review, Andrea. I admit I’m not a fan of the 90s look, but am I the only person who finds Everlane consistently misses the mark with their jeans? They always seem to get something wrong with each design and lean a bit too frump for my liking. As for the new Way High, petite short-waisted women like me will be biding our time until jeans no longer rub our ribs or brush our bra hooks. Give me a good ol’ mid-rise any day.

    1. I used to feel this way too, and coming from a curvy gal wasn’t a fan. I then tried the cheeky/ curvy pair and they are amazing.

    2. I think their denim style is very deliberate, almost like a ‘norm core’ and intentionally plain, and I could see how that is not for everyone. And yes, I could see why a high rise might drive you bonkers!!

    3. I love Everlane in general but I HATE their jeans, for all of the reasons you mentioned. I’m 5’3”,
curvy on the bottom, and I haven’t found one pair that works for me (and I’ve tried several styles).

  2. I’ve been looking at more flared jeans so it’s nice to see those styled.
Ooooh I’m pretty excited about this new denim. I hope I can snag a pair!

    1. Flare jeans are so fun to wear!! I feel like they make so many of my sweaters/blouses have a whole new look!

    1. Thanks friend! I’m so tickled you stopped by my blog. Agreed on the cheekys, they are a fav of mine! And I really like what they do for my backside 😆

  3. Merry Christmas to you and your fam!
Hmm, these look really cool! I am still needing to break in and wear a pair of kickcrops I ordered a while ago.

These all look really fun and the 90’s cheeky straight and the way high are probably my favorites.

    1. Hi Shon!! Thank you! Merry Christmas to you guys too! It takes a lot more dedication to break in jeans these days doesn’t it?

  4. ooooo those way high jeans are calling my name! I’ve had SUPER luck with everlane’s jeans (i’m also a size 27 and more of a straight figure). I’m OBSESSED with their newish Arc jeans – so sculptural/polished and comfortable! Also a big fan of the super soft jeans, the cheeky straight and the 90’s cheeky. My daughter has also had luck with their pants and she has a very tiny waist and wider hips and thighs and “waist gap” on jeans is very common for her but she has had luck with the arc and the cheeky straight.

  5. Hi Andrea, I just posted on your ‘gram but figured I’d ask here. Love your Everlane denim reviews. I bought and returned both cheeky and 90s cheeky, but I just ordered again as I feel maybe sizing up will give me the look I want. Re: the way high jeans, I love them, but did you review the size chart? It seems to vary from the proportions of their other jeans in that the waist is looser and the hips are smaller. I wear 24 in authentic stretch skinny. 24/25 in the 90s cheeky (though weight training has increased my butt so I just ordered them looser). Not sure how these will work on me, but they look great!
