My Wardrobe Goals and Intentions for 2021

Do you have any wardrobe goals or intentions for the new year? Mine are starting to shape up. But they probably aren’t what you think:

1 >> I want to be more adventurous as I style, have more fun and create more unexpected outfits. AKA, I want to be more beholden to what I love, and less to what other people think.

2 >> I want to thrift more. Yes to thrifting. I am not talking sourcing like-new stuff secondhand, but the kind of thrifting you can only do in-person, scouring for items of a different era. I am endlessly inspired by other decades of clothing. And most of the time the older stuff was made better too.

3 >> I want to better sift purchases and additions through a multi-year perspective. It’s so easy to get excited about the now and forget to think long-term. I want to strike a balance of listening to my inner style voice and weigh it against trends.

4 >> I want to do more with what I have, maybe with the help of a wardrobe tracker, (by hand this time). I tried this a few years ago, via spreadsheet, and failed miserably! I think I made it too complicated. I might try doing it by hand this year, adding items as I wear them. It could be a telling experiment on which items in my closet are serving me the best.

How 2020 changed my relationship with my clothes:

This year I’ve sought out comfort through clothing more than I ever expected. Both physical comfort and, even more, psychological comfort. The act of getting dressed each day has never been more important in my life. Through all the turmoil this year has thrown at us, being able to pull on an outfit that I love has truly made me feel good. I am not suggesting we find our comfort or seek our peace in physical items alone, but it is certainly a part of the equation.

And of course, this has been the year of the matching leisurewear sets. Though I’ve embraced it in limited form, it’s something wonderful to come out of this year. Clothes that feel like pajamas, but look coordinated and cute have been a lifeline for many of us.

In conclusion:

I’ve been inspired by so many people who are taking a magnifying glass to their style and their purchases. I’ve always believed in restraint and that fewer options lead to more creativity. I loved reading on Instagram about the folks who are setting limits on how much they purchase in the new year.

As always, my favorite thing is to share outfits. I’ll continue to do so here and on the gram.

  1. I agree with you wholeheartedly and wardrobe goal #1 is something I aspire to a well. It’s not always easy but it becomes easier with consistency and practice. It’s difficult to ignore critics (whether that person is yourself or others) but remaining true to oneself is so important. I look forward to seeing your more adventurous side and thrifted outfits next year! Have a lovely Christmas and new year!

    1. Thank you so much! I hope to come back to this list to re-invigorate myself. Merry Christmas + Happy New Year to you as well! xx
