Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: A Few Things on My List

Almost everything about this year has been weird, driving us out of our routines and comfort zones. But one major shopping event is back on track: the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It was postponed by a month, but it’s slated to open this week (or it’s already open if you have early access) and you can preview everything that will go on sale on Nordstrom’s site.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is a little different from typical retail sales in that it’s a forward-looking sale. In other words, the items on discount are for the seasons ahead, fall and winter, instead of end-of-season closeouts. The prices drop for a few weeks, and then go back up after the sale closes.

Some folks shun the Nordstrom sale because, in years past, influencers have gone a little bit overboard at promoting it, and have engaged in very consumer-glorifying tactics, ie. buying tons and tons, or even buying and returning stuff just for the sale. I found myself turned off from that in years past and took a break from shopping the sale. Now, I’ve found a happy place of using the sale to pick up some items off a very short list, usually things like coats and shoes for my family, for the upcoming wet weather season. Last year I snagged Patagonia rain shells for all three of my kiddos, and they wore them for much of the year. Everytime they got a compliment on their nice jacket I would smile to myself knowing I had saved a pretty penny when I bought them. Unfortunately Nordstrom doesn’t have those exact jackets this year, but they have quite a few other great items (including jackets) as part of their sale, I’ll share some of my favorites below!

But first a few key dates:

Nordstrom shoppers who have a debit or credit card with the brand will fall somewhere between the dates of Aug 13-18, and the sale is open to everyone starting August 19th. Prices will go back up August 31st.

My Nordstrom Sale Picks

1: Zella Longline Sports Bra – If you follow me on Instagram, it’s no secret that workouts are my quarantine hobby. I’ve been rocking the same collection of workout clothes for the past several years, and I’d like to add another set. I love the print on this and the corresponding bottoms.

2: Air Max Running Shoe – I’ve had the same pair of workout sneakers for 7 years and I would like to upgrade soon. I like how much support this pair has.

3: High Waist Print Leggings – I’ve included two Zella items because I have two pairs of leggings I bought from Nordstrom almost a decade ago and they still look like they’re in great shape. These are definitely not a need, but they sure are pretty!

4: Lug Leather Bootie – I expect to be wearing lots of pull on shoes this winter, because I won’t be wearing shoes for long periods of time (quarantine problems!). I love the lug style Dr. Marten’s I got in the winter and would love a version in a lighter color like this. I also like these because they are the budget version of these ones I’ve been swooning over.

5: Hooded Windproof + Water Resistant Insulated Raincoat – This one had me at the title. In Oregon I live in a raincoat for most of the year, and the challenge is finding one that is warm (but not too warm) and still rain blocking. I am thinking of trying this one in a size up and replacing my Stutterheim (which looks great, but isn’t super practical for constant wear).

6: Fleece Robe – Top of my 2020 needs: fleece hugs. (Plus my big, plush robe could stand to be upgraded.)

7: Kinetic High Top Sneaker – This is my wildcard item. It’s unlike anything I usually wear, but I am unusually drawn to them. Practical and easy, and unexpected.

8: Hooded Wool Blend Duffle Coat – I love this coat for the the shape, the color and the hood. It has an impressive amount of wool in the fabric too.

Sale Picks for My Kids

I’m not really shopping the sale for my kids this year. Because we are doing online schooling through the fall, they just don’t need a lot. BUT, if my girls needed winter coats, these are what I would buy. My kids tend to prefer midweight coats over thick or bulky ones. I like how this one looks like it could layer over most things! My son’s winter jacket doesn’t have a hood, so I might get this one for him. For my girls (if they wore the colors I liked) I’d pick this sweater and these jeans!

If you’re shopping the Nordstrom Sale this year, happy hunting to you! Please note this blog post contains affiliate links – this means if you see something you like and make a purchase, Seasons + Salt may make a commission. Thank you so much for your support!

  1. I love those freda salvador boots too! i wonder if the lucky brand boots come even close to those…. or if they’re worth the splurge. I too want quick on and off shoes this year. Do you have freda salvador boots? are they worth the high price tag?

    1. Hi Eliza! I have 2 other pairs of Freida Boots (lace up) and they are fantastic. Gorgeous and well made unlike anything else! It might be with the splurge for the FS boots if you can swing it. They usually have a friends and family sale sometime in the fall too.

  2. I bought the lucky brand boots in beige and would sooooo appreciate styling tips if you get them too!! Do you have blundstone boots and any ideas for styling those as they are similar.
