It is my great pleasure to bring you something totally new and fun today: 5 Ways to Style a Pinafore!! I’ve been having way too much fun wearing this pinafore over the last few weeks. There is something so lovely about wearing a dress while being at home 24/7. It is a major shift from sweats or jeans, but without sacrificing any of the comfort (hello, loose dress). Bam! We have a winner on our hands.
But first, what the heck is a pinafore?
My limited research indicates that a pinafore is a garment that can serve as a functional day apron, to keep clothing clean, or as a fashion garment. The latter is what we might call a jumper in the U.S. This beautiful piece of clothing can do either job. I’ve seen Pyne & Smith founder Joanna styling her pinafores beautifully over dresses, in apron-fashion (though part of me would die inside if someone wiped their dirty hands on one!). For me, the pinafore is decidedly a fashion garment, and I think it looks so, so good over many of my tops, and even sweaters!

I am so excited to share these outfits with you. Honestly, I feel like I’m barely scratching the surface of how one could wear a pinafore. In colder seasons I think it would look great with tights and a turtleneck, or even a chunky sweater.
For this post, everything I styled is spring and summer friendly. All of these outfits I wore in real life, and I loved them. I have donned this dress at least seven times already in the short amount of time I’ve owned it. The fact that it’s a pinafore means I can literally wear it over and over before laundering, a total bonus if you’re into outfit repeating.
OUTFIT #1 – With a Tank Top
This is the Model No.32 Pinafore in black linen (is there a better fabric to wear?). Linen is one of my favorite textiles because it is soft, smooth, and has beautiful body and drape. And, of course, it’s wonderfully breathable. I like wearing this dress with a tank top because it turns it into a lovely sleeveless dress, great for warm and hot days. I think, if you had a super cute bralette, you could get away with wearing just that underneath the pinafore too! Or maybe even a bandeau type bra, bonus if it’s a fun color!

OUTFIT #2 – With a Tee
I wanted to test out a pairing that added some color to the pinafore and this tawny, brown tee did the trick. The cap sleeves are decidedly feminine, which makes for a bit of a girly outfit. I’m not opposed to that, but I think a loose t-shirt would be really cute too. The beauty of the pinafore is that it has low-cut arms, you could truly wear a top of any size with it.

OUTFIT #3 – Dress It Up With a Ballet Style Top + Heeled Clogs
I received lots of ‘you look nice’ comments from my household when I wore this one! This look is classy and feminine, and even though casual is usually my jam, I quite enjoyed it. It makes me think of how I might dress up the pinafore with boots in the wintertime.

OUTFIT #4 – Go Dramatic With a Volume Blouse and Big Sleeves
This is one of the first ways I knew I wanted to style this dress – with a big, blousey top underneath. I love the drama of the voluminous sleeves contrasted with the simple, black pinafore. I will definitely repeat this in the winter with a big, thick sweater.

OUTFIT #5 – Cozy Up With Your Favorite Sweater
I’m not sure you could assemble a better, stay-at-home outfit. There is major comfort-factor because of the sweater, essential comfort because of the dress and just enough style to make me feel like I’m one step ahead (or many!) of my sweats. The outfit is so cute you almost didn’t notice my dirty hair. (I find it’s usually much more efficient to put on a cute outfit than spend 30+ minutes washing and styling my hair.)

FURTHER PINAFORE DETAILS:
Unlike its namesake, this pinafore has a full-coverage back. There is also a little tie so you can adjust the waist to cinch it to your preference. The top seams each feature two, large, functional brown buttons. The linen is midweight, 100% flax and the dress is designed and made in California. The pinafore also comes in guernsey check linen. If black linen is your jam Pyne & Smith also has the Model No.17 in black linen. I am also a big fan of the Cosette Stripe in the V-neck button up style.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this real-life pinafore style session! If you have any questions about the dress or Pyne & Smith, let me know! I bought my first dress from them in 2017 and have been a fan ever since!
