WFH Style: T-Shirt + Trouser Formula

This week many people across the globe are settling into a 4th week of working from home. I’m still astonished at what’s happening, and simultaneously fascinated that nearly the entire globe is experiencing the effects of the same, one thing.

Today, I want to talk about a new work from home (WFH) style formula that I’ve been embracing. It’s given me a way to build easy, comfortable, semi-polished outfits.

But first, I am compelled to acknowledge the privilege I have to work from home. My heart aches for all the people in the service industry, retail employees, and every other person who has lost a job with this near-overnight global shut down. I hope beyond hope that it all passes swiftly and our collective economies can spring back to life. For now I will continue to use my platform to elevate small makers who are also feeling the economic crisis.

WFH Style, but make it fun.

There’s a trouser trend sweeping the spring fashion scene and I am in love with it. As a child of the 90’s, I never thought I’d be so fond of pleated pants. Yet here I am, wearing them, styling them, and loving them on my mom-bod. In some ways, it feels counterintuitive to add fabric and pleats and overall volume to what I’d consider to be my least-confident body area, but damn, it also feels kind of freeing. And I think it looks super cool. (See my trouser pinterest board here.)

In today’s post I am sharing three versions of my aforementioned newfound outfit formula: T-shirts and trousers. The t-shirts say: I’m casual and comfortable, I even like to have fun. The trousers say: I’m stylish and not afraid to show it.

Note: to get the most out of a t-shirt and trouser outfit while WFH be sure to find a way to stand up during your Zoom calls to show off the pants. Perhaps you could, grab a glass of water, pop up to get a pen, close the curtains behind you, etc. Or, add a red lip and gold hoops, that will make your t-shirt look good too.

1. Oversized Tee + Trousers + Casual Sandals

I love the oversized tee with the trousers because it echoes the ‘flowy-factor’ of the pants. The tee is tucked in and draped, creating an interesting volume-on-volume look.

These pants are c/o REIFhaus and they are the full-length sister to the Sylvie Trouser shorts (see them styled here and here). They are made with the most amazing organic cotton dobby fabric from Japan. They are lightweight and breezy, with smart pleats in the front and a wide elastic waistband in the back, which makes them feel like pajama pants.

2. Graphic Tee + Trousers + High Top Sneakers

Awhile back I saw some excellent styling of mixed patterns AND browns and blacks, and I’ve been trying to recreate it ever since. (You can see my last attempt here.) It feels fresh and unexpected and combines all the colors I like to wear. These pants may have dots on them, but I’m pretty sure they act like a neutral when you want them to.

I opted for sneakers with this look to double-down on the casual side of trousers, and I LOVE it! I am currently crushing on this pair of sneaks too.

3. Mock Neck Tee + Trousers + Leather Slides

This is decidedly the most polished of the three takes on the ‘t-shirt x trousers’ formula, and I still love it. Trousers look really smart with a sleek shoe, and a mock neck tee adds a nice 90’s element.

Small Business Spotlight: REIFhaus

WHO: Lindsey Reif is the talent behind the label and she does the designing, pattern drafting, sizing and sewing herself. In her own words, “I love to problem solve, and designing clothes scratches that itch for me. For me, it’s one part aesthetic and one part engineering, striving to get the perfect fit, to problem solve how to piece a garment together in an efficient manner for production.”
WHAT: “I love clothing that enhances but not overshadows the wearer, that makes a bold, yet quiet statement.”
WHERE: Portland, Oregon
WHY: “Being grounded in that process really allows me to focus on designing a collection that will fold seamlessly into an existing wardrobe, is long lasting, and will remain timeless and hopefully be worn and loved for years to come.”

I’ve been wearing my favorite pieces from REIFhaus since 2016 and can personally attest to the staying power they have in my wardrobe. They are both modern and timeless, statement-making and long-wearing.

You can use the discount code APRILSHOWERS15 to save 15% on any order from REIFhaus through April 17th. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Oregon Food Bank. My favorites from the spring summer collection are the Sylvie Trouser in Polka Dot Dobby, the Selene Dress in Eucalyptus and the Evan Dress in Gingham.

    1. Thank you Lynn! I am so lucky to have the opportunities to experiment with cool clothing. I feel like a t-shirt is so unexpected, and I just love it with these pants!

  1. I’m an avid reader of your blog but first-time poster! I just got my first pair of Nisolo shoes (the Lima slides) and I love them – and the company’s mission. I’ve been eyeing the huraches for summer – do you wear them a lot and are they comfortable?

    1. Yes and yes!! I had to break the in a little bit, but I love them!! I’ve actually been wearing them for almost 5 years! My first pair ended up being too big so I have these now, but I love them so much. And yes, they are an amazing company!
