The Cloud Cardigan: Coat-Friendly

Last week, when I shot these photos, Portland was experiencing the coldest week of the season. It was the first time snow was truly in the forecast, and it was freezing outside. Needless to say, as soon as we were finished each photo shoot I put a coat on top of what I was wearing.

Rewind to the fall, when I came across an amazing, cropped, balloon-sleeve sweater at one of my favorite local haunts. I almost bought it on the spot, but decided I wanted to come back and see if it would fit under a coat. Sadly, the answer was no. The sleeves were too big and thick to fit under my jackets, making it a deal-breaker for me. I was so bummed, but knew if I couldn’t wear a coat on top, it would never be a practical player in my closet.

Fast-forward back to now, and this fluffy, cozy cardigan I’ve been raving about. Despite its generous-sized sleeves, the magical properties of this sweater make it easy to fit under a coat. If you’re familiar with alpaca, you know that it’s both warm and lightweight. This sweater is no exception. The soft, drapey sleeves easily slip into my favorite coats. I’ve worn it with my Puffy Puff, which is slightly oversized (even though I have it in my true size) and my Cocoon Coat, which has relaxed sleeves, even in a size down. It also fits under my Stutterheim rain jacket, though a bit more snuggly through the arms.

I can’t wait until the weather warms up a bit and I can wear it without a jacket too.

Styling Notes.

Today’s look was a happy accident. I was putting this outfit together just to wear, but loved it so much I decided to photograph it, and include it in this week’s styling series. The details make it all come together – the turtleneck, big hoops and retro sneakers. I love how the sassiness of this look contrasts with the delicate, ethereal feel of the sweater.

  1. Hi Andrea, the cardigan looks great on you and love that it has a jacket-ish shape on its own. I would love to see in the post how it looks with the coat as well as without. Winter outfit “deconstruction” is one my fave kind of posts. I always feel a little awkward reading outfit posts (particularly winter ones) where you know the person wearing it is freezing or uncomfortable.

    1. That’s a great idea! It’s been awhile since I’ve done a post like that, but I will definitely keep it in mind. For now, here is a post I did in 2018 about coats, and another in 2017.
