This blog post is not sponsored, but I did receive the Dennis Jacket as a gift from Pamut Apparel.
I recently got a beautiful, cropped linen jacket in the mail. It’s a thoughtful take on a chore jacket by Pamut Apparel. Despite all my confidence in picking it out and integrating it into my wardrobe, I felt a little stumped on how to style it when it actually arrived. You can see my first attempt here, which I don’t think went particularly well.
Lucky for me, a few weeks later my clever styling friend Brianna got the same jacket from Pamut and shared some styling details on her Instagram feed (you can find the videos in her highlights). While listening to her advice I picked up a major tip that suddenly made everything click into place!
When styling a short, boxy jacket, pair it with interesting pants or skirts.
This works so well because that carefully-selected bottom piece adds shape back to the outfit. I had been trying to wear the jacket with straight cut jeans which didn’t do a very good job of balancing out the shape of the jacket. To put this idea to the test I styled the jacket into three outfits.

I paired the Dennis Jacket with my Clyde Work pants because they are some of the most interesting-shaped pants I own. They are wider through the thigh and narrow at the bottom. They feature big, deep pockets, and a high, fitted waist. Because I felt like there was already a lot going on with the clothing shapes, I kept the colors simple: olive and black. I think this pair is a match made in heaven! This would also look great with a black turtleneck.

Without a doubt I was inspired by Brianna on this one. The boxy jacket sits in lovely contrast to the full and feminine skirt. I don’t feel shapeless and the outfit silhouette is very interesting.

I think this one is my favorite! These pants are a bit of a ‘fit and flare’ shape, they go in at the knees and out at the bottom. They have sort of a 1970’s vibe, which is why I think I like them so much! Again, interesting-shaped pants + boxy jacket = simple and effective outfit formula.

I love it when I feel like I get a better understanding of why certain items work better together in my closet and others don’t. It helps take overall ‘outfit satisfaction’ up a notch!
Previously I had been feeling frustrated and a little unsure of how to wear the jacket, but now that I have spent some time getting to know the piece, I am viewing it with fresh eyes. This is an idea you could apply to almost anything in your closet. If you have an item you are stumped by, I encourage you to spend some time experimenting with styling it. Get to know it, understand what works with it (google tips for styling that particular item!) and then play around in your closet. You may be able to turn your frustration into satisfaction!
Loved this! Outerwear is what I find super tricky. I don’t think I’ve found a jacket or coat that I truly love yet. This jacket looks super cute, I actually like it on you even in the ‘4 Days Of Outfit’ post, it was my favorite look! :)
I actually really liked your first attempt. Tomboy cool with a pop of colour
I am.always drawn to this shape of jacket but because of my boxy wide shouldered torso, I worry about exaggerating it. Loved the idea with the interesting shape pants or skirts
I really love the skirt one! It feels really unique and cool and not “fancy”. I am forever trying to find non-fancy skirt outfits. It’s a fantastic jacket :)
