the Weekly Rundown: the Merits of a Landfill Visit + Keanu Reeves’s Date

The colors this fall in the PNW are undeniable!

Welcome to this edition of the Weekly Rundown. Here is a collection of things on the web that are giving me life this week, making me stop and think, or have me reaching for my wallet.

  1. Having recently done 12 days in Italy; Nice, Slovenia, and Prague in a carry on, including a black tie wedding I’m always shocked at how people seem to bring. I don’t coordinate my outfits quite as detailed as that, but I definitely bring clothes that can be worn in multiple outfits. It’s vacation it’s ok to wear the same shirt again.

    1. Yes, so true, outfit repeating on vacation is probably the best place to do it too, because you’re constantly in a new environment! Super impressive that you traveled to all those places in a carry on. I am always curious – what did you bring for footwear?

  2. My husband and I spent 17 days in Italy this spring, 7 cities, and he told me I could only bring a carry on 😭 I did it, and I did plan out everything first and tried them on too and it all worked out, but man was it stressful!!! (And I’d do it again :)

  3. I fully support Keanu Reeves’ girlfriend and love the message she’s spreading, but all the harsh comments about her online make me sad. I wish women embracing their gray wasn’t so taboo. I’ve spent the past year and a half growing out my hair dye-free. I’m 41, happily (mostly) gray and proud of it.

    1. I agree, why do we have these UNREALISTIC expectations about women not aging? I did not see the comments about her, but that makes me sad too.

      1. It was on Facebook. (I should know better than to read the comments!) A lot of people thought she looked old enough to be his mom or grandma. She’s 46 and I think she looks great, and I LOVE that she doesn’t look like everyone else. It was just kind of eye-opening to see how many people do NOT share that same view.

        1. That IS eye-opening. It’s interesting to observe what kind of thought patterns we’ve sort of been conditioned to fall in line with.

  4. Last fall my husband and I went to Italy for a month with our son who was 7 months at the the time and we did carry on only…..I read the article you linked to and couldn’t believe how much she packed;).

  5. I’d love to see a review of the Everlane teddy sweaters! I’m VERY sadly returning two Alpaca crews I was so excited to buy. :( I LOVE the shape of them but even sizing down they are way too long on me and I just feel swallowed up. I tried them on no less than 10 times hoping suddenly they would work on me, but I have to accept that they don’t. It’s just way too much volume for me to even do a graceful partial tuck.
Also the alpaca made me itch around the neck, which I hadn’t experienced before. Now I’m really needing to fill some holes in my sweater wardrobe.

    1. Hi Mallory! That’s interesting to hear that they are so big on you! I do love my alpaca crews. I did get a teddy, and it’s a bit shorter and tighter around the waist, which I like. But still very roomy through the sleeves and shoulders. I’ll try to share more on the blog soon!

  6. Oooh Andrea, such a good rundown!

When will we all look past gray hair to see the person instead? Let me know because my vanity won’t allow me to quit dying my hair every 6 weeks. 🤣

I really enjoyed the packing link! I was able to go 10 days in London and Spain this year with “just a carry-on” (but then shopped like a fiend and had to check my bag on the way home). 🤣

I packed a small crossbody purse inside a tote bag (for my “personal item”) so I could max out what the airline let me bring on but still have a purse small enough for exploring.

I dressed in light layers on the plane
ex: soft bra, tank, elastic waist joggers, linen cardigan, linen overcoat. I wore my bulkiest items then stashed them in the overhead bin or used them as a pillow as a way to “cheat”. It’s definitely easier to go carry-on only in the warmer months.

As with the linked article, I obsessively planned my outfits according to the weather forecast (cold and rainy in London, hot and dry in Spain made it difficult). I took photos of every outfit to remind me I had packed “enough”. I saved the photos to an album on my phone and surprised myself when I actually referenced them when getting dressed every day. So helpful!

I wore dresses over jeans in London where it was super cold, and then wore those items separately in Spain.

I packed a small bottle of detergent so I could wash my items out and rewear them. This was HUGE. Booking AirBnb’s with washers/drying racks was also helpful.

    Here’s what I packed:
    silver tennies*
    leather lace up brogues
    black Birks
    black straight leg jeans
    patterned joggers/pants
    linen wide leg pants
    short sleeve button down
    boxy linen knit cardigan
    2 x loose knit tanks*
    chunky linen sweater*
    loose linen dress
    linen duster*
    light trench coat (for rain)
    scarf*
2 pair earrings, one long necklace

    * designates worn on plane. Also I might have a linen problem – ha ha

I was glad a friend suggested compression socks for the plane, it made a huge difference!

When and where are you traveling?!? You’ll have the BEST outfits, I’m sure. Promise you’ll post about it here. xo

    1. Katie! What a fabulous, detailed list! I love it. I agree, trying everything on beforehand AND taking a photo is immensely helpful! Thank you for sharing your insights. No plans to travel right now (I wiiiiiisshhh!!!), but maybe someday!
