The other day when I got dressed, I put on this crewneck sweater, jeans and boots, but the outfit still didn’t feel finished. It felt too utilitarian and not visually interesting enough. Then I remembered the ‘third piece rule.’ It contends that adding a third piece to an outfit (a top layer, a scarf, a hat, etc.) often makes it feel finished. So I grabbed my plaid blazer and voila! a completed outfit. Bonus: the wool blazer kept me warmer indoors and out. When the temps dropped at night I topped the outfit with my cocoon coat which very easily fit over the blazer.

Yesterday, per my usual, I was stumped on what to wear. Then I remembered a look I’d seen on someone the night before that I particularly liked (featuring wide leg pants and clogs), so I did my best to recreate it.
I like having the option for pull-on wide leg pants verses a fitted, zippered pair. It makes them feel a little more casual and lounge-y. But they also look chic with heels too.

Editor’s Note:
I started out this month with the goal of posting my OOTD’s in real time, but the reality is that it’s not meshing well with my workflow. After today I will switch to a weekly outfit roundup format. I hope that’s okay with you!

I am ALL about the pull on pants. I love them, and your outfits with them look chic.
For some reason whenever *I* wear pants with an elastic waist, I worry that I look like I’ve stepped out in pajama pants. Do you ever feel that way? Perhaps in part it’s because I usually wear flats – I walk my kids to school (about a mile round trip), and then often continue on for another mile or two exercise walk. I’m also still getting used to a more laidback wardrobe now that I don’t go into an office, plus a slightly less svelte body after baby #2.
How do you combat that little worry about looking frumpy? (You totally don’t, but when I look in the mirror I honestly can’t tell if I’m looking casual chic or like I’ve given up, ha!)
Hi Mallory! Yes, I do feel that way sometimes, it can be so tricky! What type of flats do you like to wear with your elastic waist pants? I find a flat boot or a high top sneaker helps them feel a little more intentional, but still comfortable. Or, I’ll go for a more fitted sweater instead of oversized. And I always wear gold hoop earrings, that helps make me feel more pulled together, and makes the outfit seem more intentional. Then I mostly try to concern myself with how I feel when I look in the mirror. Do I like what I see? Even if it’s uber casual, but I still like it, I go for it. But if I look in the mirror and still feel frumpy, then I change something out till I feel better. You got this! It might take a little trial and error, but I’m confident you can make elastic pants work for you!
