At the risk of sounding repetitive, fall came fast to the PNW this year. It’s been raining almost non-stop this month (sad face) and I keep reaching for long sleeves and warm coats to stay cozy. Thankfully there are beautiful cold weather styles dropping like crazy.

Today I’m sharing my favorites from Only Child’s Fall/Winter collection:

– the Luzon Tie Top
– the Ryan Pant
– the Cardiff Trench (revamped in heavy wool!)

Read on to find out why I chose them, how I’m styling them, and how to claim your reader discount!

THE LUZON TIE TOP

A few years back I received the short-sleeved Luzon Tie Top from Only Child when I did a springtime partnership with them. Over the years, that became a celebrated and loved top in my closet (you’ve probably seen it many times on the blog). I’ve always liked wearing it because the knot detail takes it from a top to a styled top.

This year, Only Child revealed a new fabric choice for their long-sleeve Luzon Tie Top: a 70/30 cotton and silk blend. When I saw it in the gorgeous oatmeal color, I knew I wanted to try it. I am always a sucker for a top in this shade but add in the texture and soft drape and I’m sold.

FIT + SIZING: This top runs about two inches longer than the short sleeve version, and has a relaxed fit through the body. The sleeves are nice and long, which makes them easier to layer under cardigans or jackets. The Luzon Tie Top comes in XS-XXL and I am wearing my usual size Medium.

STYLING: The Luzon is a favorite of mine because I like how the tie detail adds visual interest to an outfit and defines the waist area. BUT… do you know what’s really fun about this top? You can actually style it 3 ways. First, the tied version above, second, a big traditional knot (like if you were putting a side knot in your tee, a la 1990) and you can tuck it in! See below.

GARMENT CARE: The Luzon Tie Top is easily cared for, you can machine wash in cold and line dry it. (I always use a drying rack.) Iron if needed.

FURTHER STYLING: The next time I wear this, I plan to try tucking it into high waisted jeans with a big, chunky cream cardigan! I also think it would be really cute tied with white, wide-leg jeans and suede ankle boots.

THE RYAN PANTS

I’ll admit, this style felt outside my comfort zone… at first. I chose the Ryan Pants because I always thought they looked cute, and I was looking for an update in the (lacking) black pants department of my closet. When I first tried them on, the volume freaked me out a little. But I texted my style gurus Jaana and Paige, and consulted my husband, and they all said they loved them. Does anyone else do that? Feel braver trying a new style with the backing of trusted friends or family?

FABRIC: The Ryan Pants come in four shades of cotton twill: black, eggshell, clay and olive. The fabric is soft yet substantial. It felt good right out of the box, and seems like it will get even better with wash and wear. If you have shedding pets, you may want to consider an alternative to the black, which seems to easily collect pet hair.

FIT + SIZING: These come in six sizes: XS-XXL, and I took my usual size medium, which fits generously and comfortably. They are loose through the hips and have a slightly tapered leg. The Ryan Pant has a two-inch waistband which fits comfortably and looks good too.

GARMENT CARE: These are easy wash and wear pants. Throw them in the wash on cold, line dry and iron if needed.

STYLING: Because they are loose through the seat and thigh, I think they look really good with tucked tops or fitted sweaters. But I am most excited to try tucking in my drapey, long-sleeved black button-up top for a faux-jumpsuit look! I love the idea of jumpsuits in the winter, but am not keen on the idea of getting totally undressed to go pee, so I think a faux jumpsuit (or even boiler suit style) would be awesome. You could also try styling the pants with a black Luzon Long Sleeve for a jumpsuit effect, tied or tucked!

THE CARDIFF TRENCH IN HEAVYWEIGHT WOOL

This fall a long, camel or cognac wool coat was on my shortlist. I looked high and low last year, but most styles felt too dressy and dramatic for my lifestyle. This beautiful, umber-toned jacket is the ultimate end to my search.

FABRIC: This year’s rendition of the wool Cardiff Trench comes in a new, extra soft, heavyweight wool. It’s pretty amazing and is now the thickest wool coat in my closet. The fabric is 70% wool and 30% nylon which means it has a lot of wool in it. The jacket is not lined, but the seams are nicely finished and the pockets have a silky lining.

FIT + SIZING: The Cardiff Trench comes in five sizes: XS/S-XL/XXL. I am typically a size medium in OC styles, and I sized down to a S/M in this coat after seeing Haley Tucker (owner and designer at Only Child) do an Instagram stories try on of the S/M. I prefer the traditional fit over the oversized fit. The coat is designed for layering, so even with sizing down, I can easily fit a sweater underneath.

However, the magical part about this coat is the hidden *magnetic* closure that keeps it together, making it so much warmer and functional! No more trying to hold it closed with a bag or belt!

GARMENT CARE: The Cardiff Trench is dry clean only.

STYLING: I am excited to wear this over just about everything I own this winter. Think: wide-leg jeans, slim black jeans, chinos, you name it!

  1. Love the pants and the trench!
They look great on you and how good that the trench closes with a magnetic closure so you can easily wear it outside.
About the Ryan pants: does the fabric resemble the cotton canvas of Elizabeth Suzann?
I think it looks like the Andy pants and eventhough I always think that I don’t like a tapered leg, when I see it on someone I always love it :-).
So maybe it will be a good addition to my closet.

    1. Hi Martine, the fabric is a little different than the cotton canvas. It’s a twill, so it’s a different weave that makes it a bit softer and less rigid. I know what you mean about tapered pants. I never think I want them, but they are good for cold weather because they pair nicely with chunky sweaters and big coats.

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words Shannon!! 😅 I’m probably going to wear the top tomorrow. If you are at pickup you can see it IRL!

  2. Oh man I’ve been crushing hard on that coat! I have the oatmeal wool Cardiff from last year and have worn the heck out of it, as a coat with warm layers and an inside long cardigan layer. This seems more like straight outerwear? But the magnetic closure sounds amazing! I love my OC pieces, which I found through your blog 💗

    1. Oh Kerstin, thanks for sharing that! I am thrilled to have connected you with OC!

I read your comment a few hours ago and have been mulling your question over. I think it feels more like outerwear because it’s substantial, and if you put anything in the pockets it has more weight to it, and I think I’ll probably use it as outerwear more than indoor. BUT, I think it’s definitely passable for indoor use, and it’s quite soft, so I fully intend to use it that way too!

  3. Ohhh, Andrea, these are so temptingly good!! 1) Is the oatmeal fabric see-through? How would you compare its weight to say, ES midweight Linen vs. J+J raw silk? 2) This coat vs. the Everlane cocoon coat – which more has your heart? Which is warmer? Thanks!

    1. Oh my word Lindsey, you ask the best questions!! The oatmeal fabric is not see-through at all. You would be hard-pressed to see a dark bra underneath. It’s a really lovely fabric! A little bit more elevated than raw silk, and more cold-weather friendly than linen because the drape makes it easy to layer over (verses linen which is more structured). I would say it’s weightier than raw silk, but similar weight to ES linen.

On the coat vs. the Everlane cocoon coat, gosh that’s a tough call. I would say they’re pretty close on warmth, but the OC one might have the edge because the wool content is slightly higher (I’m checking on the exact amount right now, the website lists 70%, but it might be more). I do love the collar on the Everlane jacket and the button, and the wool is a bit more rough, so it seems less ‘precious.’ I do feel like the OC one could also pass as a cool cardigan/indoor jacket, where the Everlane one not as much. The overall shape is a little different too. My Everlane jacket is more square in the fit, and the OC (because I sized down) is more long and straight. Let me know what else you think of! 😅

  4. Love this look! Can you share the details of the layered necklaces shown in the first few images. Thanks!

  5. Can’t imagine spending that amount on an unlined trench that isn’t even 100% wool. The curated coat is 100% cashmere/wool and cost 350.00…seems like a better investment.

    1. I think it all comes down to what you’re looking for. The Curated coat is quite a different style, I prefer the more casual look of the Cardiff Trench. The fabric is quite heavy and warm, and I don’t mind the 30% nylon because it helps with durability (and softness) of the fabric.
