What I Wore: Clogs with Socks + Lots of Brown

Sometimes I wonder if I’m going to look back on this era of my personal style with the same chagrin we look back at the ‘brown everything‘ phase of the 70’s. Or, perhaps I’ll remember it fondly.

I love experimenting with what I wear. It’s one of my favorite mediums for expressing myself in this stage of life. When I was in high school I was too timid to follow my inner style voice, instead preferring to fall in line with what others were wearing. Now, I’m old enough to know better than to care too much what other people think. I still feel a bit limited by it, but not nearly the same way as when I was a teen.

The last few weeks have been pretty fun and very brown. Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing…

The Coverall (M), c/o muumuu (on major sale right now!) | Alpaca Cardigan, from FW’16 (similar) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana

This is my cool-mom power suit. Though I hold that thought lightly. It’s as comfortable as yoga pants (maybe more because I don’t have to worry about VPL), a lot more unique, and less athleisure-leaning.

Cardigan (M/L) Cuyana | Striped Tee, thrifted Ralph Lauren (very similar) | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Sneakers (41), Veja | Backpack, old (similar)

Another casual-fun look. It’s so nice to have a pair of pants this color in my closet. I love the way this tan shade warms up all my white, blue and cream tops. Working on my exposed sock game, how’d I do?

Cocoon Coat (4), Everlane | Square Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | White Wide Leg Denim, c/o ABLE | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Necklace, gift from husband | Backpack, old (similar)

This outfit skews a little dressy for my everyday, but I was pretty eager to pair these boots and pants. In order to make it a tad more casual I used a backpack for a purse. The olive-peat-white-cream color palette makes me very happy.

Clyde Trench (XS), Elizabeth Suzann | Soft Cotton Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) + (super similar in a high rise) | Day Boot (10.5), c/o Everlane | Backpack, old (similar)

Testing out the new cotton sweaters from Everlane here. It’s a little hard to see, but it wears kind of like a thick knit shirt. It’s fitted and you can tuck it in. I love the extra layer of warmth it lends. This is the time of year where I’m pretty much addicted to wearing sweaters every day to stay warm.

Baronne Duster (M), Esby (sadly this is nearly sold out, but I’ve seen a few versions around including this one and similar versions from this shop) | V Neck Sweater (M), Everlane | Cheeky Jean in washed black (27R), Everlane | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Tortoise Hoops, c/o Baleen

Trying hard to style this duster again. I love it so much, in theory, but have yet to learn how to wear it well. I like the volume play here between this and the slim cut jeans. I recently tried it on with wide legs and loved it. Will have to try that out soon! Note how the dark earrings tied into the overall color palette.

Cashmere Rib Round Crew Sweater (M), Everlane | 90’s Cheeky Jean (27), c/o Everlane | Waterproof Bootie, Aquatalia (similar)

Living my best 90’s life in these jeans. I got soooo many questions about them when I shared on Instagram, and did my best to answer them in last week’s blog post. They are super cute jeans, and they feel more like skinnies on me than straight leg. I love, love the high waist, button fly and stone wash (do we still use that phrase?).

Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation | Rain Boots (9), Everlane

Mom on duty reporting back with more practical outfits: a chunky wool knit, crop flare jeans and rain boots.

Cashmere Rib Round Crew Sweater (M), Everlane | Kamm Pants (6) in Tobacco | Clogs, No.6 (similar) | Slice Hoops, c/o Baleen

When you match your house… It took me a lot of courage to wear this socks and clogs combination out of the house. I had to wrestle with that ‘what will other people think’ factor. At first I had on ankle boots, but what I really wanted to wear were clogs (for comfort, ease and casual factor), so I went for it. I did feel a little funny, but I also had a lot of satisfaction.

Leather Jacket (S), Reformation x Veda | Raglan Sweater, 5+ years old, (similar) | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter, FW’16 (love this option) | Made in USA Center Hi Top, PF Flyers (women’s 10) | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Scarf (pattern here) | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady | Verge Necklace, c/o Favor Jewelry

I wore this on Saturday, a day I often go for a super casual combo. On this day, I wanted to feel as comfy as I do in my go-to vintage jeans, but a bit more styled. Adding a leather jacket and stand-out pants took my sweater and sneaks to the next level.

Smiles all around! Thanks for reading through my round-up of looks!

  1. Lovely outfits as always, but I especially love the shot of you with your hair pulled back! Your face is beautiful!

  2. The polka dot sock and clog combo was my favorite visible sock of the week!
Love all these outfits on you.
Hope you’re having a good week.

    1. Thanks so much Jodie! I was really happy wearing that. A good indicator that I need to follow my instincts more! :) Thanks for stopping by.

  3. I also love the socks! Would you mind sharing the brand? Always on the hunt for socks that are neutral but playful. Thank you!

  4. I was just thinking that maybe, just maybe, this Friday I’d give the socks and clogs look a go. You nailed it! And I love your Saturday look…coolest mom around :)

  5. I also love your hair pulled back for a fun change! Lots of inspiration in this post – especially since these looks can be interpreted with a different color palate and similar items as well! Thanks!

    1. Thank you for the kind words Michelle. Feeling very excited to have inspired you. Have fun playing around with your closet!

  6. I am a big fan of exposed socks :) I’ve done socks with sneakers and cropped jeans, and even socks with my Birkenstocks! (I know, I know haha.) I think you pulled it off! Btw, any recommendations for where to find cute, fun socks that are ethically made? (I normally like the ones at Madewell, but I’m looking for an ethical/sustainable alternative.)

    1. Socks with Birks, love it!! I totally did that when I was teenager, maybe it’s time to revisit! How fun would that be?! Eco Warrior Princess has a good post on sock sources.

  7. Jumping in to say I also love the exposed socks here! Much like the rest of my wardrobe, all of my socks are solid colors (grey/black at that), but perhaps it’s time to give something more fun a go!

    1. Yay! I hope you find something fun to try out Krystal. Sometimes it’s those little details that really give a look personality, or contribute to greater outfit satisfaction overall.

  8. I love the combos that you made last week!
You inspire me to use some more color and to try to integrate some off white tops/bottoms in my closet :-)
I also agree on what has been said already in the comments: your hair pulled back looks wonderful!

  9. Ps: a tip I would like to share with you (and all your readers) because I see your wear Veja sneakers: JAK shoes (https://www.jakshoes.com/).
Wonderful sneakers, they are locally made in Portugal, great quality leather and a very sleek look.
I ordered my first pair (too big, I’n now waiting for the right size to arrive) and I’m sure I will order an other pair later on.

    1. Thank you for the nice comment Martine! My hair has gotten long, and I am feeling the ponytails a little more these days! Thanks for the hot tip on those shoes, they are ⚡️💥

  10. Hi Andrea,
Do you remember what the import tax and duty fee was when you ordered from L’Envers? This is on top of shipping cost, correct?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Lauren, it’s been a bit but I believe there were no extra import taxes/fees, just a flat €25 shipping and handling fee.
