Introducing: muumuu, the Small Batch Clothing Brand Closing the Gap Between Chicness and Function

If I had to sum up the brand muumuu in one sentence it would be this:

Perfect linen in beautiful shapes and colors designed to be worn everyday in many ways.

It’s the casual woman’s answer to clothing beyond our favorite pairing of ‘jeans and a t-shirt.’ It’s the next step in our wardrobes, one that is stylish and interesting without a hint of ‘this feels too formal for my lifestyle.’ Though it can dress up nicely if you’d like.

As a work at home mom, I love to change up my outfits, and push the boundaries on my wardrobe in a way that’s interesting and chic, without feeling like I should be heading to a board meeting.

That’s where the smart lineup from muumuu comes in.

It’s a small batch collection produced locally in California, with 100% pure linen, ethically sourced from Japan. Their current line up includes FOUR simple garments: the Peasant Top (shown in above photos), the Everyday Pants (shown in above photos), the Coverall, and the Apron Jumper.

I bought the Peasant top at the end of the summer, and it’s been a well-loved addition to my wardrobe. (See it here and here.)

Most recently, I have been wearing the Apron Jumper and the Coverall, and am falling head over heels for both. The latter totally surprised me. But more on that coming soon. In Thursday’s blog post I’ll share all the details, including how I styled them for two weeks, including casual, dressy and keeping warm.

The Coverall by muumuu

First, I want to tell you a little bit more about muumuu, which, by industry standards, is a BRAND NEW clothing line (they launched in summer 2018). Founder Jess Mahaney says her desire for function and natural fibers was the impetus for creating the line.

I was inspired to create a clothing line long ago when it wasn’t as easy to find stylish clothes in 100% natural fibers. Then, after becoming a mother, I wanted to find simple, comfortable clothes that were easy to wash and wear and live in, that didn’t need a lot of thought in order to be chic but could stand up to sand boxes and sticky fingers and dinners out with my husband. Thus, muumuu was born.

Ethics are a top priority for Jess when it comes to creating her clothing. Her items are made in San Francisco, near where she lives, and she works with a local pattern maker to bring her designs to life. After production, all the items are garment dyed (to get those amazing colors!) at a family-owned shop in nearby Novato, CA

But her vision for using her business as a conduit for ethics goes even further.

My real dream would be to build out a creative workspace, a workshop of sewers and pattern makers and all the other hands and hearts that it takes to keep a small business bustling, and to be our own little factory of elves making things well for others to enjoy. Creating an environment where people are treated with a great deal of respect and care, are compensated well, and can find joy in their work really excites me.

Jess’s vision for the future of muumuu also includes expanded size offerings. She’s hoping to bring on XL sizes as early as this spring, and plans to continue to include more sizes as her funding allows.

Linen is currently in the driver’s seat of muumuu styles right now, but one day Jess hopes to include more natural fibers such as cotton, washable silks and wool.

I asked Jess which piece is her favorite (always an insightful question to ask designers) and her answer was twofold.

My favorite piece is always changing! For a long while it was the Apron jumper. That was the first style I created and it’s been the most popular, which thrills me. Now, my favorite is the Coverall. I like the all-in-one aspect of it. It’s truly for the laziest dresser, which I have become. I also have always been a button down and jeans kind of a gal and the coverall is like a one-piece button down!

Don’t forget to swing back by the blog on Thursday – I’m so excited to show you how I’ve been wearing my muumuu jumpsuits!! I’ll also dive into the details on fit, function, and anything else you want to know.

  1. Ohhhh my goodness these pieces are beautiful! Gosh, I would like to live in linen and clogs all four seasons! Loving this! :)

    1. SAME! I get jealous of people who do. But I think I’d also get bored without seasons. Excited to show you guys tomorrow what kinds of shoes I am styling the jumpsuits with!
