Wearing Lately: Simple Looks + Bare Ankles

In my previous ‘Wearing Lately’ post I shared how I felt a little off in my styling. That was due in part to essentially adding too many new items at once. You can read more here. Thankfully, the last few weeks have been much better. I’m trying not to overthink my outfits, and I’m not shying away from wearing what I want, even if that means repeated items or ‘boring’ outfits. It didn’t hurt that we had some unseasonably warm and dry weather, which in all honesty, just makes getting dressed easier.

Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing lately.

Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | High Rise Straight Jean, AGOLDE (self-cropped) | Rain Boots (10) c/o Alice + Whittles, Use the discount code SLOWFASHION to save 10% | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana | Initial Necklace, Nashelle | Slice Hoops, c/o Baleen

I love a good black and tan combo. In my quest to support my love for brown, I think I’ve neglected to remember the importance of black in offsetting the beloved color.

This sweater was a gift from the Spanish knitwear brand L’Envers. Last year, I bought the Claude Cardigan and have shared it repeatedly on the blog (see below too!). This sweater is the Juliette Jumper in brown. It’s beautiful and amazing, and I have already worn it several times! It’s so warm, has the most beautiful color, gorgeous texture, and feminine puff sleeves. All the things you could want in a sweater and then some!

Alpaca Cardigan, Zady (no longer available, love this beautiful, reversible option) | Striped Long Sleeve Tee (M), Everlane | High Rise Straight Jean, AGOLDE (self-cropped) | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather | Circle Bag, Baggu

This outfit is a reminder to me of the difference a unique accessory can make to an outfit. I don’t reach for this bag very often because it’s TINY. But I love the color and the shape. I’ve used it a handful of times over the last two weeks, and each time it seems to elevate my look more than my normal bags typically do. Side note: I love the color palette here: black and blue with tan and cream, so pretty!

Alpaca Crew (M), c/o Everlane | Clyde Work Pant (4/R), in cotton twill, Elizabeth Suzann, SS17 (similar in cotton canvas) | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather | Classic Shoulder Bag, Cuyana | Initial Necklace, Nashelle | Legacy Hoops, ABLE

This look was definitely a favorite of mine, and worn on one of those warm days. Too bad the photo is a little grainy! Sometimes I forget to take my photos while there is optimal light in the house. The window for that is so narrow right now. The sun sets before 4:30, and some afternoons are so cloudy it gets dark even earlier!

Coatigan, Aritzia (color from last season) | Merino Turtleneck, thrifted (similar in cotton) | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter (from FW16) (love this option) | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather | Circle Bag, Baggu | Legacy Hoops, ABLE

Wide leg love! These pants don’t often see a lot of action in the winter because I’m usually too lazy to wear tights under them. But on this day I wore enough wool on top (the turtleneck and jacket are both 100% wool) that I stayed warm! I absolutely adore the color palette and lines of this look. The little circle purse drives it home!

Long Puffer (M), c/o Everlane | Donegal Sweater, Everlane (a few years old, similar option) | Liza High Waist Straight Leg Jean (28), Reformation | Boots, Loeffler Randall, no longer available (similar option, love these too) | Belt (old, from high school!) | Circle Bag, Baggu | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady | Padlock Pendant, c/o Aide-Mémoire

The day I wore this outfit, I sent a photo to my friend Paige. I was musing about how much I love a good, simple look like this, but it rarely translates to a blogger’s audience because it’s so simple and basic. BUT, sometimes that’s just what I want to wear. And I felt so good in it.

In case you’re curious about this puffer, I wrote more about it here. In a nutshell: I really like it.

Juliette Jumper, c/o L’Envers | Donegal Sweater, Everlane (a few years old, similar option) | White, Modern BF Jeans (28, with altered waist), Everlane (probably more like this fit) | Clog Boots (42), No.6 (similar) | Scarf, knitted by mom | Necklace, gift from husband

I got super crafty on this day and layered my sweaters! For some reason I rarely think to do this, but it’s extremely effective. It was Saturday and I was headed out to do some serious grocery shopping and I didn’t want to be encumbered by a jacket. This was a winning combo for me!

Baronne Duster (M), Esby (sold out, but I’ve seen a few versions around including this one and similar versions from this shop) | Alpaca Crew (M), Everlane | Jeans, Vintage Levi’s (501) (similar) | Sneakers (41), Veja | Classic Tote, c/o Cuyana | Padlock Pendant, c/o Aide-Mémoire

Do you ever have something you want for a long time, and then when you finally get it, you don’t love it? That’s how I am feeling right now about this duster. It might be because I’m trying to wear it in the wrong season. (I think it would look better with some exposed ankle.) Or it might be because it’s the exact same color as some of my shoes and bags, which makes it feel a little hard to wear. Definitely not giving up on it though. Hoping time and experimenting with styling will help!

Claude Cardigan, L’envers | Model No.20 Shift Dress in Railroad Stripe Linen, c/o Pyne & Smith | Terilyn Booties (41), Sevilla Smith, Undyed Leather | Canvas Tote, old (similar)

This outfit was an unexpected favorite for me! I got inspired to wear some of my dresses after seeing how well Katie does it in Alaska. Initially I put on my clog boots with this outfit, but switched out for the Sevilla Smith booties. The pull to wear these shoes is very strong because they feel so good on my feet. I am starting to liken them to Birkenstocks for cold weather, haha. They are attractive shoes, but in sort of a nonconventional way like Birkenstocks. I was a little unsure of the black tights with them at first, but I ended up really liking the contrast. Sometimes black tights and black boots just feels too dressy for me on a weekday. Tan booties ended up being a great way to dress this look down (and still feel like myself).

Sevilla Smith Booties

Happy Friday to you! I hope your weekend is shaping up to be filled with fun, friends and relaxing!

    1. Thank you Krystal! Your comment has been echoing in my head. It’s inspiring me to want to wear shorter hemlines a little more often!

As for my booties, I got the 2cm. Is that what you have?

  1. I have so much outfit inspiration from this post! I have several similar pieces and am excited to try them out in similar combinations. Thanks!

  2. I love a “good simple look.” It helps me think about how to look pulled together on an ordinary day.

  3. Your “simple and basic” look was my favorite outfit of the week, so it translated well for me!

  4. Hi! I actually have a question about the Everlane puffer jacket you highlighted in your last post. Some of the reviews mention that the stuffing starts to come out of the coat at some point. Have you experienced this? This would be a dealbreaker for me if so but sometimes reviews can’t be trusted (which is why I read your site!). Anyway, any thoughts on this would be great! Thanks!!

    1. Hi Ella! I noticed a tiny bit of filler came out one time, through the weave of the fabric, but nothing else since. Everlane has pretty great customer service. I do think if your jacket turned out to have a major issue, they would let you return it.
And thank you for saying you trust me, that means so much!

  5. Your “simple and basic” look is very similar to what I wear much of the time, so it certainly works with this audience. Some days relatable is just as good if not better than aspirational. :-)

  6. I definitely know the feeling of getting something I’ve been wanting and not loving it. I’ve gotten really good about quickly deciding to return things (even if I have to pay shipping). In your case, you may be right that it’s just the wrong season, but I feel like I’m at a point in my life where I have enough, so if I’m going to bring something new in, it has to be something I really love.

    1. Agreed on the ‘I have to love it’ part!! And yes, I tend to buy off season sometimes, which isn’t the wisest idea. Will see how this one plays out in the spring.

  7. I’m still getting through all my blog reading, so this is UBER late but you know, I think my fave is the look with the khaki puffer. I know you said it’s ‘boring’, but I personally love that classic kind of outfit. It’s so easy to replicate too – think I’ll be bookmarkng that one for next year when autumn hits xx
