Fall Feature: Old-World Style meets Modern Life

This post is not sponsored, it was created in partnership with Son de Flor, makers of timeless linen dresses that bring nostalgia for a slow and simple pace of life. The dress and shirt featured today are gifted and if you make a purchase using my discount code, I will make a commission. As always, all content is original and contains my own ideas and real-life opinions. Thank you for supporting makers who are committed to responsible manufacturing.

Personal style is meant to be explored, pushed, challenged and re-imagined. But it is not really in my nature to do those things. However, writing about clothes and style means I often intersect with makers from different parts of the world with different approaches to style, exposing me to new perspectives.

This is where classic dressmakers Son de Flor come in. They opened my eyes to a new, old-world style of dressing. One that conjures mental images of picnics, slow food, long conversations, and romance. A way of getting dressed that is beautiful, and arguably more cozy than your favorite sweats.

Long, soft dresses aren’t something I normally wear. But this twill linen dress is so pretty I had to reconsider. It’s made from thick heavy-weight twill linen, a fabric I’ve never seen before. It’s almost double the thickness of the linen I am used to and, as always, I am a sucker for good fabric. As you can see from the photos, this dress is soft and full of movement.

This is the sort of thing that my tween self longed to wear. I lived on an old military base with pre-war housing and I think that, along with the books I read, sparked my imagination. I lived for the idea of what life would have been like 100 years ago; mostly I loved how the women wore long dresses. I think styling this dress with boots and a scarf among flowers scratched a decades-old itch.

And, of course, this dress is begging to be styled a second way: as a duster! The second outfit features a peach, linen shirt by Son de Flor, made from their regular-weight linen. It features long sleeves, tonal buttons and a delicate Peter Pan collar.

  1. I’ve been swooning over their dresses for months now! So nice to see them featured here. How would you say the weight of the linen compares to the Only Child rust linen from this season?

    1. Hi Jessica, the dress I am wearing here is a linen twill, so it’s actually a heavyweight linen, I don’t know quite how to describe it, almost like outerwear. It’s very soft and warm. The peach shirt is a lighter linen. I just compared it to the rust linen from OC, and I would say the peach is a tad bit lighter weight and quite a bit softer. I believe Son de Flor pre-softens their linen. The dresses are magic, aren’t they?!

  2. Wow I’ve been looking for something like this for awhile. I have a short sleeve shorter dress that doubles as a duster and I’ve been looking for the longer sleeve/longer counterpart! I love it!

  3. Oh, such a nice dress! And how nifty that it could double as a duster. I’ve never been a “dress”-kind-of-person myself, but this summer has made me rethink my relationship with dresses. And so this looks like a great addition to any wardrobe! Mine, in particular. :)
