What I Wore: Transition Weather

It suddenly feels like fall in the PNW. We’ve entered that time of year where the afternoons are still warm (hot) but the mornings and evenings are cool enough that a jacket or sweater is in order. It’s that awkward weather where I’m dressing for fall in the morning, and for summer by the afternoon. I’m not keen on being cold, nor sweaty, so right now it’s a layers game.

Side note: It seems, since having school-aged kids, summertime has shrunk. Anyone else feel that way?

Here’s what I’ve been wearing…

MONDAY:

ABLE, White Wide Leg Pants, Clara Wash

Striped Tank, Everlane | White Wide Leg Denim (28), c/o ABLE | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Backpack, c/o Everlane (sold out, love this one!)

Style Notes: As the temperatures have been shifting, I’ve enjoyed wearing some of my pants again! I love the minimal color palette here – black, white and cool tan. I think this is where I struggle in the colder months: keeping my colors (per outfit) balanced. Fingers crossed that I can take what I learned in summer and apply it to the coming months.

TUESDAY:

Clyde Shorts, Tradland Shirt

Striped Button Up, Tradlands (similar in short sleeve) | Clyde Work Short (6) in Linen, Elizabeth Suzann, SS17 | Huaraches (9.5), Nisolo | Vintage Sisal Bag, Etsy | Necklace, c/o Rebecca Mir Grady

Style Notes: I decided to take my own advice and try out a look from my three summer formulas, and this was a highlight of my week! At first, the button-up felt a little too serious for how I usually dress, and I knew a leather bag would have only furthered that vibe. So I opted for the vintage sisal, and I love the mix of boho and preppy!

WEDNESDAY:

Reifhaus Lou Jumpsuit

Hat, Brookes Boswell | Linen Jumpsuit (M), REIFhaus (same in organic triple gauze cotton) | Huaraches (9.5), Nisolo | Backpack, c/o Everlane (sold out, love this one!)

My daughter calls this part of the living room my ‘jungle.’ I thought it would be fun to pose with a bunch of my plant babies. From L-R: Monstera, gifted from a friend; Snake Plant, Home Depot; Rubber Tree, Trader Joe’s; Prayer Plant, local store. Hanging plant: Marble Queen Pothos, Portland Nursery.

Style Notes: A simple look for another summer day. To style this jumpsuit, I added a matching hat and shoes, and opted for a leather bag instead of my go-to straw bag of late. I think the latter would have made the look a little too costume-y for me.

THURSDAY:

Cream Layers, Everlane Day Glove, Reformation Crop Flood JeansCream Layers, Everlane Day Glove, Reformation Crop Flood Jeans

Sweater Jacket, c/o Hackwith Design House | Linen Peasant Top, Muumuu | Crop Flood Jeans (27), Reformation via Nordstrom | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Form Bag, c/o Everlane

Style Notes: We saw a big temperature shift on Thursday, and I was pretty excited to try out a new combination. I ordered this shirt a few weeks ago from a small batch maker in California. It’s made of weighty, Japanese linen, and I am in love! It’s basically the cream, feminine top of my dreams! You can see a lot more details in Friday’s photos.

FRIDAY:

Muumuu Linen Peasant Top Muumuu Linen Peasant Top

Linen Peasant Top, Muumuu | White, Modern BF Jeans (28, with altered waist), Everlane (probably more like this fit) | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Form Bag, c/o Everlane

I love this shirt so much I excitedly wore it two days in a row. I bought it on sale (which meant limited return abilities), and I was very nervous about the fit, given it’s pretty different from most of the stuff I own. But it turned out to be a home run! Sometimes, I feel too masculine in structured tops because I have square shoulders. This top works well for me because it is unstructured at the shoulders, and the linen has a beautiful drape! It’s nice and thick linen, so I look forward to wearing it into the winter.

Style Notes: This palette is everything! I am all over the white, cream, mocha and cognac combo. I thought the nearly all-white look would be really bold, but it’s not at all. Favorite look from the week!!

SATURDAY:

Denim Jacket, Levi’s (similar) | Linen Jumpsuit (M), REIFhaus (same in organic triple gauze cotton) | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Form Bag, c/o Everlane

Style Notes: Twice in one week with this jumpsuit! I didn’t even realize I did that until I sat down to compile this post. Proud outfit repeater right here (this time with different accessories).

Notes on the Form Bag: I don’t want to give too much away before I put together my review, but I’ll just say, this bag is surprising me.

SUNDAY:

Denim Jacket, Levi’s (similar) | Striped Tank, Everlane | Wide Pant, Lauren Winter (from FW16) (love this option) | Day Glove flat (10.5), c/o Everlane | Form Bag, c/o Everlane

Style Notes: Working hard to keep my color palette simple amidst the layers here. However, I really like that the shoes and the bag are different shades of brown. If I was wearing all blue with matching cognac accessories, it seems it would be a bit boring. I find that just as outfits often need a ‘third piece’ to feel complete, sometimes a ‘third color’ has the same effect.

So tell me, are you sweating or layering right now? If the latter, what’s your trick for making your layers work?

  1. It’s in the 90s this week in Virginia, but it gets cool at night, so I’ve just been throwing my Hackwith Design jacket on over whatever I’m wearing.

  2. I always love your outfit posts–especially so now that we are heading into fall. After the brief drizzle this past weekend my seven year old said “It finally feels like Portland again mom!”

Unrelated question: I’m in Portland too and I wonder if you would share who does your tailoring? I was finally able to score a pair of second-hand Kamms (!!) and now I need to find someone I can trust to alter them. Thanks!

    1. That’s too funny! My kids seem to often shrink away from the sun – true Oregonians as well! I go to DZ Alterations downtown (near 405). I haven’t taken my Kamms there yet, but I know someone else who did, and she said they did a great job! Best of luck!

  3. Love your outfits this week! The layers are practical, and still preserve the spirit and colors of summer.

  4. I’m so happy I ordered the shirt after seeing you wear it! I love the all white outfit. Gorgeous.

  5. I will wait (anxiously) for your Everlane Form Bag review! Love your outfits…the one on Friday is a winner!

    1. Thank you Calu! I loved Friday too. The Form Bag is very unique, it’s a great mixture of chic/casual and functionality!

  6. Love all of these outfits!! I think these are some of your best ever!! I’m so jealous of you getting to wear pants and layers…it’s still in the 90s here in nyc (and super-humid) but you’re definitely giving me ideas for when we get cooler weather in a few days! PS hell yeah to white jeans after Labor Day. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  7. Legit still sweating here in FL! I’m not even sure if there’s a way for me to layer. The key is air-conditioning haha!!! I’ve been subbing this week at a high school since I don’t have a job at the moment and it’s been an excuse to get out all my jeans and wear my overalls!! Usually for me I wear more boots, sweaters or scarves help layer in the winter when it’s slightly cool! I also feel like neck scarves are a great way to layer and trick my outfit into looking more fall-ish even when it’s 95 out. =)
