One Dress 2 Ways: Sweet + Sassy

What has two sleeves, a long skirt and is fit to wear for many events? What makes you feel feminine and tomboyish at the same time? What is special to slip on because it’s handmade from beautiful linen that gets better with each wear?

This dress.

Hard to be believe it can be so many things at once, but it can, and it does them oh so well.

I bought my first Pyne & Smith dress last summer and wore it many times: on a trip to San Francisco, throughout the summer, and even once in the winter with strategic layers. Pyne & Smith dresses are meant for everyday use. They are the kind you wear gardening, to the playground, to a concert, on a picnic, as many ways as you can dream up (you can see all kinds of fun examples in the fan group on Facebook). They have the potential to be decidedly feminine (just add flats or clogs) or decidedly tomboy (just add sneakers and a skateboard). Each dress is cut and sewn in California at a small, female-owned business.

My partnership with Pyne & Smith.

For this post I’m teaming up with Pyne & Smith to show you how I’m styling their Model No.17 midi dress, and to bring you a special discount (see the end of the post). I bought my first dress from them (the white one) and the gingham one featured in this post was a gift as part of this partnership. I was not paid to create this content, but I will make a small commission if you make a purchase with my discount code. I love this brand, and I am fortunate to have gotten to know Joanna (the founder and designer) via the interwebs. I believe wholeheartedly in her and her wonderful brand.

Let’s get to the styling!

SWEET

The Model No.17 dress appealed to my new affection for midi length skirts and dresses. My whole life I avoided that style because I didn’t think I had the gams for it, but it turns out, I really like myself in midi lengths. They are universally flattering, entirely utilitarian and, my favorite, chic.

It feels a little contrary to my internal style compass to dress this number up, my go-to approach with linen is usually casual. But in the interest of creatively pushing myself, I wanted to see how I could style this in a dressy manner. Simple platforms nicely balance the bold pattern and minimal jewelry rounds out the look.

SASSY

For me, the demure shape of this dress begs for contrast. I knew right away I wanted to pair it with sneakers and an edgy leather jacket. It makes this outfit as practical as jeans and a tee, but a lot more fun.

I got this dress in the mail about a month ahead of this collaboration and it’s been so hard to wait to wear it! But I didn’t want to scoop myself and have it show up on one of my ‘What I Wore’ posts before sharing this post. The gingham is a beautiful alternative to a sea of solids in my closet. For the rest of this summer, I look forward to wearing this dress in the city, to the beach, to the park, on a car trip, and maybe somewhere fancy.

THE DETAILS

All Pyne & Smith dresses are made from 100% flax linen, which means they’re engineered to last and get better with wear. What I like about Pyne & Smith is that their designs are truly timeless, brought back season after season. They are not in a rush to reinvent their product offering each year, making the dresses you bought last year feel dated. Instead their small batch releases remind me how much I love what I already own, and make me daydream about my next adventure in my P&S dress.

SIZING:

My Pyne & Smith dresses are size small. I typically wear a size 6, and have a small bust. You can read more detailed information about their sizing here.

STYLES:

In my closet I currently have a white linen Pyne & Smith dress very similar to this one. I also love the black version, and in the fall, I almost certainly will be buying this one.

DISCOUNT:

Seasons + Salt readers are invited to shop the entire Pyne & Smith collection at 10% off using the code: SEASONS10. This code will only be available for two weeks, it expires June 21st.

Do you own any Pyne & Smith dresses? If so, how do you style them?

  1. Love this dress, the styling and the photos. I have to ask who does the photos for these shoots? i always love how on point they are, and how you they are.
I’m struggling with maintaining a strict photo style when always going to different locations.

      1. Hi Andrea I have a question (please forgive me I couldn’t find a way to comment in the Birkenstock section) 😂 but I was wondering if the cork sealer could work for my Birks because at the back of the shoe the cork is chipping and it’s pretty noticeable so do you think the cork sealer will help it from chipping any more?

        1. I bet it will at least stop the chipping! They are fully repairable, so if the sealer doesn’t help the chipping, take them in to a local cobbler.

  2. I just bought my first Pyne & Smith dress (actually, first TWO dresses) after “pining” over then for two years. I was extremely nervous because I’m pregnant at the moment and worried I was buying something that wouldn’t work for these last couple months of pregnancy, but instead I feel like I just hit the jackpot! Hoping to do my own blog post (or two) featuring them and wearing them with a bump. ;) Love that you are promoting this brand and I have nothing but great things to say about Joanna as well! I hope to get to have the honor of working with her in the future!

    1. Yay, I love hearing this! I wish I had known about dresses like these when I was pregnant (and nursing!). I can’t wait to see what you share about your experience with Pyne & Smith. From what I’ve seen on IG, your dresses are so cute on you!

  3. Alright, I would not hesitate to purchase this style if it were a black and white check, but the product description lists as navy. However, you paired it with black accessories and I am not noticing a major tone difference. Is it just such a dark neutral or does it have a stronger blue tone in person? Love both of these stylings! Clearly a versatile piece.

    1. I would call it a true navy, it’s very dark. I am a big fan of pairing black and navy, I do it often! Great question!

  4. I am a huge fan of Pyne & Smith and own several dresses and skirts. This checkered print has gotten a lot of compliments. Do get the black and brown striped dress- it’s beautiful!

  5. I love this! And yes, navy and black are these best combo. Also, agreed on the brown and black stripe – I have it and love it. Looks great w tights and ankle boots, and just a little gold jewelry. I have the dress you show here, but in blue/white stripe, and I like to wear it with simple sandals (usually salt waters or No. 6) or espadrilles, plus a summer hat. :)

  6. I have this same dress in the cardinal red and love it so much. I feel classy and feminine every time I wear it. I’m mildly obsessed with P&S (currently have 5 dresses and always looking for my next one).

  7. I would love to order a dress! I can’t decide between XS and S. My measurements are right in between. The small looks great on you. Did you try an XS?

    1. I did not, I am very rarely an XS. Usually I’m right between S and M in most brands. You might want to send them an email and see what the recommend.

  8. Ahhh! I literally JUST ordered my first Pyne & Smith dress on the 5th! So sad I missed the discount and the chance to support you! Joanna has been so nice to communicate with already, and I’ve been watching for just the right dress for me to be offered for so long! I love how you e styled yours; can’t wait to get mine and pretty much not take it off all summer!

    1. Oh man! I am sorry! I should have given a heads up! I will try to do that next time! I am glad you’ve had a good experience with P&S so far. Keep me posted on how it works for you!
