the Weekly Rundown: ‘Recycling is the 3rd R’ + How to Wear Monochrome

Seasons and salt blog

SUSTAINABILITY:

There is a recycling crisis in our country, especially in the west. Due to the trickle down effect of China’s change of heart about accepting recyclable materials from the US, many of the items we leave at the curb for recycling are going straight to landfills. This is our wakeup call to stop using single-use plastics, coffee cups, straws, utensils and more. As one person quoted in this article pointed out, recycling is the third ‘R,’ let’s start reducing and reusing first.

Hackwith Design House is committed to sustainability, and is taking steps to be responsible for the entire lifecycle of their clothing. Next week they are launching their new Sustain Shop, where customers can shop pre-loved + restored or slightly flawed new HDH items at discounted prices. You can ship back old HDH items for store credit.

MINIMALISM:

An alternative view on minimalism. Perhaps it’s not about paring down, but instead, paring down what we want?

STYLE:

I’m so taken by this Week of Outfits post over on Cup of Jo. It’s inspired me to get a baseball hat (love the ones coming soon to Everlane!) And, there is a genius idea for how to deal with stains on white garments.

Tips on how to wear monochrome, and it doesn’t mean all black.

ABLE just launched a small raffia bag collection, and I think this one is my favorite!

READING:

I finished up We Were the Lucky Ones last week, and I could not put it down. It’s the true story of a Jewish family from Poland that gets separated during World War 2.

I’m currently peeking at Laura’s summer reading list and taking notes.

  1. I’m going to have to check out We Were the Lucky Ones! If you like that genre, you should check out the Book Thief. I read it along time ago, but I still think about it. (And thanks for the blog post shout-out! )

  2. Thanks so much for including me in your latest round up, Andrea! I loved that post from apartment Therapy on an alternative view to minimalism. I’m good at step 1 (in cycles!) but need to get better at step 2! x

  3. If you get amazon prime, I encourage you to watch “plastic china” ; just the first fifteen minutes to understand the scope of the plastic problem, and the last fifteen minutes to see the devastating affects plastic recycling has on the Chinese peoples health (covered in tumors). It is shameful that we as a country consume and think it is acceptable to ship our problem elsewhere.
