Virtual Pop-Up: Only Child + Pons by Avarcas

Happy Friday friends!

Just in case you missed it yesterday – I’m participating in a Virtual Pop-Up with some of my favorite blogger ladies. We’ve joined forces to help connect you guys with brands that value the same things you do – ethics and sustainability – in their manufacturing and business practices. We are showcasing pieces from these brands to help other women see them in real-life situations. We want to share insights on fit and feel, and help make your job as a conscious-consumer easier. It can be hard to find brands that align with your personal values, and that’s where we come in. At the end of this post I’ll share links to shop these items, along with other Virtual Pop-Up participants and a special discount code.

Today I’m styling another piece by Only Child – the Luzon Tie Front Top in Cotton along with a my first pair of Pons by Avarcas.

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Only Child. If you’re a regular reader, you’ve seen this brand mentioned many times before. It’s a one-woman shop, everything is designed, cut and sewn by the talented woman behind the label – Haley Tucker – in her beautiful Oakland Studio. She also happens to have a great Instagram feed where you can get sneak peeks of her process, along with a look at her creative space.

I chose the Luzon Tie Front Top from her spring line because I was really drawn to the subtle pattern on the fabric and the tie front. These two small details really elevate this from a ‘shirt’ to a ‘blouse.’ And that let’s me get dressed and make a statement with almost zero effort.

Fit: This top comes in five sizes – XS, S, M, L, and XL. I am wearing a medium, which is 22″ across and 21″ long. The bottom of the top hits right at my mid-rise pants (as seen above), and a few inches below my high-rise pants. I typically wear a small or medium in most brands, or a size 6. I have broad shoulders so I was concerned the sleeves would not flatter my shape but, it turns out, I love them! This style of sleeve is a perfect balance to my hips, giving me a nice hourglass shape.

Fabric: The fabric is light and breezy, and I expect it will be perfect for hot summer days and nights. It’s machine washable and line dries in a jiffy.

Versatility: I look forward to pairing this with jeans, pants and select skirts throughout the spring and summer. I wore it a few weeks ago tucked under a leather jacket when I went out to dinner with my husband and loved it!

Pons – have you seen them? I started seeing them around last summer and was a bit intrigued by the almost peekaboo toe. Over the winter, when I was trying to warm myself up with thoughts about what I wanted to wear in the spring and summer, I added Pons to my summer list. I really liked the way they looked worn-in, and I loved the idea of a rubber sole on a beautiful leather sandal. Having traction is always sexy, no?

Fit: Shoes are always a funny thing for me to shop for because I have big feet. I am usually between a 9.5 and 10, or 40 and 41 in EURO sizing. I took an educated guess and ordered these in a 40, and got it right. Any bigger would have been too big. The website noted that you want them to fit snug because they stretch out and break in a bit with wear.

Materials: The tops and the insoles are both leather, which is my favorite choice for a shoe because they always break in nicely and eventually form to my feet. The bottoms are rubber with just the right amount of tread. Fun fact: original versions of this Spanish shoe used to be made with recycled tire bottoms. Today, all authentic Pons are still made in Spain.

Comfort: This is a big consideration for me and shoes. My feet are picky and they like to feel good. I would put the comfort level on these somewhere between a flip flop and a Birkenstock. They are really easy and comfortable to wear and walk in. They are a bit flat on the insole, but I am hoping the leather will soften with time and that will change. I love how easy they are to just slip on, no buckles or ties necessary, making them a perfect grab and go shoe! I’ve already been wearing them on warmer days. I am sure they’ll be one of my go-to shoes this summer.

I also love that Avarcas makes Pons for kids! My girls always love to dress like their mom, so I’m considering buying these for one of their two pairs of sandals I will buy this summer. I love shoes that are good for their little feet!

QUESTIONS  //  Your turn! Do you have any questions about the fit of Pons or this top by Only Child? I’d love to answer them.

SHOP  //  The Virtual Pop-Up runs through April 10th, and you can use the code: SANDS1000 to save 10% at the following places:

Only Child – I love my Luzon Tie Top, and my Mara Tunic Dress is definitely a closet favorite. I also have my eye on this classic top!

Pons by Avarcas – In addition to black, I think these sandals look great in Classic BrownNote: the Avarcas site displays prices in CAD. If you’re ordering from the US, I suggest you use a CAD to USD converter before placing your order, your price will probably be lower than you expect!

Two Fold Clothing – I’m definitely crushing over this blush tee. If I didn’t already have one, I’d be ordering it!

Pyne and Smith – These handmade linen dresses are surely the kind you would pass down to your children. The white pin striped and indigo v-neck are my favorite two.

Shop Free Label – Chic basics for an active lifestyle. I could totally see myself hiking (or brunching) in this muscle teeNote: Again, prices are in CAD.

  1. This outfit is so perfect and so you!
I love the tunic you wore earlier this week but need it to be longer since I am all torso!
Thanks for the sandal tip, I might be in the market for another pair since I’ll be pregnant this summer and won’t wear my clogs too much I am thinking.
Are you doing the 10×10 spring remix?
    Have a good weekend! Xo!

    1. Hi Jodie, I, too, am all torso and I ordered this dress and sent Haley an email asking her to add an inch to the length. She was happy to oblige, as she makes each piece to order and it’s a simple fix. Hopefully by the time it reaches me there will be many sunny days ahead!

    2. Hi Jodie! I hope you saw Lindsey’s great feedback about the length of this dress. I really like the Pons, they’re just so easy!

I am sitting this 10×10 out. But may do one (or something similar) next month! :)

  2. Those shoes are really adorable. I’m very interested, since the sole is rubber–I see a lot of similar flats that seem so slippery!

  3. This is one of my favorite looks on you yet……probably because I would wear it in a heartbeat! :-) I love all of Only Child’s line and would love this top in the beige linen. Love those sandals, too. I need a new pair for summer and was looking at Birks Gizah in copper, but these are cute as well. I need a lot of support though because of my back. Have a great weekend!

    1. Hey Rebecca! Gizeh’s are a great option too! Agreed, I love the this tie top in the burgundy too! Hope you guys have a relaxing weekend!

  4. I bought a pair of Pons a couple of years ago in a 39 (was an 8.5) and promptly outgrew them during my twin pregnancy. I love the idea but have been reluctant to try another pair because my now 9-9.5 feet didn’t get wider and I’m having volume problems in shoes. I’m worried the flat insoles and width of the Pons (I found the 39s a bit wide) just won’t work.

    1. I could see why that would be tricky! My daughter was low volume feet too, and I hope these aren’t too wide for her. You could always try the huarache style sandals from Nisolo, those are super cute!

    2. really? I’m a 9.5 in about every brand and the 40 were a hair too big… the leather stretches and the 39s are perfect for me. it was weird to buy since my Birks are a 40 also, but the leather stretched to fit my feet perfectly.

      1. I find the Pons sizing to be generous as well! I wear a 41 in Birks, and the 40 Pons fit me well, correlating with what you just said about your sizing. :)

  5. I love Only Child! I have the Madelyn coat and the Elliot Dress. Just ordered the Mara dress and I’m tempted to get the Jojo jumpsuit. I’m amazed at how her pieces can work on differ body types. I’m much shorter than you and not thin but the coat looks great on you and I always get compliments as well. The top looks great on you! As for the Pom, I had considered th de in the past as espadrilles are a go to for me for most of the year (tropical climate) but I’m weaning myself off of flatter shoes for foot health reasons. I have to see if they have a slight wedge version (at least a 1 inch is good per my podiatrist).

    1. Thanks for the feedback Tania! It sounds like you’re just as much a fan of Only Child as I am! That Jojo jumpsuit looks amazing! If I didn’t already have a similar one, I’d be all over it!

What are your go-to types of shoes for comfort Tania?

  6. I had a knockoff pair of pons several years ago but I accidentally washed one of them!! They actually weren’t totally destroyed, but I could never find the other one so that was that.

  7. I’m seriously considering the Pons. I only wish they didn’t have the logo on the side!!

  8. Love this outfit! The pattern on that shirt is perfect.
I’ve had my eye on the Pons for this summer. Do you feel like you have to grip with your toes when you walk? I have less patience for that than I used to!

    1. Definitely not! If they were too long, probably, but the sizing is great for me, and they are nice and snug to the bottoms of my feet.

  9. You sold me on the Pons – and even though I love the black ones, I’m breaking out of my black shoe rut and trying a different color.

I also love the Luzon top, but I’m right on the line between two sizes and I’m still thinking about which size to buy. . . based on your very helpful information, the smaller might work better because it looks like there are a few inches of ease in the chest.

    1. I hope that size works for you Susan, glad I could help. Sometimes when I’m stumped on online garment sizes I compare the measurements of what I want to buy with the measurements of something in my closet, to get an idea of how the new top will fit on me. Also, did you see Morgan (@thegarmentlife on instagram)’s posts? She shared a lot of pictures of women in the this top, and included their measurements. Just in case that helps!

  10. Quick question… which are more comfortable, the pons or the huaraches in your “kitchen” post? I have high arches and usually need arch support. I love my Birks but would like a nicer casual summer shoe. Thanks!

    1. Hi Charis! I totally have high arches too, so I feel you on this. That’s part of the reason why I live in Birks so much in the summer. I just put one of each of the shoes on my feet, a huarache and a Pon, and it’s almost a toss-up on which is more comfortable, but if I had to choose one, I’d say the Pons are slightly more supportive/comfortable. Good luck!! Let me know if you have any more questions!

    1. Thanks Lisa! I hope you find your jeans! I bought these from a Levi’s store and then cut the hems off. I also have a pair I got from a vintage shop that i love dearly!
