Turkey Day Dressing + Black Friday

Happy Thanksgiving week!

I’m climbing out of my holiday hibernation to bring you a quick post before I head back to my unscheduled week. We just got back from a few days at the coast, which were wonderful and relaxing. The sun was out, and there were few chores to be had. Exactly like a short holiday should be.

Later this week we’ll gather with both sides of our family for Thanksgiving meals, hopefully a walk or two, and of course, some games. One of my favorite things about getting together with extended family is the games. My grandparents started me out young by teaching my brother and I a handful of card games, along with proper dealing etiquette. It’s fun now, to teach that to my girls as they begin to reach an age where they can play games.

But this post isn’t about games, it’s about what I’m wearing this Thanksgiving and where I may or may not be shopping come Black Friday.

I think I may have cracked the code on how to wear my favorite jumpsuit during these cooler weather months. It’s made from a linen-blend fabric, which makes it fabulous for the summer heat, but much too breezy when it’s cold. I tried layering it with tights (didn’t look right), heavy sweaters (too much bulk) and socks (too much going on at the ankles), and was about to relegate it to my spring and summer closet when I had one more idea. Following a hunch I threw on a pair of my workout pants underneath, which hit just below the knee. Instant warmth! The extra layer on the bottom paired with the warm cashmere on top = perfectly cozy. Add this Phoenix necklace, and I have just the right amount of festive and cozy for the big turkey day.

On Black Friday and Holiday Sales

I truly have mixed feelings about the concept of ‘Black Friday.’ I understand why commerce is important, and that retailers hope to move into the black at this onset of holiday shopping, but shopping just because it’s a ‘good deal’ isn’t really a good deal for anyone. I noticed the other day when I saw an advertisement for a Black Friday sale (in my email or Instagram feed, I can’t remember) that I felt a tug to go shop for something from that particular place, simply because they were offering a sale. I wanted to track something down because it was a ‘good deal.’

Now, here’s a quick refresh: I am trying to shop seasonally from a very short list. I am carefully honing my winter list of three, and intend to stick staunchly to that (save for a few collaborations). Dodging in and out of sales will very quickly muddy the waters unless I stick to my list. Which brings me to my next point, Black Friday can serve you well if you use it intentionally. Let’s say I was in the market for a leather jacket (not this year, but hopefully next!), it would be a fabulous idea to pop over the Shopbop and utilize their Black Friday discounts. One could easily save hundreds on an item they were already planning to buy. That’s making it work for you.

On that note, here are a few sales that might help you out.

1 | Reifhaus 25% off now through Monday, use code ‘HOLIDAZE25’ (Reifhaus makes my very favorite jumpsuit, pictured above, and I am swooning over it in denim as well!)

2 | Shop Boswell 25 % off now through 11/30, use code ‘FRIENDSANDFAMILY’ (The have unique housewares, and I love this dress and this skirt.)

3 | Shopbop up to 25% off now through Monday, use code ‘GOBIG16’ (This dress is beautiful, and it would look great with these cozy merino tights, and this is on my super wishlist.)

4 | Nisolo has several pairs of shoes up to 40% off. (Including my favorite oxfords!)

5 | Belvele up to 50% Friday only, and 20% off Friday through Monday, use code ‘GIVEANDSAVE’ (This sweater is perfection, and I’ve been eyeing this jumpsuit.)

6 | Sword & Plough 20% off now through 11/29, use code ‘blackfriday’

And if shopping is not on the agenda this holiday, it might be worth your time to revisit one of my favorite posts from last year – 9 Things To Do After Dinner on Thanksgiving (Besides Shop). I am particularly looking forward to #3 and #7.

To all my U.S. friends, have a lovely Thanksgiving! And to my international friends, cheers to humpday. I’ll catch you all on the other side.

xo,
Andrea

  1. I just LOVE this jumpsuit on you. Heck it even makes me want one! Haha. And I couldn’t agree more about the piece about making a day notorious for its huge sales *working for you.* As opposed to buying something you wouldn’t otherwise buy — or at the very least haven’t thought through. I myself will be utilizing your tips — and probably smashing pumpkins while simultaneously bringing out Christmas decorations! :) Happy Thanksgiving friend!

    1. Ah, it’s always such a pleasure having you around these parts!! I’m loving your overalls, they are so damn cute on you! Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your crew. Oh, and I breeched the Christmas music wall today. ;)

  2. That jumpsuit looks so comfy! I’ve never really seen myself ever wearing one, but it looks so cozy I might have to go try one out ;)
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Oh, sale season…I love your advice about taking advantage only if it works for a well planned purchase. I’m going to need your help with that one! I love what you did with your jumper – so smart with the extra layer on bottom.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. I like how you styled the jumpsuit! The camel colour works really well with it, I´m actually considering expanding my colours to camel and more cognac.
Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving, I´m jealous! But actually today I´m going to a calligraphy class, it´s something I´ve wanted to do for over 2 years so it´s a pretty good day too :)

We have very few black friday deals here, but I utilised one yesterday and got two pairs of tights ;) Are you getting anything?

    1. Hello friend! A calligraphy class sounds awesome! I remember having a calligraphy pen as a girl, and I wish I still had it!

I haven’t really done any Black Friday shopping, but I have actually been browsing tights! I’m trying to decide if I want wool ones or more nylon ones. Do you have any favorite tights?
