One Dress, Three Ways

2016-08-10_0001

A multi-use item in my closet is definitely one my most satisfying sartorial accomplishments. Today, I am sharing with you my newest little workhorse: the Cotton Poplin Collarless Shirtdress by Everlane. (Does anyone else notice that their items seem to have the longest names ever?)

I was immediately intrigued when this dress popped up on my radar while recently browsing Everlane’s site, and decided to put some of my referral credits to work. I was a little unsure when the dress first arrived, but decided to put it to the test to see how many ways I could wear it. I remembered a blog post on Style This Life about three ways to style a long-sleeved dress, and here we are!

It’s really a great summer-to-fall piece. I’ve already worn it a few times, and it is ridiculously easy to wear. I think that’s why I’m so drawn to dresses/jumpsuits/one pieces, they’re just so simple. It’s almost impossible to mess them up. It makes me a little nervous for the fall, when I’ll need to layer more to stay warm. When I start adding together multiple items, I always seem to get stuck. But it will be an adventure, right? Hopefully, I’ll continue to learn more with each season, and keep feeling comfortable and put-together in my clothes.

We’ve established that I like simple outfits, and one-piece dressing. A close second is when I can utilize one item in many ways, like I mentioned above. Perhaps it appeals to the thrifty side of me. I think it also appeals to the side of me who wants to do more with less. :)  Here’s a little breakdown of how I styled this dress in three different ways.

Winter Dress:

After lots of Everlane orders I’ve come to appreciate their appreciation for fabrics. It seems so much of what they sell is 100% natural fibers, whether it’s cotton, cashmere, linen, wool or silk, and that makes the quality of any given item really stand out. The better the fabric, the better the garment, and the more I want to wear it. I used to be so flippant about the fabrics I bought, never bothering to look at the tags, never bothering to care if it was 100% polyester or some other non-natural fiber. I’m thankful for what I’ve learned, and I’m also cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter! ;)

I’m excited to experiment with wearing this dress in the winter, with maybe tights or leggings too, and some really cute ankle boots.

Summer Dress:

I wore this dress exactly as pictured to a summer barbecue a few weeks ago and it marked a stride I’m hitting with my personal style: confident and comfortable. Man it felt good. I think those are the results of honing in on your personal style – something that takes time, but is a worthy endeavor.

Sporty Dress:

This outfit is by far the most stretching of the trio for me. I haven’t worn a baseball cap in years! I found this off Poshmark, and I think I like it. But I have to re-learn how to wear them. Right now I kind of feel like Scotty Smalls from the Sandlot. I don’t even know what’s ‘cool’ anymore, curved bills or flat bills? Walking around in a Yankees cap also means I need to brush up on my MLB knowledge. I mean, isn’t knowing about Alex Rodriguez’s ‘retirement’ enough? ;)

What do you think? How would you style a dress like this?

Hope you’re enjoying your week! And if you haven’t yet, don’t forget to enter the amazing Favor Jewelry giveaway! :)

  1. All so cute Andrea! I’ve been so curious about this dress, and was thinking about it for wearing to the office. Still on the fence but you’ve pushed me a little closer toward it ;)

    1. I really, really like it Stacy! It’s a bit unexpected, and sophisticated. Let me know if you have any questions I can answer!

  2. I love your summer option – it’s perfect! I see you linked to 501’s for your winter option, are these a new pair or vintage? Have you read much about Levis and if they are trying to become more ethical in their production? I would love a pair of 501’s, but jeans for me need to have an option I can return if they don’t fit, which is not possible if you are buying vintage 501’s off of eBay or Etsy. Loved your sporty look, too! I am a huge baseball-type of hat wearer, but pay no attention to style! Ha! I wear my curved bill green Marine hat to support my daughter probably 4 days a week. Interesting note though…..every time I buy wine while wearing it I get carded. :-)

    1. Rebecca, you always make me laugh! You’re so lucky you still get carded sometimes!! I never do. Maybe I need to buy more wine to increase my odds. ;)

These jeans are new. Levi’s is one of the denim companies that I DO buy from, based on the strides they’ve made in the ethical fashion world. They still have a ways to go, but they were pioneers in the industry when it came to banning cotton from countries that use child-labor. You can read more on Projectjust.com (where I got my information). They are such a global apparel leader, that I think they are helping steer the industry in the right direction.

Jeans are certainly tricky to try and order online! I got mine at the Levi’s store we have in Portland, and I only tried on a million pairs to find the right one, eek! I bet there must be somewhere you could go to try on??

  3. Open, as a duster, over a tank top and a skinny-fitting knit bottom (skirt, pants, or leggings).
