The Art of Relaxing?

Seasons-and-salt-outfit-photo-5 Seasons-and-salt-outfit-photo-4 Seasons-and-salt-outfit-photo-3I hope you all have had a restful weekend! If there’s a Dad in your life, I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating him. We spent some time hiking in a gorgeous park in our ‘backyard,’ if you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen a photo from the trail. The air was cool and refreshing, and the kids loved walking by the creek. It was a busy weekend – seems it always is with three kiddos under five – but it was unusually relaxing!

I am a type-A, go-go-go kind of gal, so relaxing is not something that is second nature to me. Though, it’s something I thoroughly enjoy and need, it’s something I have to work at. (Ironic!) I find it’s hard for me to transition from mach-3 to sitting on the couch with a book. Does anyone else have this problem? It’s like I need to pitter around the house, tidy loose ends, wind-down and then relax. The only problem with that is by the time I am finally ready to sit and ‘relax’ for the evening it’s flippin’ 11 pm at night! Then that puts off getting to bed, which puts off getting up early… I’m trying to streamline my evening routine so I can transition to relaxing faster and spend more time doing what I really want to do. I’d love to hear how you shift to relax-mode at the end of your days.

  1. I am also a “pitterer”. :-) I usually can’t sit down and relax before bed unless the house is tidy. My husband goes to bed fairly early and for years I always went to bed several hours later because I was up doing stuff. When we moved, I made the decision to go to bed the same time as him, even if I didn’t go to sleep right then. It gives us a little time to chat before bed and forces me to have time to unwind without staying up until all hours of the night. After he turns off his light, I usually stay up in bed reading on my kindle until I get sleepy and sometimes have to fight the urge to go back downstairs to “pitter”! Although I only have 1 teenager now so it’s a little easier for me to just wrap things up and go to bed than when the kids were little. Sometimes you just HAVE to get stuff done after the little ones are in bed!

    1. So many truths Rebecca! I believe it’s so valuable to go to bed at the same time as my husband, for exactly the reason you said, that “pillow talk” is so key and important to me. And yes! It’s very hard to get much stuff done around here when my 15-month-old is running around emptying drawers and pulling things off shelves! I look forward to a more calm pace of life someday!
