Layering + a little DIY

It’s been a rather chilly April so far in the lovely Pacific NW. March was glorious, lots of warm, sunny days, but we are paying for it in April. It’s much colder, and a bit rainier, and this means most of my spring capsule has been on fast rotation as I layer up to keep warm!

Layering used to be a real struggle for me. I had a hard time feeling pulled together when I felt like I was falling apart with a mish-mash of clothing that wasn’t harmonious or painting a nice overall portrait of my style. I used to have this unspoken rule where I felt like I couldn’t buy long sleeve tops because I wouldn’t be able to wear them year-round. I was always trying to get the most of my clothes, and I hated to buy something I couldn’t wear ALL the time. How silly of me though. Let’s just say, in Oregon, one can wear long-sleeves 70% of the year! Instead I bought short-sleeved tops and relied on an arsenal of (semi-lame) cardigans.

After having my “no duh!” moment (it’s good to wear season-appropriate clothes and then let them rest off-season) I now buy long sleeves and find it’s a lot easier to layer for warmth and style.

Moving on… let’s talk about DIY style. I am NOT a do-it-yourself type. I love the spirit of DIY but I always fail in the execution of these types of things. I finally just got rid of some brass rings and webbing for the adorable bag I was going to make – like 5 years ago. Eek! I always think I can but in the end my lack of time prevents.  There is usually someone waiting on me for a snack or to have their bottom wiped. True story.

However, like every good rule, here is my exception. After thrifting this cute utility jacket for $5, I happened to come across this post and, feeling inspired, I took my scissors to the sleeves and never looked back.  I am such a terrible DIY’er that I didn’t even top stitch the edges.  Still looks cute and no fraying.

PS. It’s totally kosher for a gal over 30 to wear a fake leather jacket right? I think we’re calling them ‘vegan’ now. ;)
