10×10 Spring Challenge

Seasons + Salt 10x10
I am so excited to jump aboard a new series for the blog today – with a few other of my favorite bloggers: the 10×10 Spring Challenge!

Here’s how it works: I’ve selected 10 items from my closet to style into 10 different looks – using only those items. Bags and accessories don’t count. I was inspired by Lee of Style Bee who just kicked off her 10×10. I really just want to see if this is something I can pull off!

The purpose: For me, this is a totally an exercise in creativity. I love being inventive with what I wear, and I find I am the most adventurous when I set some serious limitations! In the winter I followed along with my friend Paige and we completed a 20 for 21 Challenge – that was no joke. We wore only 20 items for 21 days. It was hard, but it was really good because I learned a few lessons on contentment and creativity. I learned to love what I already have, and I learned how to push the boundaries a bit in my outfit building process. I’m hopeful the 10×10 Spring Challenge will net similar results.

These are the items I selected, and honestly, I’m a bit nervous about my non-diverse color palette! But these are a true reflection of the colors I wear daily. When choosing my items I went mostly on instinct, I pulled out all my favorites and tried to keep some balance to the number of tops and bottoms. These are the pieces I am wearing over and over right now, and I feel shape my style the a lot.

1 – Black mid-sleeve t-shirt / Everlane

2 – Second-hand Levi 501’s (newly distressed by me) / similar

3 – Black Cole Skirt / (c/o) Bridge & Burn

4 – A-Line light denim skirt by Steven Alan / similar

5 – Blank Canvas Top in Natural / Jamie + the Jones

6 – Striped Poplin Square Shirt / Everlane

7 – Elle Kimono Jacket / Only Child

8 – Boyfriend Fit Jean Jacket / Levi’s

Seasons + Salt 10x10-3

9 – Oliver Oxfords in Almond / Nisolo

10 – Ecuador Huarache Sandal / Nisolo

And there you have it! If you’d like to join in the fun, the more the merrier! Do you think you could create 10 looks with 10 items? :)

xo,
Andrea

  1. I totally want to join. I did it once already, and it solved all my dressing troubles for the following moth :) I just need a designated photographer, and really want to take the pics outside this time.
Looking forward to seeing your looks.

  2. So glad you’re joining me Andrea! I already love what I see here so I have no doubt you’ll put together some fabulous looks. It really is all about creativity and pushing yourself to try things you might not think of otherwise. I also think you’ll love the extra lean colour palette! Cheers to a fun challenge :) xoxo

  3. I love the color palette you pulled together! And I want to get a look at those distressed jeans ;) Thank you for encouraging me to do this – it will be fun!

  4. I’ve decided to do it too! Started yesterday, and I even surprised myself but coming up with a new combination of old favorites right off the bat. Here’s what I have:

    pale pink/light pattern silk skirt
    black tank dress
    denim shorts
    black high-waisted shorts
    white muscle tank
    slouchy gray linen tee
    short-sleeved chambray shirt
    green canvas jacket
    brown leather sandals
    black peep-toe/d’orsay flats

My first combo was the black tank dress with the gray tee layered over, and tied up a bit in a little knot over my right hip – I’d never thought to put those together before but I loved wearing it all day. Thanks for the inspiration and have fun!

    1. Erin! Your items sound so wonderful!! Can you tell me more about your black tank dress and your black high-waisted shorts? And your slouchy gray linen tee. :)

      1. You got it, girl. My slouchy linen tee is a scoopneck by J.Crew and I have it in 4 colors. I found my first one at the Salvation Army, then promptly bought as many as I could find in my size on Poshmark. I have it in cobalt, moss green, light blue, and a heathered gray, but really if I could wear gray tees all day everyday I totally would do it.

The high waisted shorts are the strangest and best Salvation Army find – they’re in a horrible cheapy suiting material, and when I bought them they were much too big in the waist so they were low and baggy and terribly unflattering on me. (I think they may have been part of a really low-quality boy’s school uniform?) After my husband pointed this out (bless him), I took them to the tailor and got them taken in so that they sit at my natural waist and are slim through my hips. As horrible as the fabric is the fit is so comfortable and flattering that I’ve decided to try my hand at making a pattern and sewing a replica in some different fabrics. I’ll let you know how it goes!

And finally, the black tank dress is from MarcellaModa on Etsy — it’s soft and stretchy and I wear a medium.

        1. You are quite the queen of thrift, well done!! Oh man, if I could wear gray tees all day I would too! It’s the one thing I always seem to want more of, even though I have a nice collection already.

Leave it to our husbands to offer that insightful advice. ;) Good call on the tailor. Talk about extending the life!

Woohoo on the sewing! You need to check out my friend’s sewing blog, it’s really inspiring! So much so that I got my machine out of storage because I really want to attempt a top this summer! Keep me posted!

          1. I spent the evening perusing Baste + Gather — thank you for sharing! This is going to be an invaluable resource for me as I try to remember how to sew…will keep ya posted!

          2. Yay, I am so glad! I actually just got together with Lauren last night! We had a wonderful time. She is smart and funny and all around pretty fabulous. :) I love all the things she sews!!

  5. Hi there first time commenter but I’ve been reading for a while :) I love this idea and am doing it too! You are really making me want to start a style blog though I do not have nearly enough time for it! Your blog is lovely.

    1. Hi Tawny! Yay for de-lurking! ;) I am so pumped that I could encourage you. I started a style blog because I was inspired by others, and yes I don’t have enough time either, haha! Keep us posted if you decide to take the plunge. Glad to have you here!

  6. I am doing something similar right now. 6 base items: 3 tops, 3 bottoms. And trying to style those in different ways for a month. I am not including layering pieces or shoes like you are. But if I did it would be very close to the 10×10. You can follow me on Instagram. I am Kryptos_Silverwolf.

    1. That sounds like a fun challenge! I love experimenting like that because it helps push my creativity and I always end up finding new combos I like.
