the Weekly Rundown: A Radical Change + Snapchat

Seasons and salt blog

There seems to be infinite amounts of heaviness in our country this week. It almost makes anything I write or share here seem trite. But I think it’s important to acknowledge how we feel, and think and pray about what we can do differently. And then I also think it’s okay to have a different conversation. But before that, some words that hit home for me, from Trevor Noah of the Daily Show: “If you’re pro-Black Lives Matter, you’re assumed to be anti-police, and if you’re pro-police, then you surely hate black people. It seems that it’s either pro-cop and anti-black or pro-black and anti-cop when in reality you can be pro-cop and pro-black, which is what we should all be.”

I’m in the final stretch of listening to the audio book version of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, a memoir written by a young neurosurgeon who learns of his own diagnosis with terminal cancer. I first became of aware of the book by following Cup of Jo – it’s written by her brother in law – and later was convinced I had to read it after listening to an interview with Kalanithi’s wife. It’s beautifully written as he eloquently explores his own mortality while simultaneously sharing about the challenging, elite and delicate world of neurosurgery. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to do, think and love more. >> Check it out

My girl Karin of Truncation is doing something radical, something that will surely impact her life and her family deeply. And I LOVE it! Could you do it? >> Go see

Last week, I shared all about my pledged love of Instagram. However, some of my social media affinity is spreading to Snapchat too. After being a long-time hold out, I finally joined a month or so ago, and I’m hooked. But I’m not the only one. Some of Instagram’s most popular food accounts are fleeing to Snapchat too.  >> Find out why

And finally, five styling tips for fine hair! Yes, sign me up to all of this! My baby fine mane can always use a little more pep. >> Check it out

    1. Of course friend! I am excited to support you. Hmmm.. mostly just people I know, and some fun gals like Marloes, Jaana, Sara from IMBY…. :)

  1. Trevor Noah hit the nail on the head. That is exactly how I feel!! I’ve seriously thought about deleting facebook after the recent shootings…I get so angry at people I love spouting hate. But I never know how to be a voice of reason without sounding like I am pro one or the other….which I am not…I am pro both!
That book is on my list for reading this summer, but I am dragging my feet as I don’t like sad books and a wife losing her husband hits a bit too close to home for me.
I am so excited to read Karin’s posts!! Great links this week, Andrea!

    1. It is so hard! FB definitely can perpetuate the worst in us. I’ve come to realize it is just not the place I want to engage in serious conversations on. Much better in person!

The book really isn’t a sad book. Though I am sure the end will be. I’m 3/4 of the way through and I find it really encouraging and inspiring. I think that’s just the kind of person he was. But I’m thinking about you and journey friend. I can imagine it hits close to home!

  2. I recently went on a road trip and we listened to the whole audio book for When Breath Becomes Air. The end made me sob (it’s a good thing I wasn’t driving). I’m thinking of buying a paper copy so I can reread it. I can get a bit distracted when listening to audio books, but Paul’s story seems like one I might want to come back to time and again.
